I love to see JRT's fetch! Our little guy, "Tucker", wasn't up for fetching until we made the game more fun for him. He will fetch if we count down "3..2..1..GO!" and throw the toy. He'll bring it back and will tug-of-war until we tell him to "let go". I can't seem to get him to bark, though. He only ever barks at one thing, a little mechanical helicopter. He has a really deep, manly, bark for a such a little guy (even by JRT standards, he's small). I think he scares himself :D

there was a v. good sci. prog on brit t.v. recently about human/dog evolution, Horizon, and i learned that dogs have a much larger human language AND sign vocab than chimps, our nearest relative. In fact chimps don't understand what pointing at summat means, but dogs understand it from puppy age. Clearly something that's become innate to them as it is to us!!! Dogs truly are man's best friend. Dontcha just love em!!

*I agree with comment about JRTs snorting a lot. Liam snorts at me whenever he gets a command he doesn't agree with, Or if I pat him when he doesn't want to. Of course, if i don't pat him again the snort! ;-)

One way to get them to give you the ball is to have ANOTHER ball in hand. My Jack won't come back with the ball unless I have another one in my hand. Then he comes back, drops the ball he has at my feet, and wants me to throw the other ball. And the cycle continues.

why is everyone so surprised the dog wont give up the toy.. lots of dogs are like that.. they play keep away and tug of war. you can teach them to give you on command. my 6month old terrier wont giver it up either unless i say. (in a stern by calm tone) "Puppy ...drop it" then she obeys immediately.

use 2 alike balls. Your dog will drop the one in the mouth when it realizes the game starts again as soon as it drops the one in the mouth. Command "drop it" too (or something you choose), so you can use one ball again after training is over. bounce the ball you have in your hand if the dog doesn't not drop. dog should get more excited about the ball in your hand than the one in its mouth. If you like not getting the ball back, skip everything I just said and enjoy your dog.

My Russell lasted 9 years. She was like having an obedient 4 year old daughter. At 11pm she knew it was her bedtime so she went into her cage. Didn't have to close it. Had to be on her case when she was a pup constantly. After that she was a great dog.

Jack Russells' are great...I got mine (Dodger) many years ago! He is now 14 years old and almost blind!....he can still fetch his ball when you throw it for him though and manages to avoid anything that may get in his way! I would put him on Youtube...but you can bet your bottom dollar (£) that that would be the day he ran into a tree! Lol

he is a terrier trained to hunt by nature so they need a lot of exercise. They are highly intelligent and bred to run with horses 20 miles a day so you can see the ball is important as is stick at the beach and long trail runs with gopher squirrels etc!

I found my dog's twin! My terrier is all white, with a brown ear and the other is a brown polka dot ear just like yours! The only difference is the coat. My dog has a fluffy coat not the traditional JRT coat. I adopted her from a shelter and all I know is that she's JRT mixed. Gorgeous dog!

JRT's are great dogs. We have one and she is great with our 4 young children. She is very easy to train but you have to keep them challenged or they will challenge your patience lol. Ours is only 6 months old and is already more trained than any other Dog I have owned..Mostly mutts.
