The building is the assayer's office at Independence Mine State Historical Park in Hatcher Pass, Alaska. They have Marmots there, but comparing it to the ermine for size, it's too small to be a marmot.

That's the point, the ermine wants to eat the squirrel. For that to happen the squirrel needs to die. My guess is that with the snow so deep, that ermine had to fight such big prey, otherwise he/she would have gone for something easier.

Actually, weasels and ermines aren't major carriers of rabies. Maybe badgers, possibly fishers, but the only thing you'd get from a weasel, stoat or mink's bite is a lot of pain and a hard time getting the creature off.

Of course, if you don't bother to disinfect the wound, then there's a risk of infection, like any major injury.

And while weasels and their ilk are naturally bold, they'll run away if you rush at them.

That stoat deserves a trophy. I guess a squirrel pelt will have to do.
