Italy had one of the best defence packs ever seen in a WC, a decent midfield with two great players who were Tardelli and Conti and any of the attackers of Italy, be it Rossi, Bettega or Altobelli showed better than Serginh. I have seen the whole WC, and whatever their quality in their other lives, Peres, Serginho Luisinho and Oscar did not live up single match of that WC.
I guess if Careca were not injuried, it could have been a different story...

I'm not sure that getting a through ball past Gentile a couple of times in the match and looking stylish once or twice really counts as 'owning' as such, especially when you are Zico, and your team lost. In any case, Gentile is hardly forgotten, given that he is still remembered quite prominently for being an integral part of a team that won the World Cup.

One defender can be enough, if he knows HOW to defend: just look at Baresi against Brasil. Defenders nowadays lack defensive basic skills. I mean marking, anticipation, tackling and so on... I just see what boosra has described. More physical: maybe... then I would just look at athletics.
The reason the referee did not give a penalty for Brazil when Gentile ripped Zico's shirt was because he was judged to be offside. However, pause the video at 2.32 and he is clearly onside. In my opinion, Gentile is standing deeper than him (although it is very close to level), but the player marking Serginho is definitely playing him onside.

1. Backpasses to the keeper
2. Referees too lenient on persistent fouling.
In every other respect its far superior to todays junk.
