I've had that same water breathing experience swimming in high school quite a few times. I had some very zen experiences where my body was swimming but "I" was somewhere else and when I started to come back I realized my rotational breathing pattern wasn't happening. I was looking straight down for extended periods of time and simply breathing. Kooky.
