@bonoboperson The symptoms are, that's for sure! But it's not a disease. It can't be physically proven to exist in a person by any known medical test. E.g. If I told you that you dream because your crazy and I get 10 'experts' to agree and tell you you need to take drugs for the dreams because you have a mental disease but that I can't show you any physical evidence of this to be the case, would you agree with me? Of course not. Road Rage Disorder is also a mental and physical disease?

@sebkarlsson ADHD has been proven to be a real brain disorder. you are correct that it is not a disease, but it is a disorder that is passed on by parents through genetics. the children cannot help it that they have adhd, and there are safe medications for it. it's not a result of bad parenting or laziness. it is actuallya shortage of two chemicals called dopamine and norepinephrine. the disorder affects the frontal lobe, which is the part of the brain that is in charge of impulse control.

@bonoboperson As a former psychology major, I can safely say taht ADHD was never proven to be a brain disorder. It's a theory. There are no genetic tests or any such thing to determine any behavioral problem. Besides, the theory states that ADHD is caused by seratonin, not dopamine.

I feel for the parents, but I question the placement of blame. If the drug was "lethal levels" in her system, then it wasn't inherently the fault of the drug, but the dosage. Taking 100 aspirin will likely kill you, but that doesn't mean aspirin is inherently dangerous.

I think ADHD should be labeled if you are so friggin short of attention span you're a harm to yourself and others. Not a child who perhaps doesn't get enough exercise, or doesn't "sit still." Like someone said what is this so called thing called normal? I am willing to bet if psychiatry went back in time a good portion of us would have been ADHD back in the day. Back then there was no such thing as mentally ill kids. How come? why do the numbers seem to be rising?

How have they dealt with 'mental illness' in the past? Simply, and it wasn't much of an issue; usually it was seen as eccentric or a nack or other things. Bottom line: it's bs, just like you say.

@sebkarlsson The problem is we're treating people out of context-they dx based on a laundry list of symptoms, but fail to look at the other obvious causes. Did anyone ever think to look at the big picture- like the boring school curriculum, or the useless teacher in front of the class. I remember fondly when I was in kindergarten, my mother was told by my teacher to put me on a "tranquilizer" because I liked to do cartwheels around the room. Wow a 5 yr old who won't sit still.

But it used to be if you went into a manic episode, you went into the hospital, and you spent time with the doctor. Now if you have anything that looks like a manic episode, you spend a few days in the hospital, and then get sent out the door with a whack of prescriptions, and maybe, just maybe they may even look at your history.

As a result of seeing my family members and relatives suffer, it moved me to the current position I have in studying medicine. That killer in the gym was clearly knowing what he was doing and was a genuinely evil man. Fortunately, he can not harm anyone ever again and I feel horrible for the families and relatives of those women who were killed. Another case is that of Jenelle Dorner, who had wrongly been given several psychotrophic drugs (very much like what happened to my cousin Derek) when she had suffered a bout of food poisoning. As a result, she also suffers from a movement disorder called dystonia.

She was given over 10 different drugs ranging from Zyprexa to Zoloft and the physical manifestations resulted in her metabolism shutting down; damage to her heart; liver damage. Another friend of mine, named Derek, even went as far as to have electro shock therapy and now he suffer from, amoung other things, chronic nerve damage disorders. And the original reason he went for "treatment" - all due to the fact he rarely talked much as a child. You need to learn there are victims of psychiatry.

You want my experience with those who are "mentally ill" - I can list several of them. My Uncle was a drug addict for years and as a result damaged his brain so severely, doctors labelled him wrongly as "mentally ill". (Truth was he was an addict and he suffered from actual brain damage) Second case is where my own niece was almost killed on her school grounds and for years couldn't get over the incident, but doctors labelled that as insanity.

A simple search can show you that mental illness preceded the development of medications. Speaking as someone who has studied both medicine and history extensively, I can make the accusation with fact there is proof to prove that mental illness is a concept that was invented by scientists as a method to explain the unexplainable. To this date, there hasn't been any consistent evidence that proves that mental illness do exist. What tests exist that suggest proof are conducted after test subjects have been medicated. There are numerous reports and documents that lend credence to it.

They now suffer from chronic health ailments that could have otherwise been entirely avoided.
