Great stuff that I learned from your video. How do you setup the S90 to take continous pictures? I want to take continous picture of a sport event like Tennis, football etc. It is about couple second between shots, I want to take as many shots continously as I can by holding down the take picture button. Can S90 do this? what is your suggestion for what I am trying to do here.
Hey, at first I thought you were asking about time lapse photography. Then I realized you wanted to shoot in burst mode. You will need to install CDHK (Canon Hack Development Kit) and then find a plugin for continuous shooting.
Check out youtube videos for CDHK to learn more (I'm no expert). You need to install CDHK on a memory card, and then boot up the firmware. After doing this you need to find a plugin to run burst mode, I think it may be called MoreBest. Good luck.
That's a big drawback with the camera. The best way to take video is to make sure that you use the optical zoom before you start recording. This will ensure that the video is a clear as possible.
After you have started to record any zooming will be digital, which will be pretty low resolution. I have two videos posted on my channel from a concert I went to. I think one of them I had the optical zoom set up properly and on the other one I used digital zoom. Big difference.
Color swapping video can be done in Adobe After Effects. It could also probably be done in Final Cut Studio (there is an entire program called Color that is part of Final Cut Studio).
For pictures you can swap colors in Photoshop, GIMP (a free program), and to some degree in Lightroom.
Google it online and you should find tutorials on how to do this.
Thanks for taking the effort for doing this review,it really is very very helpful for people considering buying a camera like this, your review is very informative, thanks alot!!Brilliant!
Your videos are really useful for getting a good idea about the camea; thanks for taking the time to do so. I was hoping you could help, what's the focal range that you can use the lens at f/2.0 -- 28mm to ?? And then is f/4.9 the widest afterwards for the rest of the range up to 105mm?
The falloff in F stop is immediate when you start zooming in.
@ 28mm the widest aperture is f2.0
@ 105mm the widest aperture is f4.9
Unfortunatly I can't tell you exactly how the f stop lines up with focal length but here is an approximation:
28mm - f2
35mm -f2.8
50mm - f3.5
85mm - f4.5
105mm - f4.9
Personally I usually shoot wide, so I never have much of a problem. This will be a problem if you shoot zoomed in lowlight. You might want to consider the Panasonic LX3 for that scenario.
Thanks for the reviews. Just got the S90 and was wondering If you would know why I'm getting this message on my computer when I'm uploading images with a formatted card " The files appear to be unsupported or damaged"
Hey, I'm not sure why you are having that issue but I suspect it might be one of two things.
1) I've found that I needed to install the Canon software that came with the camera before I could transfer my pics to the computer, may have something to do with that.
2) Did you format the SD card you were using before taking those pics? If you didn't it may be that the files got corrupted.
It may not be either of the above but these are my best guesses. Try formatting the card next time.
maybe CHDK will come through for this camera. I had CHDK on my a590 and it was great.
I've been reading on DPreviews that one of the rings is pretty easily changed causing problems with exposure or ISO. I'm going to see if I can go handle this in a B&M before deciding between this, G11, or FZ38
Thanks for the vids... not many of the S90.
Video seems fine for SD and the sound is perfectly acceptable.
I've read those comments about the back control ring. Personally I don't have a problem with it but I think people with larger hands may have problems.
I never knew about CHDK but it seems interesting, if they release a version for the S90 I'll review it.
This brings up a good question, maybe a lower end camera like a SD880 + CHDK might be a better value than an S90. The only difference would be the optics and controls (not sure how CHDK will integrate w/ the control rings).
Great review. You've really got your review style down pat!
This video quality is perfectly good, except when you blow it up full screen. Then it's crummy. As for the sound, everything sounds fine here. No criticism. My BIGGEST criticism over the S90's video (other than lack of HD) is the lack of autofocus during panning. There's really no excuse for the camera not having this. Perhaps Canon could do it via firmware upgrade, but probably won't. Thanks again for the great work.

What's the maximum minutes of video can you record on this camera
romodrummerjz 2 years ago
1 GB = 12 minutes @ 640 x 480
If you shoot 320 x 240 then you should be able to get 36 minutes/GB (according to Canon).
So it depends mostly on how much space you have on your SD card.
