I grew up listening to Slade,Mud,etc. My Uncle gave me a 1965 Hallmark UK Golden Country Hits album. This was on it.I liked it.Nice to hear one of the songs
on here, without crackles! This must be off a c.d .I played the album the other day.
Whoever RJB is; I totally agree with the last paragraph in the information section on this video.. Once in a while today's singers will come out with a pretty good one, but not very often. Maybe I'm just old (I'm over 65) but when I was growing up, it seemed like nearly all the country music was good, not all of them I liked, but most of it.
Carl Butler was the first person I ever saw on the Grand Ole Opry. He was singing Don't Let Me Cross Over. It was in '60 or '61. I fell in love with his singing and country music and have listened to nothing since.
got a 78rpm carl butler record.you cant insure a house of dreams andjust foolin around.on okeh records,radio station demo.exellent condition,for sale.any takers?????
I love the fact that the poster added at the end about greed and having no sense allowing country music to become what it is today, yes there are some true to the roots people and bands but for the most part it is horrible, Taylor Swift couldn't carry a note in a bag and why the hell is Kid Rock hosting all these country shows? The all mighty dollar. Thank goodness for Youtube and Timelife for keeping the best of country music alive.
It's funny, cause, "If teardrops were penies" (as the author pointed out), was written by butler for carl smith. It, however was such a smooth song. His (carl's) normal singing style was much more appalachian sounding (and you'd think his writing style would be too). He was a great singer and songwriter too. I know obutler was considered one of the most talented among many of the best! I like this song. really was bucking the nashville ways of the time (this more in the vein of bakersfield).
A true classic that is under-appreciated. I feel truly blessed for being exposed to it a number of years ago. Hard to find a recording of it. I was lucky enough to have recorded it off of an FM station a long time ago, and just found the cassette this morning. Thanks for posting this!
This is the quintesential Honky Tonk song. It was written by Tex Atchison, the great left handed fiddler. (He's worth a search on google-what a career!) Personally, I always liked Carl better solo than I did in his duets with Pearly although they had larger success as an duet act. Itsn't it a shame that he is not in the Country Music Hall of Fame? He virtually defined this style of music at the time and kept on with it when others sold out to rock and pop. Good on ya, Carl.
I love this song. I first heard it when I was on stage with an Irishman called Paddy O Brien, and I got his CD with it on. Lovely to hear it again by an original.
Country Music the way God intended it to be; Shuffle Style with twin fiddles and steel guitars and singers that could actually SING!!! How True!! "Somewhere between the greed for money and sound judgment, the legends of country music were tossed aside for the outlandish sound they call country music today." Music you could dance to, music you fell in love to and music that lasted longer than until the radio station got another record in to play. Thanks for posting this!!!!
This is True country music and you find it on XM radio...If got one and can hear it everyday on channel 13..its great to hear all the great ones from Hank Williams to Conway twitty and more.
When you compare this kind of music to the current junk that which is coming out of Nashville and on the "Not-So-Grand" Ole Opry, it would make Carl turn over in his grave.
THIS IS COUNTRY MUSIC!IT DOES NOT GET HERE BETTER THA N THIS!

Great record.
I heard Marty Stuart cite this as one of the great honky tonk songs of all time.
Someone should bring this song back. It would be perfect for Patty Loveless to do a female version.

They won't do it, because they will say it sounds "too country." But what is too country? Ask Bill Anderson.
