Obama didn't flip more states because Bush carried many in the high-10s and 20s (percentage points margin).
Obama's shift was similar to 1980 Reagan: 1976 Ford lost by almost 3%. Reagan shifted the popular vote by about 12%, to win by 9 points. There were enough states in the margins to flip for Reagan, giving him 489 electoral votes. Obama, with 365, made up for Kerry's similar-to-Ford loss, shifting 9.75% to win by 7.25 points.
After that election Oklahoma, Arkansas and Wyoming have become my favorite States.

I was right on every state except for Indiana and Missouri, and both of those were decided by under 1% of the vote.
