I keep getting an error message that reads "Could not complete command because selected area is empty." I tried selecting so many different ways, including deselecting... I don't know how to fix this.

How do you create a shape with holes in it? Like a ring for example?

@Spolings Basically the same way. Create the shape and then using the pen tool (on path setting) or marquee tool cut out the space you don't want.
