With the lead shield the counters measured radiation in excess of 100 rem. Bear in mind this was with a small lead shield.
Why is NASA doing this research now when the research was already done in the 50/60s?
The magnetic field and the Van Allen Belts are not the same thing. The Van Allen belts are there because of the Solar Wind and cosmic radiation that gets trapped in the magnetic field. The intenisy of the radiation varies throughout the 11 year cycle of the sun.
The inner belt starts about 400 miles above the surface of the planet. No manned craft orbits above 300-350 miles above Earth because of the dangers of trapped radiation.
