Hi Monica, The cake boards are not that thick and if you sharpen your dowel pretty sharp, it's actually very easy. Just need a little bit of pressure and voila! :)
Was there a cake board under the 8 inch cake or did you you directly stack the cake on top of the other? I always leave the board, but I was just curious because I couldn't tell.
Yes, there should always be a cardboard cake board underneath your cake. If there's no cake board, then the straws underneath will go into the bottom of the cake on top. The straws are holding up the cake board. Always a cake board. :)
Thank you Laura for this video. I placed my order for the straws too ;) to cut wood dowel i used a roses cutter from home depot. (garden area) Excelentt!
thanks for te reply, and will order the straws. how many straws would you use if the bottom were 12" and the top 10" and than an 8"? Are these straws strong enought for this example?
You're welcome! :) Yes, they would be perfectly strong for tiers that size. I would use the same number of straws as I did in the 3 tiers in my video, I would just spread them out a bit more. :)
With all those straws, how much cake is left. Should you allow a larger cake than you need for the lost cake due to straws. Example: If a 10" cake serves 25 should I adjust that figure to lets say 22. (only examples)
Thanks for the tips, I especially liked the fat boba straws, the dowels are always a pain in the neck, going to order some those.. Great job, was the cake airbrushed? I jgot one for xmas, was going to try it out for my xmas cake, but was so sick, spent four days in bed, but tomorrow is my birthday, so going to give it a shot for my birthday cake.
A couple questions! First, whenever I bake a certain size cake, say 8 inch, it never fits on the 8 inch cake board! It's always smaller, do you know anything about this? Second question, I see a bit of space between the top and middle tier, will gravity eventually push them together or do you have to cover it with a band or beaded border? Thank you for your videos! You are so inspiring! :)
Thanks! Glad you like my videos. Yes, it will always shrink a tiny bit but it shouldn't shrink too much. The space in the middle is mainly caused by how much thick icing I piped on top of each straw. The reason I like to add a lot is to make sure it sticks. But you don't have to use as much as I do. But, the answer is yes, gravity will take over and in time will press down and lessen the gap. There might still be a tiny gap so this is when we pipe border or use some other type of decoration. I
Hi Laura! I love this video. you explained it so well =) just have one question though. Is it really easy to poke through the cake boards with the sharpened wood dowel? ill be making my first 3 tier cake and it's gonna be my first time to use a wood dowel at the center. thanks!
THANK YOU SO MUCH! Glad you liked it! ;) EXTREMELY EASY to poke through the cake boards! LOL! Be sure to twist and push down slowly at the same time. :)
Adelante amiga!!! Feliz Ańo Nuevo! :) Muchisimas gracias! :)
Always leave the cake boards under your cakes. This is what is laying ON the straws. If you remove the cake board then it defeats the whole purpose. The straws underneath would then start to go into the cake on top. Know what I mean? The boards are like platforms for each tier. :) Hops that helps! :)
Hi, I'll have to give the straws a try. We use wood dowels now, and to cut them we use a pvc pipe cutter and it's quick and easy and flush with no splinters. Thanks for the great video.
You're very welcome! Let me know how you like them! I like the straws because they are very wide and cover a larger surface area. Hope you like 'em! Happy New Year! :)
Hi! You can get it at any craft store. Here in El Paso they have them at Hobby Lobby and Michaels. Make sure you go to the aisle where they have all the wood crafts. :)
@laurapoopie ... Thanks you.. if i can't find on the craft stores in Australia.. do u think can i use the dowel from Hardware shop one?? is it safe for the cake?? thanks once again...
Ps:: Almost forget...
HAPPY NEW YEAR.. WISH YOU A BLESSED AND SUCCESS NEW YEAR 2012... AMEN!
You're welcome! I'm sure you can use the dowels from hardware shops! If they're made out of wood then they're probably the exact same thing. I always wipe down my dowels with a wet paper towel because Lord knows how long they've been sitting on the shelf so just be sure to clean it. :) I'm positive it will be perfectly ok! God bless you too and Happy New Year!!! :)
oh my gosh Laurita!! Thank U, Thank U amiga miya!!! I so appreciate u for taking the time out of your busy schedule to show me how u do this!! Thank u for sharing your tips and success how u create your cakes. I've told u this many times, u really inspire me to be creative and give me the push that I can do this!! My goal is make more cakes this year and bring a lot of happiness to clients parties just like u have been doing! Bless U Laurita! Happy New Year Amigita!!! Love, Yaneri

You are so very welcome! Will definitely plan more for the future! Go bless you and Happy New Year! Thank you for always being so kind! :) I appreciate you! :)
You're very welcome! I suppose it's the recipe that dictates the firmness. Some cakes are very fragile and crumble. It helps to refrigerate your cakes for a long time to make them more rigid. I don't use any cream of tartar in my cakes. Hope this helps and thank for watching! :)
Hi! There is always a cardboard cake board underneath each cake. Without it, if you go to lift your cake, it'll totally fall apart. Always a cake board. :)
Thank you for that! That really pushes me to be better as well! I've lost count of how many mistakes I've made but that's how I've been able to learn. The more mistakes you make, the more you know what NOT to do. LOL! Glad you liked this tutorial and just keep at it girl! :)
Wow thank you so much for this awesome video !! I love all your videos but i love how you were able to take time out your busy schedule to show us all your techniques.. thanks again.. keep up the good work :)

There's hardly any cake lost. The amount lost would be the equivalent of one swallow of cake. LOL! I wouldn't worry about that in the least. :)
