I should have said just a tiny tiny little bit too fast.
It may be the quality of the audio - hard to hear good separation - so the congestion of the audio may give the impression that it needs to go a little slower so it can breathe better and the listener can hear better inner details.
when I hear this ,I want to cry! Not only is it beautiful...Ravel wrote this for his buddies that died in the War{World war I..I believe he was an ambulence driver.
If you listen to orchestral versions you will find that it is this pace that best renders the implied harmonies and additional layers. I was startled to realize there WERE no oboes playing at first. A little less live a room would perhaps allow us to hear more detail. But I think it's a very very fine performance.
Nope, nothing wrong with the speed per Ravel's markings. "Put more feeling into it" is the standard critique by people who don't have the knowledge to give a more meaningful criticism of a performance.
You understand that the slower you play the more feeling you are actually able to place in a piece, right? So, I am saying that if he would go it a little slower, specifically in the middle-beginning, he could put the needed emphasis on the top hand and his bottom hand wouldn't be unnecessarily loud. The bottom hand is just the accompaniment and should be played more as such.
Nope, only the poorest of pianists thinks that playing with feeling is correlated with the speed of the piece and the fact that you think "slower playing - more feeling" shows that you probably aren't that skilled. This piece is meant to be played at a speedy pace. Also, if you wanted to say "emphasize the melody", say "emphasize the melody", not the empty "play with more feeling" nonsense.
Now we are getting aggressive when it's not really necessary. Great, you have your opinion towards this. I have shown you mine.
Now comes the point where you can be nice and say: "I disagree, because of this and that" Instead of: "You must be a bad piano player because of this and that, and you speak nonsense blah blah."
I could now say that you are a bad conversationalist because you have very aggressive and unnecessarily pretentious speech patterns.
If you have a comment to make on a person's performance, try and make a substantial one instead of an incorrect speed recommendation and a meaningless and empty "put more feeling". The worst thing on youtube are the people who troll these videos to post negative comments, without the knowledge to even make a proper complaint. Go build your self-esteem somewhere else.
A more valid reason for playing more slowly would be too allow the sound wave lengths of each hammered note to develop properly before proceeding to the next one. Moving quickly through this song is a good way to jumble all of Ravel's wonderful note and chord chices together.
There is a lot of notes in the piece and I think there is a tendency of a lot of pianists to not feel it through properly and simply play the piece as fast as possible so as to get done with it faster.
@Theowne It's the artist job to make the listeners feel as though there is actually feeling in his performance, not the listener's job. Following rigidly metronomic marking is just mechanical. Music isn't anything beyond a normal person's comprehension, we are all qualified to decide whether a piece of music is played well, and those who believe they comprehend music's beauty more than others are just snobbish. Musical taste differs between people, and it's the artist's job to satisfy them all.
You need to listen, instead of glean-- he's put tremendous feeling into it. Also, there may be a little bit of an adrenaline rush that has slightly altered his tempo, but it seems to me he's using it to create some interesting dynamics going into and out of various swells. I've studied this piece myself and am adapting it for guitar; this is my favorite piano performance so far. Not technically great perhaps, but certainly strong and individualistic. And more emotionally vivid than most.
Have tried with vain to find a Tombeau which was interpreted the way I like it. Great following of the melody. Great "points of arrival." So far the best I've found on You Tube. I've played it a number of times in orchestra, and could never imagine what the original piano would sound like. This really shows playing that I could not imagine. Lovely, it scratched my itch. Maybe a tad fast, but who cares.
beautiful prelude, a little rushed in parts that should be a bit slower, but good tempo in the other bits. great dynamics. wish i could find the perfect toccata on u2b, though, even the one by this guy isn't perfect.
Good job of dynamics and great at emphasising the significant "points of arrival." Uses several great techniques to bring out important cadences. I can hear the melody.
i love this song if only the tempo were slower the over all effect what be more soulful and wonderful

Certainly a gifted young man who plays Ravel well, I have enjoyed all of it. I cannot seem to find a biography to find more about this pianist.

It seems to be a very good performance, but the recording is not up to its level... It sounds as if they put a grand concerto in a tiny bedroom.

Maurice says pp. ~pianissimo~. That was a pretty ballsy pianissimo. But ... I'd play it the same way.

I don't know what all these people are bickering about... This piece is wonderfully played

It's either the sound of the video or the speed, but I'd like to hear the harmony better.

Good job, however I find your overall approach slightly too aggressive and the tempo a bit fast for my taste!

I think this is the standard tempo required, if not faster. I just think this version is a little "dry", not enough space for imagination.

lástima que el sonido de la grabación no es bueno, quizá eso impida escuchar este preludio más "aéreo". Pero es una buena versión
