This tremelo call is a call of stress. While a beautiful sound, the loon was stressed by how close you were. Especially if there was a chick nearby. I'm afraid she/he saw you as a threat. Whenever you hear the tremelo, something is too close. An eagle, another loon, or a person.
i've seen a large pike eat a baby loon before, it was so sad, its mother wouldn't stop looking for it and calling :(

@AllstarCanadian loons generally only have one or two babies, actually! they aren't like ducks and geese which have major flocks.
