  • @RetroShinigami is the pandora touchscreen capable?is it possible to make voice calls or text messages on it.

  • this is pretty much just a linux laptop. nothing special.

  • @RetroShinigami COMINg THIS FALL .THE PENGUIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, THAT WOUld be funny

  • To all the people saying that a handheld running x86 would be ideal-

x86 is not perfect. Pretty much by it's nature it uses a ton more power, you'd be getting a battery life of about 2-3 hours tops. The Pandora runs for 10-14 hours while performing taxing tasks, like watching Hi-def videos or emulating the N64.

ARM is just a more power efficient architecture.

I agree that a handheld with x86 would kick ass, but it wouldn't be the perfect system.

  • @RetroShinigami What are you talking about?

  • what the hell! finalburn runs on this and i've been fighting with ancient builds and windows versions running like crap in wine on my laptop? where can i find a source file for this version?

  • Its not smaller than a CD xD

  • crazy thing

  • well but how exatly you boot up the games? you put them in the SD or you need a pc connection?

  • outdated the wiz is king now

  • I would have ordered one... but waiting 2 years for a console is like waiting 20 years for a car in Poland when there was communism :D Pandora is the new Dukem Nukem Forever....

  • @Bobkops The first 4000 Pandoras started shipping last week. The 2nd run of parts for 4000 more is already on order, funds are being gathered for the 3rd run.

  • @DrBeardo wow... after 2 years of waiting it was about time that they finish it... but H264 hardware acceleration etc. isn't even working till now. The hardware used in it is also already outdated...

  • @Bobkops The OMAP4440 isn't that much faster then the OMAP3530 in the Pandora, it still outclasses every other console out there, and most proposed devices using the latest Snapdragon or Tegra SoCs, so I don't see how it's outdated. The DSP has been able to handle these formats all along, it's just that the MPEG-LA refuse to license it for open source usage, thus it had to be reverse engineered.

Show me another device that has the features of the Pandora, because there isn't anything close.

  • @Bobkops As for it taking 2 years, you try setting up a project of the same scope with no starting cash, no complete knowledge of the engineering behind it, not knowing all the lawyerese required to not get sued, and not knowing Chinese when looking for fabricators that you can actually afford to pay.

Look into the reason it took so long, it's a community project, no professional company involved, just gamers, geeks and hackers hammering out something we have all thought about, but never done.

  • @Bobkops Let the team get some money to build the Pandora 2 !

  • The Pandora looks ugly and old! The render image of Pandora was much better, how they thought they would be develop it. But they made it worse!

  • @AimalCool Have you not seen the pics and videos of the final case? This video if of the beta version of the system, it didn't have to be perfect at this point as the only ones reciving the beta version where the core team and the most prominent GP2X/Wiz and Dingoo software porters and homebrew devs. I.E. The ones that had already proven that they could hit the ground running with the Pandora and get lots of software running, tested and tweaked for the release version.

  • I'm sceptical. Wouldn't you be better off with a powerful netbook running MAME or what ever emulator you prefer? Get a pint-sized controller for the USB port and you've got something you can play on the train, plane etc but which folds away neatly.

  • omg i want one :) Cortex + PowerVR ftw :D

  • Das Video ist ca. nen Jahr alt

  • lol smaller than a cd!

  • how can i get one of these?

  • @WilliSuperFlY In about 20 years, if they ever come out.

Jesus, can you imagine if you'd paid hundreds of $£s for one of these, been waiting like 3 years and still not got it?

Looks like the sickest thing ever. But seems like it's never going to be widely available and will be very difficult to use.

  • Sold as in pre-ordered. They're still tweaking the cases and getting ready for mass-production.

No, the PSP has worse graphics, unless the Go has made a huge improvement over the original.

It's hard to show off graphics in emulators, but the Pandora has nearly the same chips as the iPhone 3GS. Games that are written to take advantage of it, not emulated, will have loads of GPU power to tap.

  • @cyborgtroy Well I compare better graphiced psp games to be better than the iphone and n64 BY FAR. So if it's similar to the iphone 3gs GPU, it will fail.

  • @demon69120: The N64 isn't even involved. That's just the limit of emulation. Programs that actually use the GPU will be much better-looking.

  • The pandora should be able to emulate dreamcast games as well, from what I've read.

  • @zenvidar: They're working on Dreamcast, but I think it's still pretty slow at the moment, and I don't know how good the compatibility will be.

  • @demon69120 quake 3 is equal psp runs on all iphones, doom3 xbox version ID is considering porting to iphone 3gs because it is as powerful as an xbox 1.

psp is like one of the weakest handhelds still on the market these days.

Anyway pandora emulates dreamcast better than psp emulates n64

  • @bobbystar101 lol, so true XD

  • cant wait for mine :D

  • Wow, these guys have made progress. I hope they succeed. Not seen anything this exciting since the Spectrum. Go indi makers.

  • looks like a modded Nintendo DS

  • What? No Windows?

    PFFT.

    lol xD

  • n00b

  • If this spawns a new generation of Linux users then I'm all for it.

  • And you got one how?

  • They sold about 4000 units to exclusive buyers, (testers etc.)

  • I have a feeling the Olsen sisters will both be Grandmothers before this gizmo sees the light of day!

  • stfu dtfageet... what are you, like 12? what the hell would you know about when this is going to be released? and does your netbook have dual analog sticks and emulate dreamcast and ps1 games??

  • @fr33eat my netbook has more than 2 analog sticks and can emulate dreamcast, ps1 and ps2 games so stfu n00b!

  • right ok, if you say so. if you could post me a link to where you can buy one then maybe we can all save ourselves from wasting our money.

  • um im 13....and i know a little stuff about it.....i read some stuff about it at the pandora website.....you should go check it out unless you already have...

  • vaporware imo

  • its actualy really close to being realesed...but were all entitled to our opinions i geuss...

  • Very close indeed. Definitely before the Olympics.

  • make sure you get a suitcase for that yongjie, heard its gonna be HEAVY

  • dammit... WHY did you post this video. Now I MUST have one! :D I had almost made up my mind on the super cheap Dingoo.. well, Actually I'll probably still get the Dingoo and wait for the Pandora to come down a bit. but seriously.. ME WANTS! :)

  • Haha I almost went with the Dingoo, but the Pandora just stopped me in my tracks.

    ....ME WANTS! 2

  • @brandon9271 You're an idiot. You'll be waiting a long time.

  • Then I guess I'll wait a long time.. what's it to you, asshole?

  • @brandon9271 I'm working for trading standards and we're gonna shut down this bullshit. It's gone on for long enough.

  • @brandon9271 Then you'll have to wait a few years.

  • @handofstand someones going to come out with a x86 based portable and then stuff like Pandora will be dead before it ever has mass production.

  • @brandon9271 No, ha ha, that would be very unlikely.

Someone would more than likely come out with a SPARC-based portable computer because the Verilog code used by machines at a fabication foundry to actually manufacture the chips. It's design is open--after being released, in full, by Sun (before it was Oracle)--which means that people would know exactly how their operating systems and/or code would function on it.

  • @handofstand Intel already has prototype Atom based cell phones running Android. Supposed to be out this year BUT God knows when they'll actually come out.. if ever.

  • Can you..install windows xp or 98 on it?

  • why would you want to

You can almost certainly install linux on it.

No windows apart from CE supports arm processors

  • NO!

  • I like the psp better, but the problem with the psp is that you need to mod it to make it usefull for anything.

  • Yeah, that's the problem you'll have with basically any game console, they'll sell you hardware and then bitch and whine when you try to actually use it to its full potential.

  • iv pre-ordered mine!! cant wait!

  • give me one, give me one, give me one, give me one!!!!

  • Will this ..ever be...true commercial reality ? Too many voices.....

  • Yeah. It might take a while, though.

  • They're coming out in a few weeks, people have already preordered.

  • Woah.....so that's real. If the thing work I'll buy for sure one.

  • That was quick :O. Yeah they're going to be pretty cheap too. More information is on their website, openpandora :D.

  • Fast as a shark :-)..

Thanks, dude..gonna check this now :-)

  • Hehe yeah, I would have been but I had to go.

No problem, I'm definitely getting one haha. :P

  • @Topesio66 netbooks shit all over this dog shite

  • £266 is not pretty cheap IMO!

  • For what you get, I would say so :)

  • Nice point you have there.

  • @shneebleu certainly better than the psp go

  • @bobbystar101 how psp go has better graphics and a better shape and is better like this looks like a gameboy

  • @silverthornboy19 No lol psp it has far worse graphics shape controlls etc

  • It's not smaller than a CD >:(

  • Comment removed

  • Comment removed

  • but it is not much smaller..

  • Lol, I don't know how they came to that conclusion.

  • .. . MY GOD!!! just stay around in Youtube searching for more Pandora videos while waiting for the final mass !

  • There's a lot of videos, and I'll have to wait like all summer for the second batch..

I should be doing homework right now.

  • where can i find these people seriously someone reply to me

  • There's an email adress on the official site and you can order one from them

  • clearly you don't understand the point of the Pandora. And that's okay. So long as we can be civil about it.

  • where is this device?

  • would it be better to make a open source psp console so you could do al this on the psp but then more , it is possible to make such a psp is it?

  • no...

  • this thing can emulate dreamcast at 20fps already.. i knew it would like i said in the forums.. i hope it gets sped up alot and i might consider getting a pandora.

  • @FlyingPigger Pigs are flying.

  • sick! anopen source console, that's a great idea. I can see this thing going far!

  • What the heck is wrong with you people? You keep saying this is the stupidest piece of crap to ever exist but your WRONG. look at the PSP kockoffs and tell me if that's better than playing Super Nintendo, Playstation, Dreamcast and more where ever you go. So WHAT if it's old hardware, it fit's in your POCKET, and it's not made for the young generation who could care less.

So if you hate the Pandora so much than STOP GIVING US CRAP ABOUT IT AND LET US MOVE ON WITH OUR LIVES.

    Thank you.

  • It's shit it's shit it's shit! So shovel some more shit in that filthy mouth of yours and stalk talking shit.

  • The unit in the video is a prototype case with no keyboard or joysticks. It's for developers. Look at the official pandora website to see what the final product looks like. It's quite pretty.

  • stop, bashing the Open Pandora, It is a good console, until you make a superior console, you can't say shit

  • cuándo saldrá al mercado? es difícil de conseguir?

  • lo quiero...!

    T.T

  • im wondering, the pandora runs on linux right ?

so, can it play programs designed for linux ?

if so, it will be able to play the windows virtual box, wich will grant you acces to a LOT of other games(ofcourse not games like crysis, but it should be able to play unreal tournament(maybe 2003)

and a lot of other games that are at least 7 years old i think

  • virtualization - I don't think so. These things eat up a LOT of RAM.

OTOH running games under DOSBox or WINE should work just fine.

  • am writing code that would make a comp read a sd card as ram

  • Dosbox will work on openpandora cos its an x86 emulator it will work with most old true dos apps and maybe windows 3.1.

WINE will not work cos its not an emulator I.E Wine Is Not an Emulator!! its designed for x86 pcs runing linux not an arm processor witch you see in the pandora.

  • That will probably be able to run 9x as well but so slow that its not worth the effort.

  • @buckley0205 That's just plain stupid.

  • Virtualization requires the cpu to be the same. It won't work.

  • GO GIZMONDO!

  • NEWS JUST IN...

They're changing the name to Poondooma.

  • What games is this thing supposed to play?

  • It will have emulators for NES, SNES, and some other consoles up to about the N64 [If that]

and some titles designed for the Pandora itself.

I'm thinking Xmoto might be ported, but I don't really think there's a plan for it yet.

  • i also saw a psx emulator running ffVII very smothly so maybe it will run psp games even

  • hm... Technicly, it should it has 600 mh procesor (psp has 333)

  • You need, generally, at least 10 times the power of the original console to emulate it decently. Technically, the pandora has no chance in hell of emulating PSP.

  • aha.... kk It's stll very nice machine tho :P

  • This machine, like the GP2X, specializes in homebrew, open source apps, and emulation. I've already seen perfectly smooth PSX emulation, and it's gotten me rather excited. I wonder if it can emulate N64 as nice as that.

  • i bet i cud emulate the 64. And if not now, it will eventually. The psp can almost run super mario 64 full speed with sound, and its half as powerful. But No one ever thought that wud ever happen

  • True, but the best example of a system emulating another system is psp emulating the N64. The specs are only 3:1 psp=333mhz n64=93.75mhz. Its amazing how far the emulator has gotten. If psp can do that then the pandora cud "MAYBE" eventually slowly emulate the psp. Its possible, but u just gotta have people who are willing to acctually work on it.

  • Fine, but the PSP's daedalus emulator is the exception that proves the rule; it has the tightest dynamic recompiler of any emulator I've seen, plus an experienced and supremely talented dev at the helm. Plus, it's not the case that SM64 is fullspeed with sound - it averages out at around 15fps in levels, last I checked that was halfspeed with sound.

  • They're working on a PSP emu for Pandora already. Looks pretty promising. JayFoxRox knows what he's doing. Will probably result in playable 2d emulation, at least.

  • The people dissing it are failing to see the point of Pandora its for all the guys that want a portable console to run their emulated games pluss run the 3rd party stuff created for it. I will be using it to run NEO Geo and arcade games from the 90s and then see what else apears for it. I like the idea of gran turismo running on it. Dont compare it to the PSP that thing takes for ever to load and has no wher near as much computing power so the PSP can not run as many types of emulateed games.

  • I want to see it full 3D potential

  • While it technically has every other handheld beat in terms of raw power, it will never have extensive developer support. Better is a relative term, more powerful isn't.

  • That depends on what you mean.. There are thousands of extensive developers for this system that are ready willing and able to create better games than maybe all of the commercial developers out. And this system allows us to do that in a way that we couldn't previous to the company GamePark

  • It kind of is better considering it runs at about the same rate as a nintendo wii. overclocking it has 900 Mhz

  • ok....I am realy sry but my brother got into my youtube account and wrote that message. lol, I was wondering why people were writing things when i never went ON this vid. rofl XD

  • lol your brother is a troll.

  • rofl ur right!

  • It's better than any console on the market because it's made to be programmed, and that's what I want to do.

  • So why has it not been released yet... looks pretty much done to me. Especially for the home brew, Linux community it is being designed for. Whats the hold up?

  • not fake my freind has one

  • It's a Pandora, its not fake, look it up and read on it

  • sorry but i think he is right.

i looked every where and there are only photoshop pictures of it and youtube movies like this.

Their site has been down several times, Also people try to order it and their payment is rejected. I think they are fooling a lot of people at the moment.

I hope i'm wrong otherwise this is a very big scam.

  • haha, you guys are idiots, the pandora was created by trusted members of the GP2x community, dev boards have been sent out, and it is still in developement, which explains all the mockups

  • yes but the big order for the real thing is still not sent.

They wanna sent a couple of thousand units but they can handle that. I hope they will get it together. otherwise the whole thing fails.

  • The technology has changed a lot

  • the last 3d game...is it doom 1/2?

  • The linux looks really great and all but I wouldve really preferred them to integrate a nice fast mobile gpu - perhaps the Nvidia 9800m or if that wasnt possible maybe even the 9500M. Dont get me wrong the PowerVR is great but I dont think it will provide that 'Wow' factor to the console.

  • I don't see how a high-end, modern nVidia card could even remotely fit into the physical or electrical constraints of a pocket-sized console. If you want a 9800, get a laptop.

  • PowerVR is part of the SoC - System on a Chip. Nvidia's gpus are not. There was not an option for that. Plus the size and power requirements.

  • You sir are just plain idiotic. Your post was on another pandora video mentioning "shitux" as well. If you don't like it then why are you posting about it on more than one video regarding the pandora?

You obviously don't get the point of the device. It's meant to be a powerful handheld to replace some laptop/UMPC functions but still primarily remaining a homebrew enthusiasts handheld gaming device. It delivers on all those fronts.

  • No gu. I HAVE to use about 8 diff distros of Shitux for my 3rd year comp science. And even the top ones (ubuntu, mandriva, Pclinux OS, Sabayon, Puppy) will send you into "library dependancy hell" when you actually want to do something cool on it. Let alone some complete random distro on an ARM CPU

My point was simply to make the kids aware that they'll be paying out of their arses for the privilege of having to recompile a kernel just to play super fucking mario

  • > No gu. I HAVE to use about 8 diff distros

    > of Shitux for my 3rd year comp science. And

    > even the top ones (ubuntu, mandriva, Pclinux

    > OS, Sabayon, Puppy) will send you into

    > "library dependancy hell" when you actually

    > want to do something cool on it. Let alone

    > some complete random distro on an ARM CPU

    You fail compsci then, dummy.

I live and work in Silicon Valley. If you can't code Linux competently, you better change your major to business.

  • Or so you can browse the Internet or use it as a PDA.

Or listen to music or watch videos.

  • You sir are a fucktard. It runs psx is that 20 years old? tard. Also it runs Ubuntu is that 20 years old? Its just the begginning use your fucking brain, the console is not even released yet ofc it dosent run all it can handel before its released. MORON

  • > Trying to do a full Shitux distro on an ARM

    > CPU (what? so I can modify my JPGS on the

    > train? type an essay maybe?)

So you have a solid base OS underlying whatever project you want to put on top of it, idiot. What would you instead suggest? ucOS/II? eCos? VxWorks? Where do you get your TCP/IP stack from? USB stack? Good luck porting OpenGL to them.

Linux has a well defined and widely understood interface, that's why it's the solution of choice.

  • Is there an emu for Pandora? I want to start programming for it, I think I'm going to get one and I want to do some stuff with it.

  • why would you want an emulator for pandora, when pandora essentially just is a big emulator?

  • .....

    *dumbstruck*

because...if he had an emulator he could start coding for it and creating games/applications and have a test environment (the emulator) to test his code.

That would mean he could be halfway into making a (or completed it) by the time it comes out and he could distribute it among his friends that own pandoras

  • Yeah, I checked the forums and there isn't an emu yet, but I might start looking into OpenGL ES and cross-compiling. I'm hoping I can write some PDA-type software and eventually use a Pandora to replace my current closed-source PDA.

  • you don't need to use an emu, you can just dev for any generic linux device. Why would you need an emu? OpenGL ES is the only thing I can think of that makes this different than a standard Linux computer for development, unless you're going to the hardware level, which I assume most people aren't.

  • An emulator for an emulator?! What kind of world do we live in?!?

  • Well it doesn't emulate x86 as far as I've h-

    Wait, you're joking, aren't you? :/

  • does anyone know if you'll be able to emulate if you don't have linux.

  • lets hope it does well and the price drops in a few months time

  • I expect the price to be lower when the second batch comes out.

  • use your 'nogin, it runs linux... linux doesn't just run "shit games" by themselves

  • You can play whatever you or someone else is able to make. It's linux, it's open source, don't judge it because you don't know these facts.

  • The people that ordered this, know this. What's your point, troll?

    Move along

  • Troll along

  • can u play n64 or gba games on it?

  • gba yes n64 doubtful

  • far from true.

  • i looked it up, there is a chance it will be able to run consoles as powerful as an n64 but they're still uncertain.

  • i would spend 329.29$ on this cool neat handheld, but i dont, and probably never will(unless i win the lottery or save up a years worth of money) have enough money. since its so expensive, it wont be very popular. still pretty cool looking though, but ill stick to a psp 3000 for chrismas.

  • Not popular? It sold out its first batch. And it isn't even out.

    Move along.

  • what is song name?

  • To make this work well they should

    1.Post Tutorials for it

    2. PERFECT DARK AND 007 goldeneye

    3. Use WIFI 2 make stuff like Donkey K multiplayer online

    4. another face colour ( not straight away)
