A lot of people think "Arirang" is just a random word/the name for the hill referred to in the song but it has the roots of "arittaum" (beautiful) and "nang" (closest translation... person??? like when they used to say nang-ja?)
i taught english in korea, and often think on my students and my host parents who thought of me as a daughter, most of my kids are all grown up now. i always loved this song.
This is a very beautiful rendition. My family recently hosted a group from Korea in Jacksonville, FL and one of the group's leaders taught me this song. It was quite an honor!
Arirang used to be the name of a pass or gorge in Choson (I use choson since it was used in the time before it Choson split into North and South Korea).
@toogsh1 Thanks for the infor. For a long time I was thinking it cannot be a sad song unless ...sorrow befallen and now I know the civil war that caused it.
