Actually how Joe Kucan really became Kane was rather boring. After Acting since he was 8 years old and being with a theatre company which he co-founded in his 20's he was approached by Westwood for a job as an actor on the C&C95 project. From there he just took the reigns and helped in leading the continued development of C&C.

They never intended for him to be the bad guy, but he did a test scene to try out the compression tools they had (inwhich he acted), and the play testers thought he was "really cool", so they made him Kane.
