  • many thanks

  • tested the 1/2" tape, it doesn't work :( I think the brand was Quantegy 456, maybe that was the 2" tape (don't have any of that). Either way I'll have to figure something out. I don't have any SVHS on hand, I tried normal VHS and DAT and they didn't work. Might as well not even bother with 1/8" cassette tape, much too small to line up with a guitar string.

  • @hotlanta71 Make sure you're testing the backing, not the oxide. The oxide doesn't conduct at all, so you'll need to use single-sided tape. Cassette tape won't work, because it has oxide on both sides.

I just tested a DAT tape and it worked fine, although the resistance (per inch of tape) was almost double that of the 1/4" tape that I used in the video. VHS doesn't appear to work at all.

  • thanks a lot for this video and idea! I was gathering info to put my own ribbon controller together, and trouble finding a good resistive element that was on hand...I have a bag of spliced and (not) discarded 1/2" tape! thanks again.

  • @hotlanta71 Your welcome! Just be sure to test the resistance of each piece of tape, because it varies from brand to brand. I even found subtle differences between different sections of the same tape.
