Reading the news is vital to making you a well rounded individual. Whether its reading the paper, website or even following twitter feeds, it is important to be up to date with whats occurring in the world around you. I have noticed that profs at Seneca stress the importance of keeping up to date with the news, and they are 110 percent right. I have been to several job interviews in the past where my knowledge of current industry trends have helped me impress the interviewer.
Since I am a student now and just been in Canada for one year, reading newspaper on a regular basis can help me know about this city and country, and connect me with the real business world out of the school. Also these business news provide great examples which I can use in my tests, putting what I have learned in class into the practise.
I think that reading the news will benefit yourself because it keeps you updated with what is going on around the world and also it lets you know whats going with the business world and could be also about the industry your working.
Recently I have spent a number of months in sales, and honestly is the first time its clicked. Richardson might be on to something!!
I began read the paper on my daily TTC commute. It allowed me to keep on top industries and pitch to the clients based on what was most relevant to them.
Being in the know now gives me the braging rights, the first person in my office to have EVER closed an account in their first month (usually takes min of 3 months to develop a relationship).
Reading the newspaper should be as important to you as brushing your teeth every morning. It's important in the big bad job market out there to be on top of your game, and knowing what's going on, is key. It has helped me participate well in lunch and learns at work, elevator talks and general networking. It's a simple way to impress people and get noticed - something that is vital for young graduates!
news.google.com allows you to customize the news that you get if you have a google (i.e. gmail account). This allows me to consume the news online in a similar way that I consume the news when it's in a paper form (i.e. separate the Business, Sports, and Main section and throw out the rest lol).
Hopefully this will help some make the news experience more personal and more interesting, rather than wading through what Lady Gaga wore last night to get to the important stuff.
It is important to stay on top of the news everytime. I work in a real estate firm as a Digital marketing specialist. When Google Plus was launched this year, many realtors had no clue of what was going on. I found an article on mashable.com talking about the Google Plus launch and got someone to invite me. I had first mover advantage with this social network and started getting people to join our page. Now my company's page on Google Plus is highly ranked for real estate. Thanks to the news.
Personally I used to be an avid reader of the news. Now everything's online so I source from there. Once in awhile I'll pick up thestar at UTSC. However, I've come to realize that quality in general newspapers is lacking substance especially G&M and TheStar. I resort to now specialty blogs/newspaper to read up on news like tech (Techcrunch, Mashable), sports (ESPN, TSN), business (CNBC, WSJ) and Twitter =). Better, more informative, in-depth coverage. Plus it's more interesting.
quality in general newspapers is lacking substance - agreed, that is why i recommend students also read a good quality business magazine (like your reading of the Economist)
I have always been interested in keeping up with worldwide current events. By participating in class, and outside of class, my knowledge acquired from the daily news has been useful. I now find myself relating different aspects of the news to different class discussions, theories and concepts. I know that I will take these skills with me into the future which will inevitably help we on my career path.
I thought this video was very helpful. You brought up some points that I didn't think about. The video just emphasized the point you made in class today, concerning that keeping up to date with whats going on around the world, you can possibly land a job or add further value to your job position. To be honest, I don't read the newspaper, but I can truly say that this has definitely motivated me to start reading newspapers. Thanks!
Short and sweet speech. I am applying my insights from the papers on my investment decisions and to explore job opportunities. One thing I would like to point out is that when reading a piece of news from a company, it is important to pay attention to the tone of a quote from the executives and spokespersons. Sometimes, it is more about understanding how they present/ try to convince an idea and digesting the implications than simply reading the words per se.
Reading the newspaper allows you to have a glimpse of what is going on in this busy world of ours. The world moves very quickly and staying informed of daily topics gives you leverage for conservation and also broadened understanding of the world.
"gives you leverage for conservation" - yes, you will SOUND like a college/univ grad when you open your mouth - that is the difference between and "educated" person and someone who does not care about the world around them
When I was in high school, I hated reading newspapers and never read it unless it was for an assignment. After I started College, I began reading the Toronto Star every morning and increased my verbal and writing skills. I gained experience in presenting and also when writing my essays.
The the most important thing I have learned from C44 is reading the newspaper. As a business student, I find it benefical to read the business section of the newspaper as I can talk about different stories pertaining to various classes that I am taking. Reading the daily newspaper is very important, because the newspaper provides up to date current events both in your own country and around the world. Also, by reading, I was exposed to new words which improved my vocabulary.
From personal experience, I can attest to the fact that reading the newspaper helps in various aspects of life. Last semester I was interviewing for a co-op position and the very first question that the interviewer asked was "what happened in the news today?" I'm glad I had read the newspaper that day and was able to hold an intelligent conversation with the interviewer. Staying up to date with the news as well as industry knowledge is vital to success.
I was a "paperboy" (girl) from age 10-15, but didn't start reading the newspaper until recently! I always thought watching the news on TV was good enough, but it turns out, reading the news paper is faster and much more informative. I work at a bar and have been finding I am better able to have informed conversations with people of ALL interests and walks of life (beyond mere "small-talk") simply by keeping up with the paper! Who knew!
Half-way into this course, I have found that reading the newspaper has translated into a better knowledge on stock opportunities - which I have applied to my Investments course.
This is true and take advantage of the free newspaper in the eatery during your time of study at Seneca. Its free and informative.

Very true - If you don't have time to read the news, at least have a general idea of what's going on.
