  • Happy Birthday Rory, R.I.P.

  • ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

  • Man, I love this tune!!!!

  • What a great performance...Rory knew how..noone like him

  • you got it. especially Jeff Beck, Have you checked out Desiree Bassett. The young lady can play!

  • ac/dc ain' got shit on RORY!!!

  • @johnhrey52 AC DC AIN"T got NOTHING on me. The guy is so easy to copy and follow it isn't funny. ACDC is a sound. Thats all. For those with too much drugs in their veins or a hatred for God. THIS man is a REAL guitar player. Much like a fellow countryman named Gary Moore. Deep Purple, Led Zepplin, Hendrix Rainbow(Blackmore again), Jeff Beck etc. All real. ACDC, just a lot of loud music with the EXACT same bass/ drum lines in ALMOST every popular song they ever performed. ACDC SUCKS EGGS!

  • @ghfakar Hey, it is ok to not like things you know, just don;t be a dick about the things you don't like. People have differing tastes and that is what music comes down to. There is no "best musician" or "best band". Grow up and expand your horizons, it does you good.

  • Completely Awesome . after watching this i can say music sucks now especially compared to Rory Gallagher . Could you imagine him in his prime performing now .

  • @TheBeaver50

I'm glad there are still some folks that still remember great guitarist! Check out this young lady named Desiree Bassett. She's the real deal man!

  • yeah

    .l..l><l..l

  • is that steve-o on bass

  • @thedancingclairs Bass player is Gerry McAvoy.

  • Spinal tap were his support on this gig -the famous jazz /blues festival gig ....well blues jazz really.

  • @TheMichaelseymour i bet his ampfliefiers where set to 11!

  • Prince of the Air

  • Rory at his best. I miss you dear friend.

  • Rory Gallagher, what can he be described as?... A God?, quite possibly - Boss of the blues?, yes for sure! - Guitarist numero uno?, definitely had had a flair for it! - whatever our different views, he was/is certainly held-up amongst the highest of them all, be they Hendrix/Page/Blackmore & his memory will live on for eternity

  • Damn

  • Ooohhhh.I like it.!!!!!!!

  • einer der besten gitarrenspieler überhaupt. eine fantastische blues-stimme dazu. mehr braucht man über diesen wunderbaren musiker nicht zu sagen.

  • Sort the fucking EQ out noise boy

  • Loved the man !!! saw him so many times I can't count them..always delivered the best music..re stringing as he played an all RIP mate, I'll have one for you tonight.

  • Thrash metal?

  • I love this tune Im about to learn it on the guitar!!!!

  • if i didn't know better,i'd say he'd give you the strat off his back but don't touch his beer.

  • Oh, Rory, I love you! I wish I were born some 30 or 40 years earlier in Ireland! Then I would met Rory and marry him and have some talented children!! :(( Even if he refused to marry me or anything else... I would rape him and have a child >_> a talented one >_>

  • @TheVelvetBride No way, If that would be the case He'd be mine!

  • i saw him in bielefeld-west germany 1970 ----great r i p

  • Saw Rory open for Nazareth and Deep Purple in Atlanta in the seventies. Guess who blew both headliners totally away? He and the drummer did a harmonica drum jam for fifteen minutes to thirty thousand people.

  • this lives the music that we can see !

  • Why isn't that on the montreux dvd??????

  • ....with apologies to Roy Buchannon, Billy Gibbons, JDW, Duane, Jimi, M. Bloomfield, etc., etc...Rory was the best blues rock guitarist of all time. Charisma, soul, chops, songwriting..he was the best. I'm glad i had to chance to see him once ( mid 80's the Bayou Wash. DC ) before he left us.

  • Master class...\m/

  • This is the first video I ever watched of Rory and I became an instant fan and I still am 3 years later. It brings joy to my heart to watch this video.

  • love the version on stage struck amazing

  • I used to think zz were the power rock kings, but just listen to this Rory. Power to thin King, My friend and yours Rory Gallagher.

  • Not for the money. Not for the glory. He didn't care bout all that crap. He was out for the truth!

  • Why is't that one on the Montreux double DVD??????? what a shame

  • Rory is buried in Ballincollig ....... He did not die ..... just his body needed a rest as his spirit kept going on tour on the internet here ....... Who will be at his graveside in your life time to pay your respect to someone who gave us all we ever needed in the words and sounds of the blues of a white boy post blues explosion ....

  • @patrixo127 true words ,man!!saw him in concert twice no musician could make you feel the way he could,he was and is the best.

  • 1000000 years til someone like him gets around!

  • Zitat von Roger Glover: "Mit seiner zerschundenen Stratocaster sagte er der Welt alles, was er zu sagen hatte. "

With his bloody Starocaster he told the world all, what he had to say !!

I think so too. R.I.P. my irish buddy

  • RIP, Rory, 15 years without your talent in this world full of music mercenaries

  • @rockerlawyer

Spot On! It'll probably take another 1000 years before someone like Mr Gallagher comes gain!

  • june 14 - Rory you will ALWAYS ABSOLUTELY BE THE BEST to me - I hope you have found the peace you never found here.

  • brilliant brilliant brilliant

  • I saw Rory back in 76 and he opened for Aerosmith. Unlike most of the crowd I was there to see Rory. One of the most amazing concerts I every saw. He played a number of songs from Against the Grain. He completely blew Aerosmith off the stage. Most of the people there didn't know Rory and they never knew what hit 'em. Simply one of the best guitarist ever.

  • An Icon

  • my junior year in high school......72/73? saw him at the LA Forum opening for Rod Stewart & the Faces (with Tetsu on bass). DESTROYED ROD STEWART. we were in shock......amazing show.

  • My God, what a performance. Incredible. Wonder why these 2 songs were not included on the `06 released Live at Montreux DVD (`79 performance)?

  • This was at a jazz festival? Hmmm. Sounds more like plain old KICK-ASS ROCK N' ROLL to me.

  • He is best ever! No one can be so close to the audience as he was, no one can feel guitar as he was. Listen and watch him and enjoy.

  • Straight from the gut!

    No bullshit!

    No lies!

    Real music!

  • @Xaffax

    Right!

  • I've Just started reading the Biography by Jean Noel Coghe, apart from some Glaring mistakes about life in sixties Britain, it's got me hooked.

  • The Good die young, No make that the Great die young

  • Make that, "The Good and the Great die young"

RIP Rory, see ya soon mate, need some lessons.

  • Fantastic!!!

    Grandma mary

  • How underrated is this guy?

  • He's not underrated really, just under appreciated.

His time will come, long after his demise.

I never saw him live, one of life's regrets!

  • @MITCHWILD You said it right, i also never had the chance to see him, but im sure he will live forever!

  • anyone who knows the bassist?

  • Absolutely. His name is Gerry McAvoy and he was Rory's bassist for 20 years. Funny thing is, according to the book Gerry wrote (Riding Shotgun), Rory never officially asked him to join the band!

  • @rorrance thanks a lot

  • cheers for that bit of Rory trivia , must get my hands on a copy of Gerry's book & find out a bit more of the history behind "Taste" & Rory

  • Ta! I highly recommend Gerry's book!! It really gives a true inside look into what it was to work so closely with Rory (hard to get much closer, actually).Just a head's up tho...Gerry did not work with Rory until Rory had disbanded Taste and was preparing to go out on his own, so there isn't all that much info re:Taste. Still, one heck of a read for any fan of Rory's music!

  • Gerry McAvoy.spelling may be wrong.

  • the irish SRV!!

  • I love his energy and honesty ,all left on stage for the fans!!!

  • Great stuff. Don't you just want to be there.

  • If you are ever in Japan go to Yoyogi park on a Sunday. Last time i was there, Groover Beans, Midnight Pumpkin, Scandal, Pink Panda. Did not particularly like the music but could not keep the smile off my face best atmosphere ever. Went to see Peter Green a couple of weeks ago in Bilston, enjoyable enough but always that sense of watching somebody going through the motions

  • Thanks for the responses. Its important to understand i am not talking about the music. Rory was the best musician i ever saw (eleven times). I am talking about the exitement that would begin on the morning of the gig, about his enthusiasm and energy and his closeness to the crowd, about his complete lack of pretence. these qualities are hard to find these days. BUT i have seen bands from asia who, like Rory seem to actually want to be on stage, Whatever your tastes it should be fun.

  • This may seem like a ridiculous comparison but in my humble opinion the only person who attacks a song like Rory is Naoko of Shonen Knife. Same sheer enjoyment, same conectivity to the crowd. She is 50 years old this year and still tours the world bringing joy. she is however Japanese so dont look for any blues, just wonderful non stop rock plus a song about killing a spider on her balcony.

  • @ggrahamm17 yes its ridiculous.lets leave it at that.

  • yep, a ridiculous comparison indeed :D

  • The only good thing about being 56 years old is that i was able to see Rory 11 times. He was a really hard working musician and toured the UK regularly and once told me he just loved being on stage. I have seen hundreds of bands in my life, Floyd, Stones etc none of them come close to Rory. The energy and sheer brilliance of the man could lift you for days. modest, unassuming and very sadly missed. \thank God for U tube

  • This should be required viewing for anyone that wants to play Rock and Roll,Rory the best live guitarist that ever Rocked .! R.I.P. Strat King

  • you wanna see this guy on air guitar..... he's fuppin' deadly!!

  • This video captures exactly how good rory was in concert. Every concert i ever went to he had this energy from the moment in walked on stage. Nobody has the stage presence of rory. Also his song writing , the crime fiction slant broke free of the blues stereotype songs of Johnny winters etc.. Rory's bands were tight! The quality of sound he got is staggering when you remember your watching a video of a live gig. You have to search very hard to find other bands that captured as good a tone.

  • Your comments are so correct in every way.

  • So here he is, completely dehydrated from a long set, and yet he just keeps bringing it on! Yikes. He blams out two of his strongest pieces, as though he were just beginning the set. Unbelievable. And perfect.

  • Like a Nascar driver, right on the edge. What excitment! Great vid.

  • Miss you so much Rory ! Make me believe humanity hide treasures... Hope !

  • Can you imagine someone like him on American Idol? lol lol lol blow em away.

  • @budway1942 the sad thing is they'd probably reject him cos they cant handle how amazing he is

  • @budway1942 I saw him first playing with "Taste" (a completely unknown band so far) in Heidelberg as opening act for John Mayall in the early seventies. He turned the "Stadthalle" upside down. After some encores Mayall started to play - and got yelled and booed off the stage! Mayall did something extraordinary and great: he called "The Taste" back to the stage and after some more songs Gallagher left the arena for Mayall again who started over as if nothing happened. CHAPEAU for both of them!

  • @VelezBlanco John Mayall was and is a classy guy. He was not alone in being the unfortunate musician who played a gig only after Rory had taken their energy and made believer's out of them. A tough act to follow, as they say.

  • @budway1942 im sure he'd have Steven Tyler's vote

  • @budway1942 Real musicians on American Idol??NAAAAh

  • @budway1942 Real musicians on American Idol??NAAAAh

  • @budway1942 if somone like Rory was on there, i'd probably watch the show

  • yeahhhhhhh, this is rock , really grave !!!!!!!!!!!

  • always loved the way he got close to the fans....great guy....just how you'd like rock/blues icons to be.You knew he couldnt wait to encore and really let rip and enjoy himself.

  • just the best...

    always the greatest...

  • Oh man, could feel the hairs standing on the back of my neck when they burst into Wayward Child. Awesome stuff. Thanks NCOpagan.

  • Oh yea ! Lovin' this. Timke to buy some albums me thinks.

  • And then there's Gerry McAvoy, one of the finest bass players in rock....but he never got the fame he deserved.

  • Damn! One of the Most Rocking songs I've ever heard!

  • This riff is f****** bad a**

  • "RORY" MON "alter ego"POUR TOUJOURS!!!!!!

  • P.S. And once again, I ask: Why the Hell is this not on the DVD? Damn.

  • Again and again... I watch this and I am undone... Rory is simply unbelievable.

There he goes, doin' that shit that only he can do.

YIKES! I truly wish I had been there.

  • elmatador.....i meant to hit the thumbs up there, sorry hit the wrong side.i agree man.

  • P.S. No offense meant.

  • If your top 10 doesn't have Rory in it, then your top 10 doesn't have anything!

  • not only a fantastic guitarist but a real down to earth guy, I met him once, he gave me and my freind a lift home in the tour bus after a gig at the colston hall in bristol in 1977, R.I.P rory, sadly missed

  • Growing up as a teen in the late 70s was all Van halen for my friends and i as far as guitarists but in about 85-86 i got the irish tour cassete from of those get 10 for a penny things..lol anyways that day changed my musical tastes as far as guitarists rory made me realise how repedetive eddie was and how diverse otehrs were "like rory who is now my all time fave followed by sonny landreth" ok im done..:)

  • amen.....

  • the greatest guitar player of all time !!!

  • If you haven't got this in your playlist, you're probably dead.

    Oh well. enjoy it. Superb.

  • There will NEVER be another Rory! God love him and may he RIP!

  • He makes everything look effortless.its a little silly to say but 1 of his songs seem to have 5 songs in them. his licks come out of nowhere and more than 1 thing happens at the same time.he sounds like 5 guitarist. thanx for this man

  • Rory's the best, but don't forget that killer rythym section, best thing since skynyrd.

  • true that, rory is out of this world and probably the most underrated player in the world ever. but his rythm are awesome and even more overlooked than he is.. fair fucks to all of them for showing the world that ireland has some top class musicians

  • Hay man, check out "Back Door Slam" another great Irish Blues Band. They are from the Isle of Man. Keeping the Blues alive baby.

    RIP Rory

  • Back Door Slam are excellent - check out Simon McBride also (Northern Irish)

but no-one comes close to Rory G.

First saw him in 1972, and then many many times and even shared a guiness with the great man on St.Paddys Night

at the Greyhound- always brilliant .

    RIP RORY

  • Davy Knowles is certainly superb. He is truly an heir to the throne of Hendrix and Gallagher.

Although, I must say, the Isle of Man is not in any way Ireland. It is certainly in the Irish Sea, but it's part of the United Kingdom.

    Hey, just sayin'.

  • Isle of man has it own Parliment and is neither UK or Irish.

  • Umm. O.K. Let's agree to disagree. My statement was somewhat incorrect. Here's what the official country site says:

    Self-governing British Crown

    Dependency with its own government

and laws. The Island is not part of

the United Kingdom and has no representation in the British Parliament.

    The British Crown is ultimately

    responsible for the Islands external

relations. Head of State: Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, "Lord of Mann."

  • Great vid, thanks. Love Roarin' Rory!

  • The JONAS BROTHERS best material is still worse than Rory Gallaghers worst material.

  • Cognitivemagic: I don't agree, Rory didn't have "Worse" material! There is absolutely nothing to throw away from his music;

    Cheers

  • I didn't mean that there was anything "throwaway" about Rory's music.

I was simply trying to draw contrasts to make a point.

So, I agree with you. But, for me, there are songs that resonate more with me. I happen to love all his songs, but not all equally :-)

  • And, another thing to think about for those of you who are in Europe or Japan: this encore is not part of the commercial Montreux DVD. Why? I don't know! It's Rory at his best before an audience. Absolutely fabulous.

  • No matter how many times I view this, I remain astonished. Not only was Rory in complete command of the Strat, he was in complete command of his audience. Lawdy! His absence is keenly felt. Wish I had seen him live.

  • Awesome // now he's Upstairs..teaching Jesus the Blues

  • Seen RG playing a charity gig at the borderline in london to 50 people - mostly acoustic the best gig !!!!!!!!!!!

  • that sounds incredibly funny coming from a (cough) JONAS BROTHERS fan (cough).

fans of that disney corporate wannabe crap like the Jonases and Hannah Montana and all that other shit have no right whatsoever to insult real musicians like rory!

  • one of the best guitarist of all times ! rip rory...we miss you so...

  • rory owned that 61 strat..he plays it with grace and ellegance.R.I.P

  • Him and Jimmy are jamming away together up in heaven, god bless his soul.

  • Classic/Perfect example for a power-trio with a wall of sound!!

    Thanks for posting!

  • I was lucky enough to see Rory Gallagher in Germany in 1980 and Indianapolis in 1981 !! Rest in Peace Bro' cuz you rocked hard while you was alive !!!PEACE JIM

  • Oh. Rory is the very best. It's difficult to describe him, the words don't do him justice. We should all be at his feet, at his feet.

  • you are so right!

  • Ah, Rory. RIP. Wish there were some way to go back in time and enjoy him live. He is the best.

  • wish they put this on the dvd

  • I do too. It's funny, because the cover art on the DVD is of this performance.

  • yeah they shud put some of his songs on guitar hero,it wud get more people worldwide more aware of his music especially younger people

  • Those were the days my friend!! True Rockin' Boys....with long hair! Rory you Rock!! Saw you live once '74/'76. So many GREAT players then!! I love the 70's! Q

  • wish i lived then :(.........u lucky person, im only 15,Rory u rock!

  • me too

  • I have permanent smile on my face when looking at this and at the same time I think that there must be fly in my eye.

  • Nunca pude verte en vivo, pero fuiste y eres un grande alli donde estes, que sigas derramando tu musica inolvidable.

  • Beer drinking music !

  • I'LL have a coopers Stout thanks

  • A round of Guinness!Cheers!

  • He does sound a lot like Chris Stuckey from Shin kicker.

  • Really don't you think it is the other way around?

  • Of course, lol, I was joking.

  • Rory was always "cooking" in his gigs but during this particular gig he was peaking.

So a question for his brother Donal Gallagher:

When are you going to release the entire gig on DVD?

  • Rory was an all around player, lead, slide rythum and great vocals and song writing to boot.

    UP Rory

  • jimi was once asked, "whats it like being the worlds greatest guitar player ?" he replied "i wouldn't know, go ask rory gallagher"

  • thats a myth... sry dude

  • thats a pity, still like the idea though

  • it's actually true. i remember reading that interview with Jimi Hendrix. Can't remember where, though...

  • In a dream?

Cos he didn't say it about Rory.

Santacruezz, whose videos of Gallagher you have probably browsed already set the record straight - it was Phil Keaggy that Hendrix was talking about.

I don't know where this bollocks that it was Gallagher came from and I don't much care for it - just enjoy Rory's fantastic music, fantastic guitar playing and fantastic songs.

That's what makes him an all time great, not some cock and bull hendrix quote...

  • thats actually a fact and i would know because my dad was freinds with Rory Gallagher

  • You know, if this isn't a genuine quote, it certainly could be.

Hendrix and Gallagher were contemporaries, and Jimi was in England when Rory was... they were even both at the legendary Isle of Wight festival, although they didn't, evidently, play together. They were definitely twin sons of different mothers.

Both brilliant and self-taught. Both blues-based. Both (sadly, and for different reasons)doomed.

    RIP Jimi and Rory.

  • The man can entertain an audience ...

    What a turn ...

  • rory one of the Greatest players ever from the heart!

  • Watching him closely - when doing his vocals - it seems like he does the guitarplaying sooo easy. Very classy.

  • that's the sure sign of pure musical genius. They make it look soooo easy! Then people like me try it and it feels like my fingers are tied in a gordian knot and covered with molasses .... but i can imagine right? LOL.

  • WOW . Great!!

  • my 2 cents. Rory, Jeff, Jimmy, Eric, Stevie, et al, all had their roots in real, deep, deep blues. Everything kinda starts from there and then goes wherever...especially if there's talent involved. Rory was incredible for the reason he could make his guitar "cry or sing", just like the song says...
