  • Such brass.....

  • My name is Mathilde and i'm proud!

  • 28 justin bieber fans missed the like button

  • @planetraptor420 OH DEAR I ACCIDENTALLY PRESSED THUMBS DOWN

  • the most fabulous singer ever.

  • Scott Walker (born Noel Scott Engel), whether with The Walker Brothers in the 60's, or a solo artist in the 70's, 80's & 90's, to the present, is one of the finest singers ever to make a recording. He sings as well today as he did 40+ years ago. Truly, he is one for the ages.

  • Just got done watching 30th century man and all i have to say is, wow. I had NO clue who this man was untill i watched it. His voice enters my ears and gives my soul and brain a nice big massage. He's definitely changed my views on music.

  • Scott is such a gorgeous man, perfect! I love this video, especially when he says "My heart, my heart stop beating so" it melts my heart every time.

  • this guy the new scott walker? - search 'woven orbit'

  • It's sad the name scott walker has been soiled.

  • The Republicans campaigned for less government, and now they are trying to wipe out collective bargaining for state employees. The Republicans are hypocrites. These people who used voter anger to get elected will not be re-elected.

Is this the governor of Wisconsin? I didn't know he used to be a singer.

  • @parafleet No....

Whenever I hear his name in the news I think of THIS Scott Walker.

  • I saw someone do a version of this in a play and it was WAY BETTER. This song is good but the guy had emotion and he wasn't really singing, almost reciting it. Very good.

  • What a voice!

  • A few months ago Scott Walker took over my brain and he has shown no sign of leaving. Also, I could watch this video a thousand times! So great.

  • Scott Walker is a GOD.

  • Yes, Brel! & I also enjoy MOST of SWs fare; he has a beautiful baritone voice, so 'UN'popish. I can't find any info. about his personal life, can anyone help? Just things like - how on earth did he fall into a 'pop' band (Walker Bros.) given his temperament & bent on the perverse? did he ever do musical theatre? 'what REALLY makes him tick, is he as complex & as 'dark' as he projects? did he ever marry?..etc etc. He is one very intriguing chappy! He's a real study within himself...

  • This is so great (the voice, the gestures and the song itself of course) : I like Scott Walker best when he's singing Brel

  • All the song needs is a didgeridoo & a theremin!

  • Scott !!!! Sexy as hell...........wow!

  • That's not Dusty Sprigfield doing the intro, is it?

  • @dognitive why yes it is

  • @dognitive its dame vera lynn

  • c est honteux, seul jacques brel sait chanter jacques brel!... Scott Walker, je suis d accord, la chante tres bien mais jamais il n egalera l emotion qu arrive partager Jacques Brel dans ses interpretations...

  • @raf99100 Faux.

  • This is the recorded version!!!

  • ...You People? are insane

  • you have a warped mind. grow up from your teenaged mind you scumbag.

  • Jacques Brel is by far the best (qualitatively and quantitatively) songwriter french language has had. And young Scott did a great job covering him. The only fact he showed interest in Brel's work says a lot about the boy's refinement.

  • Really? He's a legend, no doubt, but I think Serge Gainsbourg gives him a run for his money.

  • Ok, this is just my humble opinion. I'm really fond of Gainsbourg but I think his work is less ambitious. SG's poetry is lighter, more suggestive, often putting emphasis on sounds rather than meaning, he plays a lot with the structure and sound of words. JB on the other hand is a storyteller. wether he's depicting his contemporaneans with acid, barking at womens or remembering his youth, his poetry is visceral. So yeah, they're quiet different but definitly both outstanding artists.

  • @elpitiuso How do you quantify song writing? Surely you can't.

  • @billiesrus Just measure the amount of songs published. Duke Ellington for example published more than 700 songs, while T. Monk published something like 70. They are the top two most popular Jazz songwriters. Both are equal qualitatively, though Duke kinda beats Monk quantitatively.

  • @CasualtyofYouthVids Ah yeah I guess, fair point. It was so long ago I posted that comment I can't even remember what the point of my argument was.

  • Bless you Dusty! A voice like yours was so unique!

Love Scott Walker's songs and thanks for posting this one!!

  • God he is just the ultimate celebrity; Phenomenally talented, ludicrously modest and very reclusive.

And his 2 most recent albums are the most astonishing things I have ever heard. I love that man! :]

  • :):):):):)

  • Brel is Brel and Engel is Engel. This makes for a million times better rip-off than Donna Summer raping and goring 'MacArthur Park', or Chrissie Hines' horrible 'I go to sleep'.

French is alien to me, thanks to Scott and Shuman I understand what it is all about. The English translations of Tango Funebre and that satire on army whore houses; delightful. And still 100% Brel.

  • wow, the singer from franz ferdinand sounds pretty much just like him. and even some of the lyrics seem to be ripped.

  • That's not a comparison I've heard before, but now you mention it, yes, I'm seeing it. F F are usually compared to Gang of Four, although they sound nothing like them and aren't fit to piss on their shoes, nor this man's either. (curmudgeonly grumblings, etc....)

  • i mean ff have ripped from him. i don't know why i made that comparison...

  • The translation, made by Mort Schuman is excellent, it's exactly what Brel was singing in french !

  • Its clever writing. Its better than some of the translations that are made of Brels other songs. Still its as if the original was hit by a truck, but then brought back to life via the pet cemetery.

  • That Mathilde! She's been around the block a few times.

Scott, the reason Mathilde's coming back to you is that Jacque Brel chucked her out. The little tramp!

  • Parfait! think he wouldve been great on stage in a big production-but would have been below him...

  • No wait, you're looking in the mirror. Turn round and watch the video

  • my mum fancys scott like mad lol he is a magic musician tho

  • Scott is an excellent singer BUT no one can sing it half as GORGEOUS as only Brel could!!!

  • rules!!

  • Two things:

    1. The recorded version is better.

    2. Listen to Scott Walker's later work if you doubt his talent.

  • @Entidus Scott can't bear to listen to his own extremely oppressive later work once recorded.Tobh I can see where he's coming from. I'll stick with his earlier stuff

  • @Entidus why are you apologizing? Just another stop in a long diverse and complex creative career.

  • Yeahh, Mathilde is great tune!

This video is very enjoyable, I like this way to make a gig.

  • Great cover!

  • Happy Birthday Mr. Engel (better known as Scott Walker!!)

Wishing you good health and a lot moments of happiness. May God bless you on your special day!

Stay as beautiful as you are!!!!

  • he was all the time on LSD XD

  • Sounds likehe almost turned Dusty straight :)

  • My name is mathilde lol :D

  • Now there is a coincidence, so is mine, and I'm a male!!

    What a mind blast!!!

  • is that good or bad meant from you?!

  • Neither good or bad, just a little humour to brighten up your day:)

    Stay cool!

  • All that hippie lighting in the background distracts from his performance!

When he walks out he also looks so self concious and clumsy.

  • i was thinking the exact. same. thing. lol. weird...

  • a fitting tribute to brel. walker is a genius

  • lol my name is scott walker

  • woooooo sames!!!

  • Why each singer MUST sing Jacques Brel??

After all, Jacques Brel made his songs to sing himself them!

  • Walker is singing a song, he is a singer.

Brel was sing a song, but he was a chansonier.

It is a very great difference, there is no tradition of the torch song in the manner of brel, even the english phrase torch song doesn't cover it.

It is a uniquely french phenomena, so if it doesn't translate it can hardly be blamed on Walker.

have a listen to Walkes recorded versions of Brel, there's a lot more passion there than here.

  • What some people here don't seem to realize is that Walker isn't trying to be traditionally "moving" like Brel, his genius is in how he sings every lyric with the same level of emotion. He's interested in tone more so than hammy expression.

  • But his tone is crap, everyone knows he isn't trying to move like Brel- but he could at least sing with more heart.

  • Scott removed all raw emotion and passion from this song... when you see Jacques singing it, you feel it. You feel it's real, he really hates and loves Mathilde, and he IS going to hell for it!

  • I agree with you. But I would say give Scott a break on this. He has all the stage presence of a preying mantis with shin splints. Whereas Brel was a genius on stage and a great pantomime.

  • You must be French . . .

  • The funny thing is, I'm English .

So you think I'd be compelled to like Walker but I don't because I can distinguish old common tack from old classics.

(have you heard a French man say ponce before?).

  • No one should be compelled to like anything, and you're entitled to your (wrong) opinion. Also, he's not singing flat, but he does drift sharp once or twice on the various "me" lines.

I wouldn't put it past the French to say anything. Cheeky bastards.

  • I finally see why you prefer this version, because he Walker is'nt French. Cheers for clearing that up.

How many singers have you heard singing with that crap dignified deep tone- too many. Just a 50's alternative to Michael Buble- though Buble could probably hit more notes.

  • To compare Scott Walker to Michael Buble is absurd, offensive, capricious and exposes a general ignorance of his musical legacy.

Listen to the album "Tilt" he realesed in 1995 and hopefully it would open your eyes to Walker's value.

  • Maybe he has talents as a singer. But this piece puts me off listening to him enough.

  • agreed!

    1) Scott Walker or Michael Buble...hmm tough one!

    2) Scott Walker is a genius. so is Brel, but there's no point copying the song exactly is there?

    also, isn't Brel Belgian?

    3) Its not from the 50s

  • When Brel sings the song, he injects it with heartbreak. Walker gives the song a very amusing tone in my opinion.

As you say. There is no point in copying a song exactly.

  • First of all I wouldn't want Walker to even try copying it.

The only thing I find amusing is the tackyness and that isn't a positive.

I just don't think he puts any soul into it.

Yeh Brel is Belgium but the French adore him he's a bit of a Legend over there, like Sinatra to the Americans etcet.

Yep I know he's a Belgium "bobferris' but he's embraced by the french just like Django Rinehardt.

Also bobferris stop knit picking, you know my point and your just trying to sound like a smartass.

  • Jacques Brel is Belgian. You're right and he began to sing in 1953 and stopped in 1977 with his last album "Les Marquises"

  • This guy was flat!..many times!

  • I agree.

  • cannot hear it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • good but Brel is 10000000000000x better and moving...

  • minuslisa I agree,

I like Scott Walker but this really doesn't compare to Brel's version. I did like some of the translation, though.

  • I agree. This version kind of sucks.

  • this guys 40 years ahead of his time

  • How ?

  • cos hes soo cool

  • Does anybody know where this is from.

    BBC Dusty shows?

Anyway it is nice to hear Dusty and Scot who had voices like bugles

  • If this isn't nice, I don't know what is

  • Difficult to hold up the candle to Brel. This baring in mind Scott is not doing to badly! A for efford!

  • It's nice, but it's so americanized... made it into a big smooth show. And because of this it lost some of the songs initial power. Also he's softer on the words than Jacques Brel.

  • One of my favourites - what a voice, what style, and yes, he does have very skinny legs! Haven't you seen all those emo boys in their skinny jeans - it is possible!

I really don't want to, but every time I see Dusty I think of Myra Hindley!

  • Every time i see your picture myra,

i have to take my latest girlfriend and fire her,

and find a prostitute that looks like you and hire her,

    oh me oh myra...

  • c'mon that IS some optical illusion!!!

his legs can't be that skinny!!!

  • What a voice! I love this guy!

  • Dunno why ! but it reminds me of Rimmer from Red Dwarf. Sorry people.

  • legend !

  • just in past, it's an original jaque brel's song (a belgian singer)translate

  • He sounds like Nino Bravo hahaha! cool :p

  • Yeah, nino bravo imitated him a lot.

That´s allright with me, just as Scott is singing Brel´s song.

  • Scott Walker is a genius!!!

  • Very dramatic performance. First Rate! (And Dusty looks so lovely at the intro.)

  • fILMBLANC, YOU SAY YOU CAN'T IMAGINE THE WORLD WITHOUT SCOTT WALKERS ALBUM "TILT"

WELL I HAVE TROUBLE AT ALL AND THAT WORLD IS A LOT BETTER PLACE WITHOUT IT!

  • rocknmovies, I think you have summed up Scott Walker in a nutshell!

Musically, I keep seeing him moving down that downward spiralling road, that leads to Dante's inferno!

  • Just perfect.

  • Not even worthy to be Brel's towel boy.

  • A bit unfair, friend. A brave song choice by a young man carving a solo career and puting Brel into an arena that he wouldn't have had. I think Scott was the inspiration for may devotees of Brel- viz Bowie.

  • I agree

  • weak

  • Just to add that indeed Dusty Springsfield is/was the greatest female British singer ever.

  • He let his personal problems, insecurities overcome his talent and he had bad management too. He had the whole package, talent and good looks, maybe he was also too smart for showbiz and for his own good. Last week I bought the 30 Century Man video, and it brought back lots of memories, good and bad. Because his story is one of saddest in pop, he always claimed he had integrity and yet he was always compromising by singing other people's songs on his albums, and it got worse in the 70's.

  • I am French and I am not a huge Brel fan but I loved Scott's interpretations of his songs. I saw Scott live in the 60's with the Walker Bros. and solo. I loved the Walkers stuff ("The sun ain't gonna shine anymore" is a ballad classic) but I also loved his solo stuff, Scott 4 is indeed a masterpiece. But he was rock's Montgomery Clift: beautiful, doomed and doomy.

  • It's a good voice, but compared to the original... it is very shallow and un-passionate.

  • Not just a singer - a great showman.

  • On the subject of "Tilt" happened to hear a world music show a few years back playing traditional Vietnamese folk music and it sounded a LOT like "Tilt" which could explain many of the lyrics, Farmer in the City. Cockfighter etc and the way he insists on singing in a strained Asian version of his [beloved] natural vocal range. After the USA, European and Asian versions I don't known if I'm ready for Scott goes Eskimo !!!

  • Astonishing voice......but I'm so glad he moved on; I can't imagine a world without "TILT".

  • the best voice ever no one can touch this man

  • Hi, agree fully. Always been a fan of the Walker Brothers and Scott Walker. A fantastic voice and gorgeous to boot. What more can anyone ask?

  • Superior? You are very much wrong. Brel's soul is embodied within that song...Walker is merely producing a replica version of Brel's feeling...

  • superior to brel's version imho

  • This is very good, but it's much more like pop music than Brel, less dramatic, less convincing.

  • Greatest voice ever? I think so.

  • Oh, I love him!!!! What happened to that video where he sang 'Jackie' live? Where is it?

  • Well, I´ve seen him and he was great

  • No, I haven't. Why are you asking??

  • Beautiful to see young Scott here! What voice, what face, what charism. Wow!!

  • johanna - Have you seen Scotran Walker play live?

  • Fantastic! What a voice! Anyone aware of any collaborations Scott might have done with Dusty? It would be a heavenly thing--two of the finest singers ever! Too bad the video quality isn't great, but still this is fantastic!

  • That Englishwoman who rabbits on at the beginning totally kills it. Who let her out of her cage?

  • That's that well known lesbian Dusty Springfield.

  • Its Dusty Springfield and Scott was appearing on her show as a guest. She is probably the best white female soul singer Britain has produced.

  • Oh dear, you just put your foot in it to a great extent.

  • What a pity he stopped so soon, too soon

  • I couldn't immagine that a French song could be as well translated and performed in english.

    It's Great !

  • Scott Walker goes off key on the last vibrato, and yes this version is the one on the record. You might think he would have done it again.:P

  • watch?v=rFHpTQ5V2FI

  • He sounds like Nino Bravo hahaha! cool :p

  • i wish i was scott walker

  • Can you imagine if he were a cotestant on American Idol? No they don't make them like this anymore. Thank you so much for allowing us see this wonderful video.

  • There have been thousands of artists that realised the key to their success was to merely follow the crowd. At least Scott has always tried to be true to himself. If you like him, you love him.

If you don't..... carry on watching the X-factor and marvel at the talent on show.....Moooooooooo!

"Such a small love - such a little tear".

  • Wonderful!

  • This video is a reminder to us all of a SUPERB talent. It is so sad that Scott lost his way over the decades. I cannot think of a better popular singer in my lifetime.

  • HA HA...LOL, this is crap, search for "Jacques Brel Mathilde" as our French speaking friend says "This is nothing next to the origional!"

I mean he has a beautiful voice...but this is Karaoke stuff next to Brel.

  • I loved the Walker Brothers, my favourite time in his career

  • i love you scott, but you should have stayed with the walker brothers!

  • Wash your lugs out casiago!!

  • I will say, to fully appreciate this, listen to his studio recording of it - it's better. It sounds like here he is actually singing live and perhaps a bit nervous. (If it's his first solo time on TV - no wonder - not an easy song to pull off) Still kudos to Scott for trying to introduce Brel to the masses.

  • I love his brel stuff

    I have all him albums

  • I have all his records. Thanks for putting me onto Brel.

    I love DVD to

    NEXT NEXT NEXT

  • Je préfère la version de mon compatriote! Rien de tel que l'original

  • I like the jacque brel version better, this one... has trumpets? what's up with the trumpets?! And the lyrics have been 'softened' for the american viewers, I liked the raw french lyrics better.

    Still a good job though.

  • the 'jaques brel is alive and well and living in paris' album has better versions of the same translations as walker used, but kudos to scott for giving it a go.

  • alright, calm down Casiago, Scott brought Brel to the attention of alot of people, including me, that's only a good thing. Also, I can't speak French, I like the English interpretations

  • whats wrong with you people?? This guy is so boring---he shouldn't be doing Brel---he can't touch it

  • Try album "Tilt" or "The Drift", and try and tell me Scott Walker is boring.

The most riveting and frightening records of the past 10 years--and both are his.
