  • Let me give you a hand: Obama is saying:

    "I think it would be a terrible precedent if we start moving backwards into the era in which we are seeing military coups as a means of political transition, rather than democratic elections," Obama said, "The region has made enormous progress over the past twenty years in establishing democratic traditions in Central America and Latin America. We don't want to go back to a dark past."

  • While Obama refers to this "dark past" and "terrible precedent", the images show the "dark past" and "terrible precedent" of the previous US-supported era of coups. Of course, Pinochet argued that his was not a coup, as do some supporters of the 1976-1983 Argentine dictatorship, but supposing for a moment that Pinochet's WAS indeed a coup, that is quite evidently what the images are showing. Do you get it now?
