What I hear in his voice is a bit of denial at what he knows is coming. The last of his family is dying and within himself, he knows there's nothing he can do. But for the sake of his sister and that part of himself that wants to believe things will be okay, he stays upbeat without the desperation. Just a thought.

Whenever my 3-year-old niece gives something to someone, she always likes to say "I made it for you!" When I watched this scene and I heard Setsuko say the very same thing and sound almost exactly like my niece, my heart stopped beating for a few seconds. That's how strong this scene is.

@kingdomofthenight No. The English version had terrible acting and it bugged the hell out of me that most of the names were grossly mispronounced. Most English dubs are like this. I'll admit that Grave of the Fireflies had one of the better ones but it still took a lot away from the film.

Japanese anime with a really good English dub? Azumanga Daioh. The acting was really good in that one. Unfortunately, that's very hard to find. Usually it just doesn't hold up.
