From a Father to his daughters ....from a daughter to a father, sons and mothers we will miss...We ALL grieve. We are stronger now but it never goes away. Shall we never forget those we have lost! I love you all. Please watch this .. :)
I'll never forget. I was at work, teaching HS. The PA system came on to the radio, & then the principal told usto head to the SS wing where the TVs were so we could watch, all classes were cancelled, the whole area was under lock down. We were afraid we were at war, with the base & the power plant right there, we figured we would be the next target. It was so horrible. All of us telling each other that we loved each other - afraid we were saying goodbye forever ...
I have known this artist since Phil Collins and Genesis were together. He has some awesome songs. I will admit some of his stuff is not my cup of tea, but the stuff I like from him is pretty powerful.
This is the most touching song about grief I have ever heard. Peter's lyrics always seem to be able reach in and directly touch the heart.. Right to the thing that most can relate to, I think. I know most associate this tune with what happened on 9/11. But, I think that maybe it could also help the folks who lost loved ones in the devastating Alabama tornados last month. My heart goes out to them. God Bless all who read this.
Probably the most touching song about grief that I have heard. Peter's lyrics always seem to hit home with me. What a great writer!
I just ran across this song for the first time in a good while. I know many justly associate this song with what happened on 9/11.
But I have thought that maybe it could also help those who have lost loved ones in the horrible tornados that tore through Alabama last month. My heart goes out to them. I live in AL and have met some who were affected. Terrible situati
that is really astonishishing that a few people with instruments can reach down in to the depths of dispair then bring you back up in a couple of minutes great great song
Peter and Angie Aparo are two masters of music... that are underrated.. we are the ones to blame... we pay attention to nasty shits... while we have things like this..... this is just beautiful... somedays i spend singin this.. with no grief feelings... but i do it just for the beauty of the song....
My best friend was killed in an accident over 10 years ago. I'd play this song over and over, it was the only thing that helped me when i felt swallowed up by world that had become too big and dark. i miss him!
i always thought this song about his father?? not 9/11. doesnt everyone know about the truth of 9/11? our own govt and c.i.a. planted bombs inside the trade centers and building # 7,along with the taliband!! and the plane that hit the pentagon-was a boeing missle plan(us air force) with a missle on the bottom of plane!!(the plan had no windows) if no one believes me-google: inside job-9/11!!!!!!! sorry for the truth...i know it hurts!!
i liked peter before this, but i am shocked that he bought this 911 bullshit .hmm he is a humans rights activist? Why not write a few songs to honer all thoose 100000s innocent civilians who has been murdered and lifes torn apart, so america can steal more land and oill, oh yeah god bless the United Hate of a America.
Anyone who has heard Peter Gabriel's music, knows that everything he sings/writes and sings has always been so very heartfelt. Even when he was in Genisis with Phil Colins...that is yet another musician who is rarely credited in the Music Industry. But Peter Gabriel has always been one of my favorites when it comes to emotions coming across through music. This is one of his best.
My WHOLE family died over 3 years. It expresses how I felt & sometimes still do. Like birthdays & Christmas. You still grieve for those you love. It never goes away. You just put it away in a drawer so you can go on. Sometimes you have open that drawer because you miss them so much and those memories are all you have. The only way you can be with them again for a little while. Memories are sweet, but a price is paid for visiting them-because when you put them back away you grieve all over again.
@Vengenceisviper Bless your heart. I have lost both parents, and you are right, it never ever goes away. We have to just go through the motions & put one foot in front of the other. I dream of Home & both parents almost every night. I had to move away because it was too hard to live there without them.
there is so much talk about 9/11 every year on this day and so many remembrances and yet it all seems to be so predictable and almost ritual-like at this point that I just seem to tune it all out. Then I thought to watch this video and it seems so heartfelt and brings back all the memories from that day in a powerful way. I know he didn't write it about 9/11 but it is associated with that day for me.
I rediscovered this song after the recent death of my mother. I have cried so much: for her, our past, my sisters, mu children and a future that she will never see and we will not share. Oh it hurts.
When he sings ‘it is so hard to move one…life goes on’ he speaks to a higher place. As the poet Philip Larkin discovered on a tomb in Arundel, England "What will survive of us is love".
This song helps. Life does go on. Cherish every moment.
My 81 year old father is dying of terminal cancer, death is days away. I heard this while travelling on a long a haul flight last week.... so profound, so sincere, so beautiful.... I cried. His last I grieve, a howl, is how I felt.
Peter, Mr Gabriel, you brought me some peace this weekend. Thank you. I've been a fan for decades, but this is your very best.
Gabriel's concluding couplet "Did I dream this belief, or did I believe this dream" is such a wonderfully purposeful and universally echoing question that each need to ask ourselves. A contemplative thought at the end of a song wrought with emotion.
Amazing! I had never seen this Larry King video. I also didn't know the song was about 911. I saw him at Staples Center in LA for the Up Tour. So good!

You're giving me goosebumps again Peter! Beautiful voice. Still my favourite artist. By the way if anyone likes this track, you'll find it on the soundtrack for the Nic Cage / Meg Ryan movie "City of Angels".
so different to the sound of his voice in the 70's with Genesis. he went from having a pretty high pitched voice, to a pretty deep voice. You'd think it was two different people.
I can never hear this song without a lump in my throat; Peter Gabriel is one of the finest musicians we have. He is a true man of conscience as well, a man of peace and forgiveness. Check out his human rights work. He is a mensch.
My son and I made it through the terror, the tragedy, but not the trauma of the WTC, so we moved to a sweet little town in NNY where Zachary 20 was killed by a drunk driver in 08...
He's never believed in doing whatever it takes to get on TV. If he did this for LKL he really believed in what he was doing, which makes it worth all that much more. Gabriel doesn't do publicity stunts. Definitely a great moment you captured mjdeere.
I can't believe how well this sounds for being a live recording that was broadcast on Larry King. Sounds just like the CD. That's a lot of sound for how few people are performing.

what a increadble musician and song! my girlfriend of ten years dumped me and this really hits home. its so hard to move on,loving someone thats gone!
Thanks for posting this video and song. My dad dies in 1996...this song and Puff Daddy's "missing you" both epitomize how I feel when I think of my father.
e to i feel exactly the same as u ouff dadys i chose puff daddys i'll be missin u for my dads funeral coz it sums up everythingboth these songs do puff daddy is i'll miss miss u and this is sayin life goes on even tho u dont want it to :(
My little brother was in the USA, his flight was cancelled, told me his life was blessed but knew he escaped. He died on 9.11 2007 in scotland, so sad:(
Good Peter left Genesis so Phil Collins could make Genesis the brilliant band they are, and good Peter left, so he could develop his own talent and solocareer. No question of his talent. Genius..... "so hard to move on - still loving what´s gone" gotta love it
I love the dark nature of the first part of the song, and how it transitions into this life affirming upbeat nature, and ends with "now I can find relief..."
What a perfect song about the journey through grieving processes...
nearing the anniversary of 9/11 this song remains as a great tribute to ALL who have lost someone or something soo very dear. "I greive for you". So hard to move on, still lovin what's gone......
PETER GABRIEL Sings with the voice of the love and sorrow. His music is the transcendence of the soul. His words are beauty and pain all in the same. Thank you Peter for the gift of your beautiful music
Love this song- I am glad that Peter recorded again for the "Up" album- it was way too good simply to be a soundtrack item (City Of Angels-1997). As for the aging- happens to all of us. Without the wizard beard and a black toupee I suppose he could still look like he was in his forties, but why? Life carries on....
Essence, depth, intelligence. A rare mix you don't find in most of today's musicians and the corporations running the music industry for the simplistic youth of today. Gabriel is a master or emotion in his music. Just great.
Shame on you readynow12345, Peter Gabriel is 60 and beautiful. His music is genius. I have been a fan since Genesis. He was the originator of Alternitave Rock, and launched the socially conscious music that has been missing since the 60's. All of the Grunge Sound and New Metal is based on his work.
"BOY" - readynow12345, "it sucks" to be immature and shallow even worse. Let's see a picture of you when YOU hit 60; and furthermore I bet you WISH you were as "POOR" as Peter. His talent, actions, and beauty-of-mind has taken him farther than you could even fantasize. How many thumbs-down are you striving for, anyway? I won't do that because I want others to see your childish comment.
'Mahalo' to 'OXMUSTUBE' (!) for directing me to this; wish i'd have seen it right after 9/11...would've helped...in fact, i defy anyone to listen to it and remain dry-eyed!...but those tears shed are 'worth shedding', because it's so cathartic...
Am currently mourning the loss of my most beloved pet (of nearly 20 years...longer than most marriages!!) so this sort of 'music therapy' most definitely helps....the missing hurts so very much, but indeed - 'Life carries on'...as indeed it must.
to EveKauai - my condolences on the loss of your beloved pet. i found this thru a grief site as myself had lost my soulmate of 30 years; a long and precious marriage. music like this has been my saving grace. i wish you peace!

PG is one of the few artists that make me really stop and think. even through great rifs and beats he has something very sincere to say most of the time. here comes the flood is really one of the most emotional songs written imo.
I keep watching this every few weeks, its so beautiful and heart wrenching, its funny but we choose how to suffer and remember that day in so many different ways. It makes me mad at Bush for taking his eye off the target sorry to get political
every time i hear this song i cry like a baby and i cant help it...especially since my girlfriend left me 6 months ago i still think of her so much :(
One of the few voices in rock that can always give one chills. His music is a joy for all to hear.I never thought of the 9/11 ramifications of this song but it hits home.
As much as I love this song, I never quite trusted it. I always thought he was too complex and dramatic to express a concept so directly. Still gives me chills though.
From a Father to his daughters ....from a daughter to a father, sons and mothers we will miss...We ALL grieve. We are stronger now but it never goes away. Shall we never forget those we have lost! I love you all. Please watch this .. :)

Thanks for posting this video and song. My dad dies in 1996...this song and Puff Daddy's "missing you" both epitomize how I feel when I think of my father.

This song reminds me of my father, too.
He died when I was 19 years old and he was 85. But I still was in shock when he passed away.
Now I miss him with a smile on my face!!!
Life carries on and on!!!
Because, no matter what, he´ll stay with me forever and ever!!!

Peter Gabriel's Don't give up did the same for me back in 1989. His art goes deep in the soul of the ones who truly listen.

Good Peter left Genesis so Phil Collins could make Genesis the brilliant band they are, and good Peter left, so he could develop his own talent and solocareer. No question of his talent. Genius..... "so hard to move on - still loving what´s gone" gotta love it
rambojohn123 3 years ago
I love the dark nature of the first part of the song, and how it transitions into this life affirming upbeat nature, and ends with "now I can find relief..."
What a perfect song about the journey through grieving processes...

PETER GABRIEL Sings with the voice of the love and sorrow. His music is the transcendence of the soul. His words are beauty and pain all in the same. Thank you Peter for the gift of your beautiful music
idontlikehos 3 years ago 5

All of the Grunge Sound and New Metal is based on his work.
manturian 3 years ago
Boy it sucks to get older, Poor peter didn't age well.
readynow12345 3 years ago
Maybe physically, but his voice is just as good as it was during the Genesis days.
ramiritoredux 3 years ago 3
boy, you just missed the point didn't you. (rolls eyes)
dmichelleh 3 years ago

Am currently mourning the loss of my most beloved pet (of nearly 20 years...longer than most marriages!!) so this sort of 'music therapy' most definitely helps....the missing hurts so very much, but indeed - 'Life carries on'...as indeed it must.
;)

to EveKauai - my condolences on the loss of your beloved pet. i found this thru a grief site as myself had lost my soulmate of 30 years; a long and precious marriage. music like this has been my saving grace. i wish you peace!

Thank you Peter Gabriel...I lost my brother (age 44, massive heart attack). This song says it all. I grieve...

He looks much different than he did in 1986 when he did Sledgehammer .. assuming this is the same guy from Genesis, right? :D
theultimatekoopa2 3 years ago
Correct!
...and there are 16 years between 86 and 02, so that would explain the looking 'much different'...

PG is one of the few artists that make me really stop and think. even through great rifs and beats he has something very sincere to say most of the time. here comes the flood is really one of the most emotional songs written imo.

Peter Gabriel is my favorite artist precisely because of this. His songs are so multi-faceted.

One of the few voices in rock that can always give one chills. His music is a joy for all to hear.I never thought of the 9/11 ramifications of this song but it hits home.
godsofmagog 3 years ago
As much as I love this song, I never quite trusted it. I always thought he was too complex and dramatic to express a concept so directly. Still gives me chills though.
