  • This scene points out that Luke would follow the same path as his father if he joined the dark side

  • The Reason why his own face is in the vader helmet is because that is a warning telling luke what happpens if he turns to the dark side.

  • you have a video of his vision of seeing his dad kill everyone at the Jedi temple?

  • I guess in KOTOR 2 you go to a cave like this, but instead of future and such, it is back in the past

  • The most thrilling scene in all Star Wars saga.

  • after watching this movie a billion times I finally get this scene!

  • ...I know it symbolises something...I, er, I just don't know what....help...please

  • I think the prequels could have been amazing if George Lucas had nothing to do with them lol

  • @darkstar3x16 yes, it's ironic how the best star wars movie(considered by many) is directed by someone other than Lucas

  • IS THE ENDING REAL?????????????? CAUSE DARTH VADER DID NOT GET KILLED.TELL ME TRUE OR FALSE

  • @thomascars1 When Luke went to Dagobah, he encountered Yoda who would train him to become a Jedi, and Yoda told him to go into a cave, but that Vader Luke faced was a manifestation of the dark side, called "The Dark Spirit", witch fought Luke with the form of Luke as Darth Vader

  • @thomascars1 No, it's all a vision. It's to test his loyalty to the light side of the Force and his ability to resist the Dark Side. He fails by giving in to his anger and attacking.

  • someone explain me this scene please, is it a vision of the future, a test of the dark side, i dont get it, or is it to show that vader is related to luke, why did he have luke face under that mask? idk

  • @adelnhanna This was a test of his resiliance to the Dark Side. He goes into the cave and fights an apparition, which represents his soul if he falls to the Dark Side, he will be forced to take the same path of his father. He fails this test by giving into anger and striking down this Vader to avenge Kenobi.

  • @beastlysword no it means that vader is lukes father , and that if luke kills vader he will be the emprorer' apprentice and it IS vision

  • @funnieism An apparition IS a vision. It can be interpreted differently, so your thoughts are as good as mine.

  • @beastlysword oh i get it thx

  • @beastlysword No !!!! He failed because he gave up the Jedi councel in order to play the voice of the Joker. The Joker dressed himself up as Vader and when Luke struck him down, What they voided out was Luke lauphing like the Joker. He then turned back into just being Mark Hammel. Thats the face you see in the helmet. It was originally going to be Haydens scene, but he wasn't born yet !!!!! Ginn saw this when he was fighting Maul.

  • @Tom6093 Where the hell did you get your crazy delusions? >.>....

  • @TheHeroofShadows000 Lol. From God ...And the force. I'm Jedi Tom6093. Are you a good Jedi or a Bad Sith ?

  • @Tom6093 Yeah, uh....God doesn't exist and the Force is completely different from that religious bull crap....But if I had to chose sides, Jedi FTW.....

  • @TheHeroofShadows000 Ahhh.... an atheist ..you are !!!!! I believe in the possibility of God. Quantum Physics talks of alternate Universe, realities, maybe even a spititual realm where I think the possibility might be for God.

I'm no Evangelistic Christian, but......oh well...such is life.

  • @Tom6093 XD, don't worry. I don't have a religion, but as long as people don't get in my face about theirs, I'll respect them. It's their lives after all, it's their choices, not mine....

  • @TheHeroofShadows000 Lol. I went to the Raw Tour ( WWE wrestling) There were these preachers yelling that we were all sinning against God and that we idolized sports over him. I RETORTED with, " Jesus told me to come to this event , because he wanted me to tell Vince Mcmahon to not worship money. But i have to wait and watch the event first. The douche believed it.

  • @Tom6093 Wow, how deluded do you think they can get?

  • @TheHeroofShadows000 Lol. I don't know. It scares me to even think I might be even in the same catagory as they are considering....I believe in God.

  • @Tom6093 That's definately scary....

  • @TheHeroofShadows000 " Please God, ...Please help me not to be another Evangelistic Christian that kisses your ass and tells people their going to hell for sinning. Please help me not to be a bible thumping Douche bag that has nothing better in life then to only think about heaven and serving you, when I still have a life here on earth thats going just fine. But could you do us a favor,....Maybe give us some kind of sign that you exist, other then the bible and obnoxious street preachers?

  • @Tom6093 I agree....

  • if in Luke's vision he died then vision Vader went to kill Yoda lol or what if the vision Darth Vader was the real him and killed Luke and Yoda that would of been awesome

  • The first time I saw this I was confused.. I was watching all 6 for the first time and when he first knocked the head off I was like wait a minute!! They haven't had the I am your father scene or all the stuff in 6!! Then when lukes face appeared I felt stupid lol. I mean when Luke asked what was in the pit yoda did say "whatever you take it to be." lol

  • I can only imagine people's shock and confusion when they first saw this scene.

    So dark and powerful...

  • Notice when Luke's saber makes contact with Vader's it winks out. *Sigh* They got the technology to fix it. Why don't they do something?

  • One of the greatest moments in movies.

  • I have to be honest. The prequls seem so corny compared to the old ones. People forget that Lucas didnt direct Empire or Return. Not only that but the old ones had much better actors who gave the movies soul.

  • Shortest battle ever

  • I think I understand the vision now. It's not because Luke took his weapons with him. It's because he was receiving a message about the future. Look at Episode VI: Return of the Jedi when he faced his dad and Palpatine. If he had given in to his anger and fought Anakin, he would've ended up like him. He DID give in at first, but his love was stronger and he chose not to fight him. As a result, he saved himself and Anakin. That vision was a warning not to fight, not to give in to anger.

  • what the hell happened? the prequels had quality actors and actresses just like the original trilogy! but the original trilogy had way better quality acting. the new ones are okay but kinda shitty. i mean, the moment the movie starts out, theres fucking action! look at TPM, then land and not 5 minutes later, their ship is gone and they have their sabers out. AotC... the ship lands the people exit and BOOM! its blown to bits. and RotS??? ya, you know where im goin with this.

  • @jediguardian10 Look at a new hope, though? There's the battle on tantive IV

  • @Sinker861 ya. but that was short and sweet. no lightsabers. and it was security vs. stormies. then after that, the action stopped. and the good acting came in. no jar jar, no stupid subplots just good, quality acting and a storyline that ADDED to the plot unlike in TPM where the subplots CLUNG to the plot.

  • I love this scene, you see Lukes fear... Darth Vader. Seeing Vader walking and Luke's expression is unforgettable. As a kid I went bannas, "how did vader get there ?" Jeez I love how this scene and how reflects to us that we all at times have to face our fears, and inner demons or they will consume us.

I have to say Vader is the most badass sith there ever was.

  • @23Revan84 I have to diagree with you there. I think Darth Maul is the best Sith ever

  • @Sinker861 WHAT!? Darth Maul ? Darth Maul was a talented sith, but he barely lived to make a difference. He didnt even live through an episode! Plus Vader was a way stronger sith than Maul could have ever been.

  • @23Revan84 Actually Darth Maul survived being chopped in half by Obi-Wan. He got a robotic underneath and started hunting Obi-Wan. He finally found him on Tatooine while he was watching over Luke. While they were fighting, Owen Lars got a rifle and almost shot his face off. It says on Wookieepedia, so if you don't believe me, have a look!

  • @23Revan84 aniken vader yes, this vader couldn't do squat. a shadow of a sith really. ever sith would own him.

  • @Sinker861 yeah i think in maul vs vader, maul would win

  • @Sinker861 do you know anything about darth vader!?!? darth maul didn't know how to use the force, darh vader was the chosen one. he could destroy anything in his path and darth maul can get cut in half by an APRENTICE!!!! you just like maul because he has a double-bladed light saber!

  • @ironmanfan001 not true, it is true that darth m,aul couldnt use the force well. BUT, Maul was trained with several fightstyles unlike most jedis, maul had like 4 fightstyles and a double lightsaber, which made him one of the most powerful siths ever(i say ONE OF THE MOST)

  • @Sinker861 HAHAHAH Darth Maul the best sith ever?!?! Dude your on drugs right?

  • i never understanded this part

  • This part of the movie is whats known as a "Vision Quest"

  • he met himself as sith because he took his weapons with

  • "Remember your failure at the cave." - Yoda.

Luke kinda gave into his anger briefly, and the image of Luke under Vader's helmet was meant to illustrate what would have happened if he chose the Dark Side.

All he had to do was maintain his calm in the midst of the Dark Side. He raised his blade before the vision did it, hence why Yoda stated Luke would not need his weapons.

  • @MainHeretic

    “Luke: What's in there?

Yoda: Only what you take with you.”

  • @WhiteRavenAnim

    EXACTLY!

  • AND IT'S A HOME RUN!~

  • My take on this scene is that his face in the helmet means he is really fighting his inner self. His anger and conflicts. He doesn't have that peace to yet become a true jedi.

  • makes sense to me :P

  • That's supposed to be Luke's face he sees in Darth Vader's helmet, but prop limitations didn't make that very clear.

  • it was his face!

  • What I thought would be cool was if Lucas ever made a future re-release of this movie on DVD, he should make Luke's lightsaber blade red in this scene to show that he was giving in to the darkside and temptation.

  • This is one of my favorite lightsaber battles!

  • I know.. it's so intense

  • this used to scare me to death, but now i think that this scene is ultra cool

  • he was walking to close to the dark side therefore he fought vader, his only knowledge of the dark side, and it turned out to be him, signifying that he was slowly going down the same path his father went

  • yeah, thx for that interpretation, never thought this way :)

  • what would he have 2 do 2 make it right?

  • its a double metaphor

    1. Luke is using the force to see the future, his genetic relation to Darth Vader, but does not yet understand it.

    2. Luke is overcoming is fears about his inevitable confrontation with the dark side of the force.

  • Well, at first I thought it was supposed to symbolize that Luke is fighting against his own blood, but HaynStyleAmvs' point of view is waaaay better :)

  • Luke was not supposed to take his weapons into the cave with him as yoda instructed. He was supposed to face his fear and overcome it. Instead he fought his fear. He succumbed to it, by striking down vader he allowed his emotions to take control of his actions. When it turns out his head was in the helmet. It shows what luke what would be to come if he does not control his emotions, he will turn into his father. Which is vader.

  • Thanks. That's a really good explaination.

  • well put

  • That's deep man

  • @HaynStyleAmvs true

  • According to the douche bags at wikipedia, this was Luke's trial in order to become a full fledge Jedi knight.

  • I is more stronger than Darth Vapor

  • One of the few things I dislike about TESB is that the colour of Lukes saber doesn't match the colour of the one he had in ANH.

In that movie the blade had an aqua/aquamarine tint to it, but in this one it's just a standard light blue. I like the aquamarine blade, and I think it contrasts nicely with Obi-Wan's standard blue blade.

  • but doesnt he make his own in this movie?

  • It's ROTJ where he has his own saber.

  • Where do you get that from? He was using his green saber on Tatooine against Jabba' men, BEFORE Yoda died, and Yoda didn't even have a lightsaber in the original movies.

  • lie. Luke did not steal that lightsaber, he constructed it himself when he became a jedi knight, even in episode 6 Darth Vader said: " I see you constructed a new lightsaber".

  • @DarthFilip999 no obi-wan gave a lightsaber to him when luke first came in remember or not not sure ha ha

  • @DarthFilip999 I thought he used his father's old lightsaber. The one Obi Wan stole.

  • @360Nomad In episodes 4 and 5 he did, but in Return of the Jedi he built his own lightsaber, which is a requirment to become a Jedi Knight. Also, there is a deleted scene of him building it, search youtube you'll probably find it

  • "They don't show him steal it though".

    Therefore you made it up.

  • In the book "Star Wars The Life and Legend of Obi-Wan Kenobi" by Ryder Windham, it says that in between episode 5 and 6 (not directly but it says Han is in Jabba's Palace), Luke goes to Obi-Wan's home on Tatooine and reads his journal and learns how to make a new one. Padawans are supposed to model their lightsaber after their masters, so he probably made it green after Yoda who taught him the ways of the Force (or at least what Obi-Wan didn't teach him).

  • No. In the book "Star Wars The Life and Legend of Obi-Wan Kenobi" by Ryder Windham, it says that in between episode 5 and 6, Luke goes to Obi-Wan's home on Tatooine and reads his journal and learns how to make a new one. Padawans are supposed to model their lightsaber after their masters, so he probably made it after Yoda who taught him the ways of the Force (or at least what Obi-Wan didn't teach him).

  • Yeah you're right, but Luke didn't have his lightsaber modeled after Yoda's. It's just that he had Yoda's color but had Obi-Wan's handle.

  • Empire Strikes Back,Revenge of the Sith,Return of the jedi and the phantom menace are my favorites

  • not really a duel, but a cool scene.

  • This is how a REAL lightsaber duel would go. Short, sweet, to the point. And the point is taking your opponents head off, not sitting there batting and knocking away at the lightsaber.

  • says the lightsaber duel expert.

  • But yedi's arent allowed to kill remember?

  • They can kill out of defense, but not from attack.

  • of course they can kill...just when u have someone unarmed like count dooku when anakin cut off his arms then u shouldnt kill him...basically when you duel and the enemy has his lightsaber they can kill..

  • @cshcrazy you must have no friends caue you dont know how to spell

  • I totally forgot about this duel until they showed it on here. There are 13 duels in all, not 12. And I thought 13 was unlucky.

  • @ob1starwars as a matter of fact it's 14 duels, you've missed one or you didn't count the duel against grievous considering he's not a sith

  • when i sall the movie i was like darth vader fights bette than that.

  • when i saw the movie,i didn't know it was a vision,and i was like,oh no!the saga is over!

  • What's cool is that Luke almost did take vader's head off when luke fighs him on cloud city

  • As much as I like the entire Star Wars saga, I have to say that the first three were by far the best. I do like the prequil trilogy for what it is. But if I had to choose one from the prequil trilogy, I'd say that The Phantom Menace was the best.

  • I like the whole saga too but the prequels, as good as they are, can never top the originals. Out of the prequels I like The Phantom Menace too. The Empire Strikes Back is the best of the saga and the originals.

  • Or that in killing vader he's only killing himself, as Vader is his father. In that sense they are the same person

  • Your are correct in some ways, but one of the real reasons he see's himself as Darth Vader is. This vision is showing him what can happen to a person when they fall to the darkside.

  • 0:04 - luke is like "OH SHIT"

  • Coolest thing Ever.

  • There was never anything this hauting and powerful in the Prequels.

  • so true

  • @TheConservavive Maybe its because nobody went to Degobah in the prequals? however Star killer visited this same cave and had a more intense vision about his future and yoda told him to folllow it.

....Just spreading star wars trivia. I hate when people say bad things about the prequals just because they werent like the sequals.

  • @TheConservavive

There hasn't really been anything this haunting in 25 yrs my man.

  • was he just imagining this?

  • @rappineggman10 That Vader he fought was a manifestation of the dark side, called "The Dark Spirit" Witch took the shape of Luke As Darth Vader

  • Somebody has got to tell Luke he was trippin' LOL!

  • i like when he sees himself in the mask

  • I did too. It was creepy, but I think it was like a warning to Luke that he could suffer Vader's fate if he doesn't control his fear and anger.

  • this scene from the movie ''empire stikes back'',i think so,Number 5

  • This scene gave me the chills when i was just a kid, still does...

  • The most symbolic part of the movies, the most personally memorable (scared the crap out of me when I was a kid)and perhaps the deepest.

The purpose of this scene gets into Jungian psychology (which influenced Joseph Campbell WHO influenced Lucas). Luke meets his "Shadow Self" essentially. Eventually he comes to terms with it. We all have shadows.

To this day (20 some years later) I still have dreams of Darth Vader chasing me around.

  • hahahahahahahaha

  • The cave was infused with the Dark Side 100's of years earlier when Yoda took out a Dark Jedi. His spirit manifested itself into the cave and its surroundings.

  • i have a different take on it. Yoda's initial comments are simply a ruse to force luke to confront his fears; a test to see how ready his is. Luke fails because he took weapons and attacked his vision instead of being brave enough to confront it. it was all in his head (instigated by Yoda). there's no evidence of it being a supernatural event caused by demons of the dark side. luke simply allows his fears get the better of him. the vision inside the mask is a warning of the future

  • Apologies. I referenced some outside Canon facts from novels. A Knight had defeated a Dark Jedi in a prequel novel, at which point the infusion occurred. Later, Luke sent some students of his own there and the Dark Jedi captured one of them for a brief period. I just wanted to enhance the reason the place was strong in the Dark Side for viewers.

  • the books are cannon

  • Sweet! So you would weigh in equivalently as to the reason for the infusion. But Chiz95 made a good point on the interpretation as to why Luke failed, a separate issue. What's your take on why he failed?

  • I think it was because he was afraid and brought wepons like earlier in the movie the cave is to face your fears and by staying afraid and bringing his weponshe had subjected himself to his fear. just my two cents

  • what the hell do you mean by that??

  • I think he means unless you have authorization copying the movies is illegal. Because the movies do have copyrights.

  • I remember this scene from Episode 5 and this shows Luke used his anger instead of his Jedi ways to defeat his enemy and the face of Luke on Darth Vader shows what future he has if he defeats Vader using his anger but anyways, this is a cool part of episode 5. Thanks for putting it up Phatooine. :)

  • Coolest Shit Ever.
