If you read the book, the mother thinks that even as a baby Kevin liked to torture her. He would cry constantly no matter what she did. This trailer shows her looking for some connection with him and being rejected.

Give the child what he needs, instead of just looking at him. He obviously wants sometime, ignoring it won't make it go away. Maybe he wants feeding, maybe he wants putting to sleep. I always see the odd parent in the street or on a bus, getting or wound up for no reason when their child calls mom, what a surprise, their all females who lose their rag.
