After you install SP4, install the Security rollup, disable messenger in the services, change your optical drive from PIO to DMA mode, and install an unzip utility, you'll have one efficient and very capable OS (right now I'm running 25 processes and using about 160mb ram, TAKE THAT WINDOWS 7!!!). There's still tons of modern software that will run on this OS. Windows 2000 has the best user-interface and snappiest navigation response times of any Microsft OS ever made.

Win 2k is nowhere near dead. I use three main computers for all my needs, Windows 7, XP and 2000. 7 is used for everything elite and powerful as it is the most up to date Windows OS. Windows XP is used for downloading, processing and hosting my external hard disks. Then 2000 is used for gaming as it can play all the classic games I want it to like Age of Empires and SimCity. Sure, I could include the gaming aspect into XP but I prefer monitoring my work while playing games.

I tried Win2k on my NX6325 about 2 years ago. It couldn't see both cores, made the laptop really hot, and reduced battery life to 15 minutes. The laptop wasn't much faster (as I had hoped).

Your mention of IE and Windows Media Player and the Live services reminded me of how dependent on Microsoft and the latest hardware people are who don't know that third-party tools give sSimilar functionality as non-Microsoft programs, even under Win2k (browser, chat, media player, utilities, etc).

The few things that don't work are things that I and a lot of people i know don't use on the latest modern windows systems or could care less or would even realize that they were not running the latest version of media player for example, and I for one hate windows live and don't know anyone who uses it. And outlook express works fine, its email not rocket science. I've long since moved to a Mac. I would only be concerned with the security of using such an old system to surf the web.

Windows 2000 has probably 80% of the capabilities XP has. Most of what it doesn't have is cosmetic, like Luna and cleartype fonts. I wouldn't consider IE support a major factor, since IE blows anyway. :)

microsoft has a notoriously hard time letting go of operating systems. look at all the features that were supposed to be "Vista exclusive" that were backported to XP; IE7, WMP11, Windows Search, Windows Defender, etc. Windows 2000 is certainly no expeption, 4 service packs and 3rd party software kept it alive. Extended support didnt end until last year, over a decade after it was released.

I find this video very interesting. It shows that you can run older versions of Windows and still connect to the Internet by wireless broadband. In England you can no longer buy Windows XP or Windows Vista computers or laptops now. Only Windows 7. But I know of a London office that is still using Windows 95 with IE6. Do not use Windows 2000, it's not good, it runs slow, can't use most modern things on it, Microsoft doesn't do support for it anymore, AVG doesn't work for it and it's only good if you have NO money and found it in the basement as like I.

I am only using it now because modern day laptops cost a lot of money and money I do not have at the moment.

It's safe to use and all but I would rather have a Windows 7, Windows XP or Windows Vista computer.

If you could get 2000 to run on a brand new (vista) PC, (drivers would be an issue,) but can you imagine how fast it would be? And how much RAM would be available for apps, not being hogged by the OS? Wow!!! I once put 98se on a Win2k laptop for the boss's boss, and it was amazing how fast it was. wish that software publishers and writers would stop using the mentality that faster hardware is a license to bloat the software. But It's successor, Windows XP, is just an update to Windows 2000 (NT 5.1) so it's really based on Windows 2000.

These 2 OSes are great for very old computers, I say :P
