To the guy who was going on about how it's a travesty that this was on a top 20 instead of the beatles... I agree. I think they should coexist on the list. But when you were like "Just ask them who inspired them. Who? THE BEATLES!" Actually... though they both influenced each other, The Beatles took HUGE influence from Pet Sounds specifically when they were getting into their psychedelic stage. John and Paul both say Pet Sounds was the leading inspiration for Revolver.

The Beatles are the most successful and influential recording artists of all time. It all started with The Beatles. The Rolling Stones deserve the title "Greatest Rock n Roll Band", although I think The Who. Led Zepplin is the most popular. The Who are the "Greatest Live Band". The Beach Boys were good and influenced many no doubt about it. The Beach Boys were a great but not in The Beatles league. In every way you can measure influence and success, hits, etc The Beatles win big time.

They are a great band but not on the level of The Beatles, musically and artistically and any other way of measuring it. The Beatles were the most successful recording artists of all time. I am not taking away from the Beach Boys but would not put them in my top 10 nor my top 20. Pet Sounds was and is great. They had recorded some of the greatest song of all time no doubt about it. I would rather listen to Pet Sounds than the Beatles any day. Not because I dont like the Beatles. I love 'em. But this is more real to me personally. Means a lot. Its not the little pop album with the la-la-la's and the bubble gummish hooks that people assume it to be. Too many people brush off the Beach Boys as a bubble gum band. For the record the Beatles them selves have said Pet Sounds in the greatest album of all time. The best Beatles album is Lonely Hearts and they(the Beatles) will falt out tell you that they were trying to match Pet Sounds. The BB struck first and moved beyond the simple 3 cord songs first. The Beatles had to match and they did..but 2nd doesn't count.

ELO Eldorado? ha ha ha ... I think Brian Wilson was very impressed with the Beatles Rubber Soul album and wanted to create something better, the best pop-rock album ever. So he made Pet Sounds, that most critics think it is better than Rubber Soul and different in style.

Beatles made only 2 landmark albums that made pop music advance and reach the top. Revolver and Sgt. Pepper's. The rest are only personal preferences.

I also notice that your taste in music is rather narrow.

U2 was the band of the 90's. @faceinembryo I haven't heard Big Star #1. I'm a fan of all the other albums on your list except for Devo. You're right about the Rolling Stone thing. The Beatles have been elevated to a level higher than they deserve. People are in denial about the fact that the Beatles were essentially a boy band, singing songs for girls, until they took drugs and became important. They had good hooks, but awful production, and poor instrumental performances. "I Want To Hold Your Hand" ? Boy band at the start.

@spaceman979 oh sorry man lol i'm used to having to defend myself over this. yeah, roxy had a little mainstream success pre avalon. virginia plan had little chart success ..as well as a few others like ladytron, etc. eno didn't really have alot of MAINSTREAM success, however, he was renowned as a producer for talking heads, bowie(somewhat), and U2. although, his music and impact on our generation of music is unmeasurable.
