Some 46 years after its release, and God Only Knows is STILL one of the single greatest tracks ever recorded in the history of pop music...this song still evokes some very strong emotion in me!!!
i dislike so much that the description says " listen to this with headphones, like it deserves to be listened to." that's the problem with modern music listeners. everything is an individualistic experience, rather than a group one. listen to this with friends :)
People bickering in the comments section of You Tube over the relative merits of the Beach Boys vs. the Beatles. These are clearly People With Too Much Time on Their Hands.
@Mszinabina What a wonderful memory you have of your grandmother. God only knows, but I'm sure one day you will have an eternity with her. Thank you for sharing your poignant reminiscence,
To the guy who was going on about how it's a travesty that this was on a top 20 instead of the beatles... I agree. I think they should coexist on the list. But when you were like "Just ask them who inspired them. Who? THE BEATLES!" Actually... though they both influenced each other, The Beatles took HUGE influence from Pet Sounds specifically when they were getting into their psychedelic stage. John and Paul both say Pet Sounds was the leading inspiration for Revolver.
@libertines24 to say God Only Knows is the best song or that Pet Sounds is the best album shows that your acceptance of other bands and songs is very limited. I could not say what my favorite album is or what my favorite song is but I could probably tell you my top 25 albums and my top 50 songs.
The Beatles are the most successful and influential recording artists of all time. It all started with The Beatles. The Rolling Stones deserve the title "Greatest Rock n Roll Band", although I think The Who. Led Zepplin is the most popular. The Who are the "Greatest Live Band". The Beach Boys were good and influenced many no doubt about it. The Beach Boys were a great but not in The Beatles league. In every way you can measure influence and success, hits, etc The Beatles win big time.
@libertines24 I am 52 and grew up with Beach Boys. I have seen them in concert 3 times. They are a great band but not on the level of The Beatles, musically and artistically and any other way of measuring it. The Beatles were the most successful recording artists of all time. I am not taking away from the Beach Boys but would not put them in my top 10 nor my top 20. Pet Sounds was and is great. They had recorded some of the greatest song of all time no doubt about it. Cheers
@libertines24 not in any particular order, Quadrofenia, Ziggy Stardust, Machine Head, Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys, Sticky Fingers, Some Girls, Who's Next, Abby Road, Revolver, Hendrix, Houses Of The Holy, Physical Graffiti, Tommy, It's Only Rock n Roll, Against The Wind, Let It Be, Sgt. Pepper, Brothers And Sisters, Pet Sounds, Seventh Sojourn, how is this list?
@TheChriskoz14ify yes you correct, Dark Side and Revolver are two more great albums by two great bands. I am not dissing other bands or albums just because I did not list them. I could only list so many due to space but your point is well taken. I just rattled off those top 20 quickly. If I thougth it about it a little longer and had more space those two albums would be on there, thanks. You must admit the list is impressive. Cheers.
@habsman105 thanks man! I think my list is very good just for rattling 20 albums off of the top of my head that are my favs. Did you read my other posts? cheers mate
I would rather listen to Pet Sounds than the Beatles any day. Not because I dont like the Beatles. I love 'em. But this is more real to me personally. Means a lot. Its not the little pop album with the la-la-la's and the bubble gummish hooks that people assume it to be. Too many people brush off the Beach Boys as a bubble gum band. Brian Wilson is the ameriKan genius. Beatles are pretty much over-rated now. THANJK YOU for posting and saying what you said. Peace♥..i also agree with 'Banjo'
Pitchfork called it THE number one song of the 1960s - I agree although I have a soft spot for "in My Room" "Surfer Girl" and especially "Good Vibrations."
For the record the Beatles them selves have said Pet Sounds in the greatest album of all time. The best Beatles album is Lonely Hearts and they(the Beatles) will falt out tell you that they were trying to match Pet Sounds. The BB struck first and moved beyond the simple 3 cord songs first. The Beatles had to match and they did..but 2nd doesn't count.
@MCDIRT69 oh there is a glitch on youtube now where it only shows your views. On mine it says there is 5,000,123 views. Just watch it more, that'll fix it.
you are completely right. I worked this morning at three AM and this was the first album i put on with my headphones as i worked. it is genious and absolutely beautiful. you gave a great description. you obviously appreciate beautiful music. and this album does stand up against the beatles, without a doubt.
It is a shame that people can't even express or share the music they love on YouTube without someone being mean and assholish about it. Everyone's tastes and perceptions are different. It would be such a boring world if we were all alike, now wouldn't it?
BTW, I LOVE this album, and I am quite educated in music!
well, I am not sure what the argument is below, but I just wanted to comment that this is the best beach boys song. I is so different from the popular beach boys songs and I cannot understand why the song(and the album for that matter) has not played more often on radio over the years.
A top 20 list without the Beatles? I think not. Just ask the performers themselves about what inspired their music. Yeah, that's right, The Beatles. Brian Eno?? Yikes. So YOUR list is weak because it's missing: Abbey Road and Revolver. Also, Eldorado by ELO. When you grow up, you'll have a better understanding of your errors. Oh, and I forgive you.
ELO Eldorado? ha ha ha ... I think Brian Wilson was very impressed with the Beatles Rubber Soul album and wanted to create something better, the best pop-rock album ever. So he made Pet Sounds, that most critics think it is better than Rubber Soul and different in style.
Beatles made only 2 landmark albums that made pop music advance and reach the top. Revolver and Sgt. Pepper's. The rest are only personal preferences.
I also notice that your taste in music is rather narrow.
@b3yonc3LLLuva Your list has many flaws, as I'm sure you do also. Brian Eno?? Just another anti-war activist with no directions. Liberals!!! Give me a break. And the Velvet Underground wasn't even a real band; just a bunch poets who wanted to look cool. Their music is horrible, as most music historians would agree. You should try attending your community college and take a music appreciation class. Moron!!
@ericcarmenfan i'm sure music historians will all agree that the velvets and eno had their place in music (ie. eno godfather of ambience). since when does anyone's political beliefs interfere with their ability to make good music? Oh, nothing ..lol whats up with all this music historian bullshit anyways? is that your best argument? i love the current state of youtube ..you can't even post a video about some music youre down with without people being insulting. children
@faceinembryo I see you removed you list of favorite albums. Anyone can have an opinion, but when you make your argument without any qualifications, and leave it out there for us to read, then it is nothing more than an opinion that carries no weight other than for you personally; this is fine. I imagine there are some people out there who would have put the Bay City Rollers on your list. That is fine for them, but they could never qualify that view.
@ericcarmenfan id lke to think that my opinion as to what my favorite albums are on MY PAGE on MY CHANNEL validates itself by default..i never tried to make an argument, just simply stated what my favorites are. Yeah, i removed them and it's a damned shame I have to ..people like you make it not worth doing things that QUITE a few people actually enjoy seeing/participating in. It's never been an opinion, only a preference, it's a list of my favorite albums. you're kindof being pathetic with this
@faceinembryo I never told you to remove your list, but you did put it out there knowing it would be challenged, as is evident by the many negative comments from your adoring fans. They're the ones who have used words like "crap" when referring to your list; not me. I only questioned the legitimacy of your choices. By the way, I do agree with you on "Low." I saw Bowie during his last concert tour before his heart attack. Great show and he is a great artist; of course, that's only my opinion.
@ericcarmenfan yeah, i removed my list. it's not worth keeping up, it's just taken out of context - i don't want anymore junk emails from grown ass immature 50+ year old men like you trying to show their dick about how old and misinformed the younger generation is "You should try attending your community college and take a music appreciation class. Moron!!" "I forgive you", seriously? like i said, your opinion holds no validity grandpa
Eno anti-war activist? I wish i knew what you are talking about.
Velvet Underground didn't need to be a real band. I think they looked cool and the music was too.
You can't learn about music in college or conservatories.
There are no absolute standards in arts and music. If there were, we would had only Beethoven in classical music and Beatles in pop-rock and all other musicians would be at garbage can as useless.
@ericcarmenfan I would have never guessed that you were listening to the radio in 1968 with how childish your arguments are. really, over fifty years old and carrying on like this? yeah, your opinions carry alot of validity. stop trolling my channel
@faceinembryo It's interesting that anyone challenges your musical opinions has to be assaulted by you verbally. A complaint has be logged against you through Youtube.
@ericcarmenfan lol file a complaint against me when you clearly started shit on my channel. "when i grow up i'll have a better understanding of your errors?" and you forgive me? that's insulting. don't worry though, i'm not pathetic enough to report you to youtube.
@ericcarmenfan Elvis was the entertainer of the 50's. The Beatles were the band of the 60's. Led Zepplin was the band of the 70's. Michael Jackson was the entertainer of the 80's. U2 was the band of the 90's. Importance in rock n roll, history, longevity, hits, concert tickets sold, money earned, radio and TV play, successful albums, influence, royalties, publishing, movies, innovation, ground breaking albums; The Beatles, The Stones, The Who, Led Zepplin. Those are the top 4 bands.
@ericcarmenfan The Beatles, The Stones, The Who, Led Zepplin are the greatest singer/songwriters and musicians. Not taking away from The Beach Boys. You can play any Beatles, Stones, Who or Zep album and it is good, real good. I own them all and not one bad album from those four bands. There are alot of great musicians and singer/songwriters out there and The Beach Boys are up there but not at the very top.
@canaryman69 You are correct regarding the great work of those bands. The new release of "Quadrophenia" is incredible; however, my point is that "Pet Sounds" is not just a "great" album. It is a masterpiece of work; along the likes of Mozart. Yes, there are many great albums, but just a few are of them are stellar.
@ericcarmenfan look, The Beatles are my favorite band and has impacted my life, but this album is up there and even better than a few of The Beatles' albums
@faceinembryo Rellaxxxx....boy got defensive. Your top 20 list is crap, that's all I'm saying. No Dylan, Beatles, Stones, Nirvana, Zepplin, Floyd, etc? I'm not making a comment on Pet Sounds, it's in my top 5, but the rest is almost all crap.
None of them (besides PS) touch the albums I mentioned in my first post and I'll add Nevermind, Highway 66 Revisited, White Album, Exile on Main St, Dark Side of the Moon, IV, etc..
Yeah, it's YOUR FAVORITE ALBUMS LIST....but you have crap taste.
@Born2goFast33 i guess i didnt account for all the teens trolling getting their album lists off rolling stones magazines top albums or some bullshit. music is subjective, just because these albums aren't your favorite ..they're all classic albums. - i made this list about a year ago so it's kindof dated, but either way it's what i'm into not what some faggot that reads spin is
@faceinembryo I haven't heard Big Star #1. I'm a fan of all the other albums on your list except for Devo. You're right about the Rolling Stone thing. The Beatles have been elevated to a level higher than they deserve. People are in denial about the fact that the Beatles were essentially a boy band, singing songs for girls, until they took drugs and became important. They had good hooks, but awful production, and poor instrumental performances. "I Want To Hold Your Hand" ? Boy band at the start.
Pet Sounds is a great and milestone album and i think that most of the 20 albums in the list are very good. I don't like much some of these, but it's faceinembryo list. If i made a top20 list, many would disagree with some of the albums. All lists are personal.
I don't think faceinembryo has a crap taste. :)
Dark Side, Exile, Nevermind at top20 albums ever??? Many would disagree. You are not some kind of supreme reviewer, are you?
@b3yonc3LLLuva i hope youre not suggesting im not some kind of supreme reviewer ..this kid is textbook rolling stones magazine top albums list ..congrats with your copy paste
agree with your comments, and your album list , well most of it, not so sure about eno at number one, but some great music in that list , and a great synopsis of pet sounds, can i ask are you from usa or britain ?
@spaceman979 i'm from usa ..austin texas area to be exact. i understand why some people would have questions as to why i'd have eno at number one. eno, overall, is probably one of the most influential/important if not the most important figure of experimental music. yeah, i could have put something obvious at number one like the rolling stones, the beatles, etc ..however i feel eno at number one is a good representation of just how varied/incredible his career has been to pop music in general.
@faceinembryo roxy music and joy division ? did they make mainstream in the states, did eno make mainstream anywhere, you are a true music fan, how did you come by roxy or joy division, no reason why it shouldnt be such a diverse list, as someone once said there are only two kinds of music , good or bad, actual type doesnt come into it, thank you for sharing,
@spaceman979 because they are some of MY favorite albums and this is MY favorite album list. it has nothing to do with being varied, bad or good, american or not, mainstream or not. yes, roxy music had some mainstream success, but i still don't see how that argument has to do with anything?
@faceinembryo it wasnt an argument, it was a question, i wondered if roxy had mainstream in the states, pre avalon, i like your favourite list very much, once again thanks for sharing
@spaceman979 oh sorry man lol i'm used to having to defend myself over this. yeah, roxy had a little mainstream success pre avalon. virginia plan had little chart success ..as well as a few others like ladytron, etc. eno didn't really have alot of MAINSTREAM success, however, he was renowned as a producer for talking heads, bowie(somewhat), and U2. although, his music and impact on our generation of music is unmeasurable.
@faceinembryo no probs, sorrry if i came across as questioning in a negative way, i was genuinly interested, and thanks for posting this, been listening to pet sounds for days now, cheers

@ericcarmenfan Yes Quadrofenia is a masterpiece

Born2goFast33 1 year ago
@Born2goFast33 i guess i didnt account for all the teens trolling getting their album lists off rolling stones magazines top albums or some bullshit. music is subjective, just because these albums aren't your favorite ..they're all classic albums. - i made this list about a year ago so it's kindof dated, but either way it's what i'm into not what some faggot that reads spin is
faceinembryo 1 year ago
@faceinembryo I haven't heard Big Star #1. I'm a fan of all the other albums on your list except for Devo. You're right about the Rolling Stone thing. The Beatles have been elevated to a level higher than they deserve. People are in denial about the fact that the Beatles were essentially a boy band, singing songs for girls, until they took drugs and became important. They had good hooks, but awful production, and poor instrumental performances. "I Want To Hold Your Hand" ? Boy band at the start.

@Born2goFast33
You are not some kind of supreme reviewer, are you?
b3yonc3LLLuva 7 months ago
@b3yonc3LLLuva i hope youre not suggesting im not some kind of supreme reviewer ..this kid is textbook rolling stones magazine top albums list ..congrats with your copy paste

@faceinembryo If he likes those albums, what is it to you? To each his own.
SRone45 6 months ago
Not having The Beatles (Rubber Soul, the inspiration for this entire album in particular) on your list of 20 is ludicrous.
We won't even get into Revolver, Sgt Pepper, and Abbey Road either...All of which are better than nearly every album on this list.

@Born2goFast33 alright troll why don't you read the comments. this is MY FAVORITE ALBUMS LIST

agree with your comments, and your album list , well most of it, not so sure about eno at number one, but some great music in that list , and a great synopsis of pet sounds, can i ask are you from usa or britain ?
spaceman979 1 year ago
@spaceman979 i'm from usa ..austin texas area to be exact. i understand why some people would have questions as to why i'd have eno at number one. eno, overall, is probably one of the most influential/important if not the most important figure of experimental music. yeah, i could have put something obvious at number one like the rolling stones, the beatles, etc ..however i feel eno at number one is a good representation of just how varied/incredible his career has been to pop music in general.
faceinembryo 1 year ago
@faceinembryo roxy music and joy division ? did they make mainstream in the states, did eno make mainstream anywhere, you are a true music fan, how did you come by roxy or joy division, no reason why it shouldnt be such a diverse list, as someone once said there are only two kinds of music , good or bad, actual type doesnt come into it, thank you for sharing,
spaceman979 1 year ago
@spaceman979 because they are some of MY favorite albums and this is MY favorite album list. it has nothing to do with being varied, bad or good, american or not, mainstream or not. yes, roxy music had some mainstream success, but i still don't see how that argument has to do with anything?
faceinembryo 1 year ago
@faceinembryo it wasnt an argument, it was a question, i wondered if roxy had mainstream in the states, pre avalon, i like your favourite list very much, once again thanks for sharing
spaceman979 1 year ago
