the story line and acting was good, the props and everything else was pathetic. I mean it was set in 1735 but they were wearing sun glasses, there was a jeep in the movie and the backgroud you could see the high rise of cape town city. I also felt that there was no need for the cheesy secretaries at the beginning.
@Paddy2Noble I just watched this movie. The "modern" prop elements were there as part of the story. To demonstrate, in a not so subtle way, that social attitudes really haven't hanged all that much in nearly 300 years.
@Paddy2Noble couldn't agree more. They even used plastic bags to collect bird eggs. Plastic wasn't even invented until over a century later. Whether intended or not these 'modern props' didn't help with making the film more real, instead those elements I found very distracting from the story.
@bfn1964 thank you. the modern prop thing didn't work for me. It was confusing and it made the story line worse. I think they should have been more succinct in the the way the film was made in its authentic time. Either in the 1700s or during modern times. I really was confusing. We have to remember this is a gay story, and if being gay doesn't have its problems they don't need to make it confusing on film.
"Intentional anachronisms - such as transistor radios, electric typewriters and jeeps - are also used in the film to illustrate Greyson's larger theme that homophobia and racism of the type that led to Blank's and Jacobsz' executions are still very much present in today's world."
A crime for LOVING someone! Imagine all the pain the world could have been spared if men--especially men from different backgrounds--had been allowed to love each other.
This movie was really good. The cinematography and subtle bits that (intentionally) don't fit in the time period gave it a unique quality. The plot is pretty basic, but the character interactions are what drives it. The trailer makes it look like romp after romp, but it's not.
wow, 1735, nice to know the world has changed..NOT!

Man, to be in love with another guy - and of a different RACE, too, in that time period - I don't think I could imagine that kind of pressure :O
