this game probably would have gotten alot bigger if it weren't for the lack of good advertising(atleast in the US) and the fact that everyone assumed it was a def jam:fight for NY knock off. and you're right a remake with more emphasis put on player vs. player would shake up the entire fighting scene
I... dig this game. However, I'm STILL having some issues. Though the controls are easy to learn, timing is freakin' CRUCIAL against multiple opponents, especially for counters. I'm only through Mission 30, and it's gettin' a bit tough. I've had to restart Missions quite often.
I remember playing this game...it was REALLY tough at times so you felt really accomplished once you beat some of the missions. Also, you got to play as Tony Jaa! Say what you want the guy in the pink shirt doing muy thai is freakin' Tony Jaa...
I can't hear you over the music. You seem to have good points though. I found this game in my vast collection three days ago, and have been playing it none-stop pretty much. It's just so much fun.
Def Jam ICON wasn't that good since it was made by the Fight Night team at EA Chicago. When AKI did the first two Def Jam games, at least the fighting system was better.
I have this game and I have to say, this is one of those games that people need to play instead of those countless Dynasty Warriors games. Not to go against Dynasty Warriors, it's just that they are getting stale with the 3D beat-em-up genre they employed mostly since 2. Now back to Urban Reign, this has to be one of the greatest 3D beat-em-up ever hit the PS2. It's just a breath of fresh air from the stale crap that has been plaguing the next-gen consoles as of now.
So, do you know how to make video games or know someone who knows how to make video games, drunkenmaster226? Though I have seen this game before, I have never played it and, truth be told, the last beat-em-up that was 3-D that I played was Fighting Force 64 (I think). I played its sequel for the PS1 but it sucked balls. At any rate, I am making a beat-em-up game of my own and I need some advice on how to make it long, have good replay value, and a good storyline, please. Thank you.
I've never made a real video game (just BASIC sidescrollers and text games), nor do I know anyone who has.
But as long as you avoid any random backtracking, reusing enemies for different areas and forcing the player to play with each character (if you plan to have more than one), you should be safe. And branching story paths are always a plus, if you can manage to make them.
So, in the terms of side-scrollers, would that also mean that you have also made an old-school, 2-D beat-em-up in your spare time, drunkenmaster226? Please let me know the answer to the question. Thank you.
but it's true. DJV is the definition of a game being all hype. it is horrible character, a shitty storyline, and stock wrestling moves with names that tried to make it sound more ghetto. if it wasn't for the fact that i could play as Method Man and Ludacris that game with be complete shit.
Let's leave AKI/Syn Sophia out of this... True, Vendetta emplored hip-hop, but it was made in response to the stagnancy of WWE wrestling games during that time. You can't really bash AKI since Vendetta was their first wrestling game in a while since WWF No Mercy on N64.
In the case of Def Jam Vendetta, EA and AKI didn't have any choice but to slap another brand since their PS2 WCW wrestling title was canceled due to WWF/WWE buying out WCW.

I loved this game. A little frustrating at times, but the multiplayer was my favorite aspect of the game.

The pros of the game:
Big character roster if you unlock characters in story mode and mission mode
4-player game
Unique fighting engine
The cons of the game:
100 Mission Story Mode
Some missions may seem impossible to beat
No online play
Have to unlock everything by beating the game

Nothing compare to Stree. . . err I mean Tekken (since its free roam beat em up system sucks ass)

No, sorry. Just platformers.

Nice list. I usually use Brad, Jake, Park, Paul, Tong Yoon and Lilian in VS, but in Free mode I just abuse Napalm 99.
drunkenmaster226 3 years ago
Good review, I'm curious as to who your faves are in VS or Free modes. Mine are Kelly, Brad, Law, Colin, Kadonashi, McKinzie and the monster Golem.
