The reason why Gays need a PARADE is because they have become Gay.. they were not born gay.. just like ppl become lawyers, doctors, athletes, strong, wise, etc etc... this is why they Parade.. they were not gay when they were born... it's an act of becoming.. not being...no one is proud of who they are.. they are proud of what they have accomplished.. so are gays of accomplishing the act of homosexuality... they have transitioned from being born heterosexual to becoming gay..

Part 2 When she found out I was female, she did the "cringe" thing. Now, I wish you would address this comment, because the "cringe" thing is not genetic like you claim it is. It is a conditioned response. People are not genetically gay or straight. They choose the type of human they want to fuck based upon indoctrination or self choice. That is what's called conditional love. Now, xx13moons, how can you refute this?
Wrong, people are genetically gay or straight. Surely this is not the case for every homosexual, but a specific gene has been identified, isolated and is considered responsible for causing homosexual behavior. This gene exists in some of the animal population as well. It causes a variance in hormonal levels, i.e. changes neuro-typical brain chemistry. How can I "refute" what? You've refuted yourself by providing no evidence whatsoever for your claims. And I hope the "cringe" wasn't it.. lol
You just don't want to listen. You listen to books or "evidence" but you won't listen to the everyday truths that take place in life, in the heart. Your book smart, that's all. Do you actually care about what someone has to tell you from the heart, or do you say, prove it! Not all intelligence comes from books, it comes from insight, and the "cringe" which you like to laugh away is an insight that I had into life, not bullshit like you say or think it is.
lol.. yea... I listen to "evidence," HOW DARE I!! aha.. .you've got to be kidding me. I'm stopping this conversation on here as I am soon uploading a video in response. Wow. And yes, I ask people to "prove" outlandish claims that they make - why? Because if simply believed every last claim that people made, I'd be believing in gods, aliens, ghosts and all other kinds of wacky stuff.
well, I've been wanting to make a video on genetic determinism for quite some time now. This conversation we've been having has given me format onto which I can base my video. I already made it, but haven't uploaded it. Regardless of our disagreement, thanks for the discussion.
Had a brainstorm. About 3 years ago I shaved my head. No big deal, I'm a woman and I wanted to cool off in the summer. I lived in L.A. at the time, and went to a gay bar where people who identified as being gay or lesbian went. When I walked into the bar, a few of the guys were checking me out, were really "interested" in me. When I spoke, they did this "cringe" thing. The same thing happened when I was talking to a girl who identified as straight. She liked me because she thought I was a man..
Well, in this sense, science does suck. Science made us slaves to cars, electricity, and plumbing, and then soon came the stupid suburbia and the dreaded grind of city life. I would have rather liked to have been raised living off the land like the native americans once did, having a very simple life, but ambitious scientists helped plunder the land, creating a zombie like culture. Yeah, it's held in place and more static than healthy.
Again, B.S.! That's not the fault of "science." Science is merely a method. That's people! People using science to meet THEIR ends. Science is neither good nor bad, the splitting of the atom was neither good nor bad, you see? It's what people do with the technology. PEOPLE are good or bad, not science. Please don't confuse the two. It's what humans have done with science that makes it "evil" or "good." Science is neutral, like anything else. Guns don't kill people; people with guns do, ya know?
To say science is completely innocent is just incorrect. When they split the atom, don't you think they knew nuclear bombs were next? Science is not neutral. Any intelligent person knows that if you create a weapon like a gun, a human being is going to get killed. The invention of weapons fosters an air of violence, because it stems from a violent mind. Don't be so naive. In life, some doors shouldn't be opened. What scares me about science is the prideful ambition in most of it's methods.
I don't understand why you have a problem with the "preference is taught" statement. Just look around your world, get your head out of books, and see for yourself how people's lifestyles are based upon tradition, the past, conditioning, what they're taught in school, by their parents. This is all too clear. Don't twist this around with "angels and gravity". That has no relationship to what I'm saying.
The issue here is that this conversation is pointless. A.) You obviously don't understand what science really is; and this ignorance allows you to make false assumptions which always lead to false conclusions. B.) You've already admitted several times that you don't care about the "evidence," evidence doesn't matter to you, because science, according to you, is just another flawed and biased way of looking at the world. I'm sorry you see it that way; because that is not what it is. Peace
oh.. and btw, "science" didn't make us "slaves to cars, electricity, plumbing, etc.." you made yourelf a slave to those things. You're quite free to go live a more simple life somewhere else. I'm gonna have to make a video about this, because your comments are really beginning to piss me off a bit - the fact that you are such an ingrate in a world that is full of SO MANY people who are dying, every minute, and who would KILL to have the resources and technology you have. Ingrate.
No, I'm not free to go somewhere else and live a more simple life, because I have been conditioned by the modern way of living, not to mention that modern life has destroyed most indigenous cultures and their simple ways of living. And don't you think that this appetite for resources and technology(civilization) is the biggest reason why people elsewhere go without the basic necessities.
Sir, there's no need to get upset. This is dialogue, learning. Let's not let anger get in our way.
I can tell that you obviously have an issue with determinism, that's fine. Many people do. But you can't base your claims and beliefs on how you "feel" about things, you know? Either the evidence is there, or it isn't. It seems like you make some sort of divide between human beings and the rest of the animal and plant kingdom, why? Their behaviors are primarily determined by genetic variance, right? Why on Earth would you think WE (primates) are any better?
Again, I mentioned earlier about that word "evidence" and my skepticism towards it. I trust insight above all, not some ambitious guy in a lab making mucho cashola from some government project with hidden agendas. I don't understand why you can't see this likely bias scenario in scientific research, especially the research that tries to explain human interaction. Hitler did this kind of "research".
Humans and other animals are similar yet different, and I never mentioned the word "better".
Clearly you have never been faced with bigotry based on something you are. The idea of gay pride and movements like it was to fight the idea pushed for centuries that being gay was something wrong, something to be ashamed of.
Your white, heterosexual male pride parade was the last several centuries in which white, heterosexual males dominated and controlled the planet while beating down those who didn't fit that description.
My asexuality is not a trivial thing, I am proud of it.
As a white heterosexual male, you're part of the majority and frankly, in that group never have had to overcome some adversary, as say black people have - homosexuals have etc. Being part of the white heterosexual group is being part of the privileged majority, right?
Privileged,... well, the only main difference I see is the marriage laws (and that is not my decision - were it up to me, there would be no such ban on gay marriage.) How am I privileged? Do people really think that if you're a heterosexual, while male, you receive a $100 check in the mail every week, just for being yourself or something? Come on now. And let's be honest here, given affirmative action, it'd be hard for you to back up that statement; saying whites are "privileged."
"privilege," if it means anything in this context, simply means majority. A white student at an all black high-school will be the opposite of privileged, right? In that scenario, it is the black students who are "privileged" compared to the poor lot of the lonely white boy.
Part 2 To use an example, in a book I read, there was this woman who married a man, and after years of being married, the husband got a sex change and became a woman. This did not matter to the wife. She loved her mate unconditionally, and they remained a happy couple. Now, if sexual orientation was genetic, wouldn't the wife leave her husband? The fact that she didn't have an identifying divide in her mind, allowed her to see the beauty inside the person she loved.
Your parade happens everyday. Being a heterosexual, white male is the norm... the standard so to speak. Now, I do agree... being proud of being gay, simply makes no sense... I am not proud of being gay, white, male, American, etc etc.
If I can, I'll have to make a video response... likely will take forever since I can hardly sit down and watch videos lately, let a lone make one.
All people need to go beyond the facade of things, put pride away with the understanding of it. I don't like using the genetics theory for every human behavior. Most human behavior, including all sexual orientations is due to environment or conditioning, so maybe that's why there are pride parades. The parade comes with the pride that comes from the choosing. There's an identification that takes place which stems from psychological division. Why is human love labeled as sexual orientation?
Well, I don't use "genetics theory" for every single human behavior; but it is a HUGE defining factor. Like I've said before, genetics is our "hard-wiring," culture, family, environment is our "soft-wiring." We're born a simple way, with certain particular features; those features are both physical (blue eyes, brown hair, short/tall, etc..) and psychological (predisposition to depression, temperament, additions, etc..) This is one of those areas that I wish more people knew more about..
..simply because genetics do play such a substantial role in determining who we are as "individuals." And it's an area of science that is growing in its knowledge exponentially, every year. Recently, they just discovered a genetic variance that causes some men to have more difficulty with monogamy. Genetic variance is responsible for people with anger problems, schizophrenia, kindness, whatever. You can't minimize the role of Genes; we are our bodies, are we not? Above all else, physical beings.
Yeah, but if you say this, then you can also say the reason people murder is because of genes. It's an easy way of copping out. No one then has to take responsibility for their behavior. They can just say that genetics did the crime. Alcoholics say they're born as alcoholics, and that's silly. It's called addiction. There's this blind attraction to science that goes all too unchecked, and it seems that if you're not blinded by religion, you're then blinded by so called scientific "evidence".
You see, I don't believe in what the scientists say, because how do I know they're telling me the truth. Just like I don't believe in what religion tells me. I don't subscribe to taking any so called "expert's" word for it. The media tells lies, so why should I trust a science bible. After all, many scientists have hidden agendas and they may also be manipulated by government and big business interests. Money talks, bullshit walks. If you're as skeptical as you say then question science as well.
See.. now you comparison of science to religion would be a valid one if.... IF.. that made sense; but you see, it does not. What has religion promised us? Everything. What has it given us? Absolutely nothing. So what of science? What has IT given us? Well take a look around, no matter where you are - everything you see around you is held into place only because of science. Whether the electricity that powers your home, the car you drive, the water that comes out of your faucet,
..the computer you're using right now, the car you drive, the vaccines that keep your children alive and safe; EVERYTHING was given to us by Science. You know why? Because science is nothing like religion - science doesn't make empty promises based on the assumptions and empty wisdom of ignorant men; no, science, unlike ANYTHING ELSE known to the human race (religion, philosophy) is able to do the ONE great thing that none of those other things can: PROVIDE RESULTS. You seem them all around you.
So, I appreciate your insight, but that's a rather faulty comparison if I've ever seen one. Science works because it is fueled by objectivity. That is the very reason why it works, because it's NOT "just someone's opinion." It's not just subjectivity. It's peer-reviewed process, falsifiability, etc.., the only successful process that we've known thus far that is REALLY able to separate fact from fiction. Science works - that's how you can know to trust it.
One more thing, you say "I don't believe in what the scientists say..." B.S., yes you do! The fact that you are using a computer and electricity RIGHT this moments is a testament to that very belief! How can you ignore that? It is science that has provided you with EVERYTHING you have; every single thing that makes your life tolerable, bearable, comfortable, is a product of ONE thing: SCIENCE. So please, stop. That's such utter nonsense and you know it.
So please, don't forget that - every time you flip on a light switch, get on your computer, go to a doctor to get cured or get in your car to drive, you're "believing the scientists." We'd be primitives without science - that's the ONE thing separating us from early man, our technology, our medicine, our science. Be grateful, be very grateful.
Yes, and with all of our sacred science, we're still killing each other, war after war after stinking war. So far, science has not solved the problems of human conflict which is caused by psychological division. If we can flip a light switch even when almost everyone's dead in the next world war, then yippee!! We must be proud of ourselves.
I meant science in the context of what you were speaking about in your video. When someone tells me that a man's inability to be monogamous is genetic, I raise an eyebrow.
Agreed, science can't be compared to the inanity of religion, but I've seen many people abandon religion only to crown science as their new god. Science is great in practical measures such as creating computers and making a robotic leg, but when scientists start saying that sexual orientation is genetic, that's nonsense. That's like saying it's genetic to prefer blondes. Preference is a thing you're taught.
See,.. that sounds all wonderful - but science has proven its claims, whereas you have not. And that's how we can know how to separate truth from nonsense. Do you have an actual evidence to back up your claim that "preference is taught?" See, because there is a ton of evidence proving the contrary; that sexual preference has mostly to do with genetics. It's not about what you think, or what you like - it's about the data, evidence, etc.. now isn't it?
You saying "preference is taught," is no more helpful than if you were to say that, "Gravity is really caused by invisible angels pulling things towards the ground." It may sound neat, but you don't have a shred of evidence to back up your claim, so what good is it? I'm sorry that you're not familiar with the evidence for Genetics; but your ignorance on this issue doesn't mean that the evidence doesn't exist, it does. I'm all ears if you have an alternate theory.
That word "proven" is brandished like a weapon. It only shows how over eager people are to following science like it's a religion. Remember, science comes from intellect, not intelligence. There's a difference there. And just because some "expert" tells me about "evidence", what does he really know? After all, all of scientist's instruments have been invented by him. Yeah, 13moons, it's about what he thinks, he likes, his data, his evidence. I smell a rat.
When you make statements like this, I don't know whether to chuckle or punch the wall. I don't understand how you can reduce science to "just another worldview," comparable to religion or something. It's just so.... idiotic, to put it NICELY. This is the all-American war on expertise. Why trust the experts? Than don't! Why go to a doctor when you're sick? What kind of absurd question IS that after-all? It's not a matter of trust, what matters is not what scientists say -
and that's what I'm trying to make clear here. It's not about what anyone "says." Science is more than empty and biased truth claims, it is a process. Do you know how falsifiability works? That's a serious question. It's not like one guy in a lab comes up with a neat idea, and then that turns into a theory, no. Please study the process of empiricism, and see how theories are made. The entire point of peer-review and falsifiability is to prove a scientific claim WRONG. You do know that, right?
Forgive my tangent. I just get really annoyed when people repeat nonsensical cliches, and comparing science to religion is one of them. A common claim made by ignorant theists in an effort to bring science down to the level of faith. Sorry, not gonna happen. I'm not saying you're trying to do that, but I've seen it a lot; and it's a terrible, silly mistake.
Well done video. In many ways all the focus on people's sexuality and our culture's overall obsession with sex is dividing our country more than anything.
I can see how this comment could be misconstrued. Pride parades and similar activities are ways to create environments to counter the oppression of the dominant group. They tend to not be understood, or misunderstood because we forget our own privileges and thus the affects lack of them have on our psyche. They aren't the best way or worst way, just the only way some people have come up with at this point to counter the negativity surrounding what they are being oppressed for. -cont
These are often attached to historical events, and additionally serve to include celebrations geared toward marginalized groups. As another poster said, I think the "pride" part is often where people get confused. In its use in these cases, its met I am proud of certain characteristics which dominant culture claims I should be ashamed of.
Oh, and I wanted to point out one more thing, there are a tone of white pride, heterosexual pride, etc. things, but, to borrow something from Tim Wise, when your stuff, is the stuff by which all other things are measured with you don't have to say "white", or straight" or "able bodied", or anything else because those things are simply viewed as the norm, and thus become invisible.
Good points, especially at the end when you said that these pride movements end up highlighting our differences over our similarities. Maybe it's just a poor choice of words. I have a great deal of respect for my heritage but that isn't exactly the same thing as pride, although that's how people usually phrase it. There can also a fine line between "pride" and a claim of supremacy, which leads to a double standard. "Gay pride" and "white pride" end up having very different connotations.
I think that a person can claim pride, because they have overcome bigotry and tradition.
This determination of self is something that perhaps we can take pride in.
Would you agree?

Yeah, it's held in place and more static than healthy.
wonderwhaz797 2 years ago
Again, B.S.! That's not the fault of "science." Science is merely a method. That's people! People using science to meet THEIR ends. Science is neither good nor bad, the splitting of the atom was neither good nor bad, you see? It's what people do with the technology. PEOPLE are good or bad, not science. Please don't confuse the two. It's what humans have done with science that makes it "evil" or "good." Science is neutral, like anything else. Guns don't kill people; people with guns do, ya know?
xx13moons 2 years ago
To say science is completely innocent is just incorrect. When they split the atom, don't you think they knew nuclear bombs were next? Science is not neutral. Any intelligent person knows that if you create a weapon like a gun, a human being is going to get killed. The invention of weapons fosters an air of violence, because it stems from a violent mind. Don't be so naive. In life, some doors shouldn't be opened. What scares me about science is the prideful ambition in most of it's methods.
wonderwhaz797 2 years ago
I don't understand why you have a problem with the "preference is taught" statement. Just look around your world, get your head out of books, and see for yourself how people's lifestyles are based upon tradition, the past, conditioning, what they're taught in school, by their parents. This is all too clear. Don't twist this around with "angels and gravity". That has no relationship to what I'm saying.
wonderwhaz797 2 years ago
The issue here is that this conversation is pointless. A.) You obviously don't understand what science really is; and this ignorance allows you to make false assumptions which always lead to false conclusions. B.) You've already admitted several times that you don't care about the "evidence," evidence doesn't matter to you, because science, according to you, is just another flawed and biased way of looking at the world. I'm sorry you see it that way; because that is not what it is. Peace
xx13moons 2 years ago
oh.. and btw, "science" didn't make us "slaves to cars, electricity, plumbing, etc.." you made yourelf a slave to those things. Ingrate.
xx13moons 2 years ago
No, I'm not free to go somewhere else and live a more simple life, because I have been conditioned by the modern way of living, not to mention that modern life has destroyed most indigenous cultures and their simple ways of living. And don't you think that this appetite for resources and technology(civilization) is the biggest reason why people elsewhere go without the basic necessities.
Sir, there's no need to get upset. This is dialogue, learning. Let's not let anger get in our way.
wonderwhaz797 2 years ago
I can tell that you obviously have an issue with determinism, that's fine. Many people do. But you can't base your claims and beliefs on how you "feel" about things, you know? Either the evidence is there, or it isn't. It seems like you make some sort of divide between human beings and the rest of the animal and plant kingdom, why? Their behaviors are primarily determined by genetic variance, right? Why on Earth would you think WE (primates) are any better?
xx13moons 2 years ago
Again, I mentioned earlier about that word "evidence" and my skepticism towards it. I trust insight above all, not some ambitious guy in a lab making mucho cashola from some government project with hidden agendas. I don't understand why you can't see this likely bias scenario in scientific research, especially the research that tries to explain human interaction. Hitler did this kind of "research".
Humans and other animals are similar yet different, and I never mentioned the word "better".
wonderwhaz797 2 years ago
@wonderwhaz797
"some ambitious guy in a lab making mucho cashola"
You don't actually know what science is, do you? You've gleaned most of your understanding from tv and internet rumors, haven't you?
I suggest you start with 'empiricism' then look up 'scientific method' then 'peer review' then 'science funding'.
"Hitler did this kind of "research"."
No, he didn't. Hitler was a dictator, not a researcher. And neither did he command anything remotely similar to be researched.

My asexuality is not a trivial thing, I am proud of it.
amhemsley 2 years ago 4
@amhemsley
Well, I missed that parade. I want another.
hjjfffaa 1 year ago
As a white heterosexual male, you're part of the majority and frankly, in that group never have had to overcome some adversary, as say black people have - homosexuals have etc. Being part of the white heterosexual group is being part of the privileged majority, right?
antiquelens 2 years ago 3
Privileged,... well, the only main difference I see is the marriage laws (and that is not my decision - were it up to me, there would be no such ban on gay marriage.) How am I privileged? Do people really think that if you're a heterosexual, while male, you receive a $100 check in the mail every week, just for being yourself or something? Come on now. And let's be honest here, given affirmative action, it'd be hard for you to back up that statement; saying whites are "privileged."
xx13moons 2 years ago
"privilege," if it means anything in this context, simply means majority. A white student at an all black high-school will be the opposite of privileged, right? In that scenario, it is the black students who are "privileged" compared to the poor lot of the lonely white boy.
xx13moons 2 years ago
I mean in society at large. It's stupid and i disagree with it, i think it shouldn't exist.

Parades - from my experience with homosexual friends, pride helps them feel a sense of community - a way to really allow people to come together.
antiquelens 2 years ago
Also, a lot of asexuals are heteroromantic or homoromantic, they have the same emotional needs, relationship needs.
Just to clarify.
Why is this brought about me anyway, haha i am confused. I guess i didn't realize we were talking about movement.
antiquelens 2 years ago
People who take pride are often part of a minority, and it's a way for joy, celebration and recognition. I think it's important for a lot of people.

The fact that she didn't have an identifying divide in her mind, allowed her to see the beauty inside the person she loved.
wonderwhaz797 2 years ago
Your parade happens everyday. Being a heterosexual, white male is the norm... the standard so to speak. Now, I do agree... being proud of being gay, simply makes no sense... I am not proud of being gay, white, male, American, etc etc.
If I can, I'll have to make a video response... likely will take forever since I can hardly sit down and watch videos lately, let a lone make one.
tattooskin72 2 years ago
All people need to go beyond the facade of things, put pride away with the understanding of it. I don't like using the genetics theory for every human behavior. Most human behavior, including all sexual orientations is due to environment or conditioning, so maybe that's why there are pride parades. The parade comes with the pride that comes from the choosing. There's an identification that takes place which stems from psychological division. Why is human love labeled as sexual orientation?
wonderwhaz797 2 years ago
Well, I don't use "genetics theory" for every single human behavior; but it is a HUGE defining factor. Like I've said before, genetics is our "hard-wiring," culture, family, environment is our "soft-wiring." We're born a simple way, with certain particular features; those features are both physical (blue eyes, brown hair, short/tall, etc..) and psychological (predisposition to depression, temperament, additions, etc..) This is one of those areas that I wish more people knew more about..
xx13moons 2 years ago
I meant to say, "we're born a *certain way," not born a "simple" way, lol
xx13moons 2 years ago
..simply because genetics do play such a substantial role in determining who we are as "individuals." And it's an area of science that is growing in its knowledge exponentially, every year. Recently, they just discovered a genetic variance that causes some men to have more difficulty with monogamy. Genetic variance is responsible for people with anger problems, schizophrenia, kindness, whatever. You can't minimize the role of Genes; we are our bodies, are we not? Above all else, physical beings.
xx13moons 2 years ago
Yeah, but if you say this, then you can also say the reason people murder is because of genes. It's an easy way of copping out. No one then has to take responsibility for their behavior. They can just say that genetics did the crime. Alcoholics say they're born as alcoholics, and that's silly. It's called addiction. There's this blind attraction to science that goes all too unchecked, and it seems that if you're not blinded by religion, you're then blinded by so called scientific "evidence".
wonderwhaz797 2 years ago
You see, I don't believe in what the scientists say, because how do I know they're telling me the truth. Just like I don't believe in what religion tells me. I don't subscribe to taking any so called "expert's" word for it. The media tells lies, so why should I trust a science bible. After all, many scientists have hidden agendas and they may also be manipulated by government and big business interests. Money talks, bullshit walks. If you're as skeptical as you say then question science as well.
wonderwhaz797 2 years ago
See.. now you comparison of science to religion would be a valid one if.... IF.. that made sense; but you see, it does not. What has religion promised us? Everything. What has it given us? Absolutely nothing. So what of science? What has IT given us? Well take a look around, no matter where you are - everything you see around you is held into place only because of science. Whether the electricity that powers your home, the car you drive, the water that comes out of your faucet,
xx13moons 2 years ago
..the computer you're using right now, the car you drive, the vaccines that keep your children alive and safe; EVERYTHING was given to us by Science. You seem them all around you.
xx13moons 2 years ago
So, I appreciate your insight, but that's a rather faulty comparison if I've ever seen one. Science works because it is fueled by objectivity. That is the very reason why it works, because it's NOT "just someone's opinion." It's not just subjectivity. It's peer-reviewed process, falsifiability, etc.., the only successful process that we've known thus far that is REALLY able to separate fact from fiction. Science works - that's how you can know to trust it.
xx13moons 2 years ago
One more thing, you say "I don't believe in what the scientists say..." B.S., yes you do! The fact that you are using a computer and electricity RIGHT this moments is a testament to that very belief! How can you ignore that? It is science that has provided you with EVERYTHING you have; every single thing that makes your life tolerable, bearable, comfortable, is a product of ONE thing: SCIENCE. So please, stop. That's such utter nonsense and you know it.
xx13moons 2 years ago
So please, don't forget that - every time you flip on a light switch, get on your computer, go to a doctor to get cured or get in your car to drive, you're "believing the scientists." We'd be primitives without science - that's the ONE thing separating us from early man, our technology, our medicine, our science. Be grateful, be very grateful.
xx13moons 2 years ago
Yes, and with all of our sacred science, we're still killing each other, war after war after stinking war. So far, science has not solved the problems of human conflict which is caused by psychological division. If we can flip a light switch even when almost everyone's dead in the next world war, then yippee!! We must be proud of ourselves.
wonderwhaz797 2 years ago
I meant science in the context of what you were speaking about in your video. When someone tells me that a man's inability to be monogamous is genetic, I raise an eyebrow.
wonderwhaz797 2 years ago
Agreed, science can't be compared to the inanity of religion, but I've seen many people abandon religion only to crown science as their new god. Science is great in practical measures such as creating computers and making a robotic leg, but when scientists start saying that sexual orientation is genetic, that's nonsense. That's like saying it's genetic to prefer blondes. Preference is a thing you're taught.
wonderwhaz797 2 years ago
See,.. that sounds all wonderful - but science has proven its claims, whereas you have not. And that's how we can know how to separate truth from nonsense. Do you have an actual evidence to back up your claim that "preference is taught?" See, because there is a ton of evidence proving the contrary; that sexual preference has mostly to do with genetics. It's not about what you think, or what you like - it's about the data, evidence, etc.. now isn't it?
xx13moons 2 years ago
You saying "preference is taught," is no more helpful than if you were to say that, "Gravity is really caused by invisible angels pulling things towards the ground." It may sound neat, but you don't have a shred of evidence to back up your claim, so what good is it? I'm sorry that you're not familiar with the evidence for Genetics; but your ignorance on this issue doesn't mean that the evidence doesn't exist, it does. I'm all ears if you have an alternate theory.
xx13moons 2 years ago
That word "proven" is brandished like a weapon. It only shows how over eager people are to following science like it's a religion. Remember, science comes from intellect, not intelligence. There's a difference there. And just because some "expert" tells me about "evidence", what does he really know? After all, all of scientist's instruments have been invented by him. Yeah, 13moons, it's about what he thinks, he likes, his data, his evidence. I smell a rat.
wonderwhaz797 2 years ago
When you make statements like this, I don't know whether to chuckle or punch the wall. I don't understand how you can reduce science to "just another worldview," comparable to religion or something. It's just so.... idiotic, to put it NICELY. This is the all-American war on expertise. Why trust the experts? Than don't! Why go to a doctor when you're sick? What kind of absurd question IS that after-all? It's not a matter of trust, what matters is not what scientists say -
xx13moons 2 years ago
and that's what I'm trying to make clear here. You do know that, right?
xx13moons 2 years ago
Forgive my tangent. I just get really annoyed when people repeat nonsensical cliches, and comparing science to religion is one of them. A common claim made by ignorant theists in an effort to bring science down to the level of faith. Sorry, not gonna happen. I'm not saying you're trying to do that, but I've seen it a lot; and it's a terrible, silly mistake.
xx13moons 2 years ago
Well done video. In many ways all the focus on people's sexuality and our culture's overall obsession with sex is dividing our country more than anything.
SisterSunnshine 2 years ago
I can see how this comment could be misconstrued. Pride parades and similar activities are ways to create environments to counter the oppression of the dominant group. They tend to not be understood, or misunderstood because we forget our own privileges and thus the affects lack of them have on our psyche. They aren't the best way or worst way, just the only way some people have come up with at this point to counter the negativity surrounding what they are being oppressed for. -cont
Dedgurlsingblu 2 years ago
These are often attached to historical events, and additionally serve to include celebrations geared toward marginalized groups. As another poster said, I think the "pride" part is often where people get confused. In its use in these cases, its met I am proud of certain characteristics which dominant culture claims I should be ashamed of.
Dedgurlsingblu 2 years ago 2
Oh, and I wanted to point out one more thing, there are a tone of white pride, heterosexual pride, etc. things, but, to borrow something from Tim Wise, when your stuff, is the stuff by which all other things are measured with you don't have to say "white", or straight" or "able bodied", or anything else because those things are simply viewed as the norm, and thus become invisible.
Dedgurlsingblu 2 years ago 2
Good points, especially at the end when you said that these pride movements end up highlighting our differences over our similarities. Maybe it's just a poor choice of words. I have a great deal of respect for my heritage but that isn't exactly the same thing as pride, although that's how people usually phrase it. There can also a fine line between "pride" and a claim of supremacy, which leads to a double standard. "Gay pride" and "white pride" end up having very different connotations.
