I saw this when it was playing in 1982, it was just before my 8th birthday, but I don`t seem to remember this scene. I`ve thought back recently to what scenes I can recall when I watched it that time, but this one just doesn`t come up. cgi suck's why go through all the pain staking effort to create a convincing creature, make it interact with the cast just to fill it with suck in the future i think cgi should be used in very small moderation... like space ship's, outer space,exploding head's,alien's only when climbing wall's etc!

The CGI only works at one point: watching ET run. I actually thought that was pretty cool because it's really confusing in the original. Apart from that, the CGI was pointless.

@83phatman agreed because nobody is going to run in a linear fashion especially when you're running through a forest with bumps and rocks on the ground. that was the only beneficial CGI moment in the film otherwise they ruined ET's classic image like in the cornstalk scene for example when Elliot points his flashlight into ET's face. that was so stupid. the original ET in that scene is so much creepier and really cool and intense. you have this scary build up for nothing in the 2002 version.

Both Lucas and Spielberg have done creepy moments in their films but as they've gotten older and have kids, they start worrying about other kids.....especially hate this redone scene because now, he looks like a cartoon instead of an actual creature.

@Nikki279 sorry for writing this kind of late because your comment is 4 months old. the original is indeed on dvd. if you still don't have the original on dvd then set up an amazon account. that's what i did. and be sure to look for the 2 disc limited collector's edition dvd. it has both versions: the 2002 digitized version and the original theatrical 1982 version with a lot of bonus features on this disc. i highly recommend it if you don't already have it. again sorry for this late comment.
