  • so this doesn't really show "how to play" its more like a demo. so rename the title.

  • Im trying to find a video or audio file that show what a 12 string sounds like

tuned a whole step down so I can copy it for mine. I haven't found one yet.

  • Wonderful touch!

  • great vid, a little advanced for me though :P

  • Tab would be amazing

  • does anybody know what instrument dave actually plays this song with? he doesn't use a capo in his shows and the instrument looks smaller than a guitar.

  • What are the names of the chords? You did great, by the way.

  • this is good he's really good at this

  • GREAT SONG

    GREAT SOUND

    GREAT VIDEO

if you only had grey street and bartender

  • Thank you. I've actually covered both of those in the past. Maybe if I have some time on my hands I'll be able to get those up on here.

  • grey street, baby blue, and bartender are my favorite songs

how long have you been playing its seems like your pretty good

  • whats the third chord in the verses? it's Em, G, ?

  • The third chord is Em

  • tab please?

  • haha the only thing more gay than this bogus instructional is getting mad at someone for pointing out how gay it is

    hahahaha

  • Why would I be mad? I could honestly care less if you or anyone else doesn't like the video. Its for whoever finds it helpful (which a lot of ppl have). It obviously doesn't work for you so find something that does and quit bein a little bitch about it.

  • sorry man, that was my dumbass roommate who posted that.

  • Comment removed

  • I posted this because its not only a great song, but its not played on a standard tuned guitar. This video was in no way an attempt to show off. I understand not everyone is capable of learning a song by watching it on screen, but every "instructor" I've ever dealt with has easily been capable.

  • just got a guitar today.wanna learn how to play.music is amazing and i like dave matthews because his music has a deeper meaning.and good beginner vids ppl know of?

  • Sorry... But I wouldn't consider this i how to... It was more like you just playing the song...

  • some people can learn a song just my watching and listening to people play it.. people like that are hated by me because i want to be able to do it too :/

  • How would you have a beginner play this?

  • Why- No offense to your video, it's brilliant- Why does everyone call it "My Baby Blue"? I bought the album the week it came out, and it's just 'Baby Blue'.

    Thanks.

    Its been bugging me.

  • Yeah I know. When I posted this video it was about another 2 weeks before the album was released. I got ahold of a watermarked copy and this was the title on it. Its just a matter of laziness that I haven't changed it yet, I'll get on that...

  • it was renamed and the "my" was dropped. alligator pie was also renamed, it was originally named "Alligator Pie (Cockadile)".

  • Your really good and this is m y favorite song!!!

  • nice job man!

  • tabs please?

  • Music is about bringing your own style to it.......so exactly where is that written, or is that just an opinion... for you! Music is about many things, including expression and entertainment, when playing music If I feel I am expressing myself then why would I change what I am doing in order to feel that, Secondly, believe it or not, some people that enjoy watching live music cant stand when people ruin songs by "putting their own style into it" because maybe their own "spin" sucks!

  • Also can play this with capo on 3rd fret where it starts with Fdim shape to C to G to Am, and where the chorus would be Am shape - C - Em - F. I think the 8th fret is closer though. Good job ;-)

  • intro is a pain to tab, watch the video and fool around with it and you'll get it.

    chorus chords:

    D G G/B (slide 0/2 on the A string) Em G Bm C Em G Bm C

  • nice, i finally nailed it, it seems difficult at first but you just gotta keep fiddling around until you hear it, this video is priceless, THANK YOU! i will try to do a tab for it in the next day or two ;-)

  • hey what is the chord he starts out with?

  • sounds awsome man. some tabs would be really cool though

  • dude nice job this is awesome. I can tab it tho for anyone who wants it

  • Could you please tab this for me? That would be wicked awsome!

  • Yeah can I have the tabs too please?

  • hey what it the first chord. i know the 0245 then whatever note but waht chord is he strumming. and on the part with that g on gb on the 0245 what chord is it. thanks.

  • can u please just make a better lesson

  • Awesome cover dude and i completly understand the whole tabbing thing...but can u put out a how to and break down the intro for us? That would be amazing

  • This is very similar to John Mayer's 3x5, not saying he is better or what not, just listen to Any Given Thursday-3x5, & then this and you'll know what I mean

  • but this is a riff to another dave song called Sister...and it's been around several years

  • Very true my man, didnt even think about that

  • Thanks for posting. I am still a novice, but when I heard this song I had a strong desire to try to learn it, even though it may be above my skill level.

Although there are no tabs, it is certainly a helpful start.

    Thanks : )

  • Thanks everybody. I apologize for not tabbing this out for everyone but keep in mind if you have any specific questions, I'd be more than happy to help out. I'm thinking about putting up a cover of this soon. Thanks again everyone.

  • dude this is sweet, can you please tab it? i'd learn this much quicker if i just had the numbers laid out instead of having to watch your fingers to see which fret you're on. (i was able to figure out the intro though, which will tide me over.) thanks again!

  • I'm sorry man.. I'm really not a fan of notating music in tab. If you can come up with any questions I'd be more than happy to help out. If you already have the intro, then you have a handle on most of it. let me know how things are going

  • nice dude i like it.

  • that was way too sweet man, thanks for posting this "baby blue" video, nice!

  • hey great job man!

Sounds great, and good explanation in the comments also!

I just got the cd and rushed home to learn it haha, i was trying to figure out then stumbled upon this. thanks man!

  • ok well how did you figure out how to play this?

  • I figured it out by ear

  • what are the chords that you're playing?

  • for the intro/verse basically you keep your 3rd finger on the 2nd string 3rd fret. and the first chord is a C2, then you just move to the 2nd fret on the a string for the next chord. then the last chord is an Em after the walk.

For the chorus the chords are Em, G, Bm, C. (These aren't the actual chords being played. They are the shapes you would use if you weren't using a capo)

  • tab please

  • I'm really sorry guys... Unfortunately I do not notate in tablature. If there are any specific questions you have let me know

  • tabs please?!

  • a tab would be awesome

  • is there a tab for this?

a link or a post would be much appreciated! : )

  • ive seen daves mandolin good sir

  • k... i can see why you'd think its a mondolin, but i'm tellin you... its not. Its a high tuned 12 string guitar. You can look up Dave's equipment online if you don't believe me.

  • i think its played on a mandolin, the same instrument he plays shotgun and idea of you on...maybe its a twelve string idk

  • Dave doesn't even own a mandolin. I'm pretty sure its the same guitar he uses for shotgun and idea of you. Its a veillette gryphon 12 string guitar.

  • watch the Beacon Theatre concert on hulu. He plays a mandolin. I mean, unless he borrowed it... But yes, this song is played on a 12 string.

  • Yeah bud i actually already watched it. I don't know how i can be any clearer about this... the dark red little instrument? its a 12 string guitar. its the veillette gryphon. Not a mandolin.

  • Great Job!!

I knew he was playing a 12 string... I also picked out a way to play this on the 3rd fret with a F-2sus --> C --> B walkup. Your is much more accurate. Thanks a bunch... this song is so good.
