Don't think that's a crane... I don't think the wingspan is right or the neck length, because you see it bending down to peck beforehand, but some large bird, yeah, it looks like it. The thing is a lot of people say it's just edited over. THAT I don't think most of us can ever know anything about. But in this video, that is definitely a bird... an emu, or peacock, or something. It's really hard to tell though in grainy footage until someone points it out to you, though.
This is the edited version. people say that they cut that scene out and re-did the entire thing. I dont know the real story cause i didnt know about it then. It shocked me when my mom told me. But I been told that they stopped selling it when they realized that, that had happened. Like the original version. SO IDK. But thats what i heard. Thought id share that. Mk peace out.
Anyone who thinks it's a person hanging themself is stupid. It a bird because before they actually start going down the trail, you see the full bird. But when they do go down they trail, it spreads it's wings
Alot of people don't see, to notice this but if u watch the scene with the tin man's song, around the part when he starts to dance, if you look behind Dorothy and the scarecrow you can see the bird
guy u know this is all a cover up right? go buy the unedited version of this from 1990 on VHS i have it and he really does hang himself they refilmed that scence twice not because he commited sucide but because the scence was done wrong and in the first one the guy kills himself
At 0:08 you can see that it's a bird pecking at something on the ground/floor. Then a few seconds later it spreads it's wings. The cast was walking towards it, doing that funny walk while singing loudly, so it instinctively spread its wings to make itself appear bigger to its possible predators.
@Billinois78 The bird is there because it is supposed to cover up the suicide, the man is actually the bird, an editor added virtual legs and a beak to him,, and the reason, the 'bird' flapped its wings, was because the munchkin waved hi to Julia (Dorthy). So they made it look like a bird flapped it wings
@XxTheCraziesxX The actresses name was Judy Garland, as Dorothy. Not Julia. If it was a cover-up, and there is supposedly this 'earlier version' I've heard people talk about without the bird, then where is it? I haven't found it on this site. Why doesn't someone upload it? I have to see it to believe it. If there is an upload then please direct me to it.
This ones iffy. First one I've seen, but other people are saying that the color/black and white version got edited. But what I would like to know is if the studio is haunted because of this whole thing?
@kmoney2800 and usually hanging is vertical, not horizontal. LOL
in another clip like this, we can clearly see it's a grey crowned crane, Balearica regulorum, from Africa. They are relatively easy to keep in a park.
It is totally a bird cuz as u can c in the scene there is birds flying or walking around the movie so yeah it's a bird! and if u say it aint a bird why did they allow the other animals to get in like Toto, the colorful horse, and the geese that were layinbg eggs in the scene...(I think the gooses came from Charlie and the chocolate factory) :P
Yeah, really...considering no individual Munchkins were given on-screen credit (they were collectively billed as "The Singer Midgets", after agent Leo Singer, who furnished them to MGM for the movie), I seriously doubt they'd resort to such drastic measures. Besides, anyone who'd kill themselves over not getting a part wouldn't last a wk in Hollywood! LOL
Um.. Ok.. so first off.. Its not true... its ANOTHER urban myth... secondly..... and remember this.... Not EVERYTHING that is on TV is true... Or the Newspapers... or... (brace yourself)... the Internet !
It is an emu that escaped from an adjacent set (they kept shooting without catching it I guess) and there is another scene where it runs across the trees
looks like an ostrich, but whats it doing on set? The ostrich looks giant, none of this adds up at all. And, i can tell its an ostrich because of its long back body
@kaolyne2 look down the yellow brick road, and it's by the trees. I don't know if this is real or not.. I'm in the middle. :P

It's not a crane, nor a munchkin. It is the original scarecrow. he was so drunk, they fired him, for revenge he hung himself on stage.

It was harder to see when the movie was in black and white; tht's probably why all the rumors came about.

The movie was never black and white. The Kansas portion was, but when Dorothy got to Oz, the movie was in color.
