Wow people really need to learn there historical facts ,,,,,the jackson state university j-setts are the originators of the term j setting and the originators of the dance style
where is this J-setting coming from? Beyonce video was actually from the "Golden Girls of Alcorn State" back in the day. Actually most of her set came from a routine we did twenty (20) years ago. It was always popular just made more acceptable now in this day n age.
j-setting goes back way before Alcorn 20 year. Its a genre of dance. And as far as beyounce. here dances are mostly coreographed by males. . But if you feel like your golden girls had something to do with that then go right ahead. but i would suggest do some history on dance first.
First understand the question.....I asked about the term" j-setting" because that is not the name of the type of dance, that's just a name that they have given it now due to it being popular in the gay arena coming from the JSU Prancing J-Settes. And when I was talking about the GG routine was because most of her (Beyonce) routine is from a routine we did 20 years ago before this video came out. And to know your history the dance comes originally from Black majorettes where in
Black majorettes where in terms male/gay males perform now (something that they have been doing for about a decade n a half.) But ASU, JSU and most Black colleges have been doing this for over 60-70 years....and even before that it was apart of some African rituals...so therefore I know my history, maybe you need to learn yours. sorry to tell you that it was not called J-Setting...so again understand what the question is before trying to front me with stupid stuff.
The term J-Setting comes from The J-Settes, which is The Prancing J-Settes - it's the official name of the Jackson State University dance line, an auxiliary group of the Jackson State University Marching Band that began in 1971.
@detourzdoodlez again the name was a given to something that was here long before the "J-Settes" and just so you will know the Alcorn State University Golden Girls were first long before the J-Settes were even thought of. Mr. Griffin started 1966. But the question wasn't about who started the dance style, I wanted to know when the name J-Setting" was given to the style because they are not the founders of the style.
@youngdaughter It started in Jackson Ms. 1985 at Club Bill Disco wow what a long time an we you to work out on that stage an when we came to Traxx Atl. that's when it caught on
Just to further this debate....Beyonce did not make J-setting popular. Anybody who plays in band knows about j-setting. Just cause some people were living under a damn rock doesn't mean that the rest of us weren't well aware of the dance. Cause quite frankly people watched beyonce's video and didn't even know it was j-setting until other people started pointing it out. Yea...beyonce' brought j-setting to the mainstream...but for some of us j-setting has always been "popular".
Everyone is tripping off a question I asked and on top of that, everyone has misunderstood the question...I never said that I didn't know that form of dance, I asked about the name of the dance because this style of dance have been around alot longer than the name "j-setting"...b/c believe it or not the dance form is not called j-setting. So i have always known the style, but I asked about name.
i was aware of j sett before beyonce and im a straight female like they said beyonce only put a snippet of it in her routine. but im only one person. it may have made people aware because when i commented about it some people knoew some didnt. some people still dont know its j-sett
UM, BEYONCE DIDN'T MAKE THIS POPULAR. J-setting has been around since the beginning of the '00s. If you see the date of vid and the other j-setts vids, Beyonce did nothing but put a quick set in her video.
no foxy is right, beyonce made this popular to the masses just as Oprah does for books. the thing is, if beyonce had never seen it on youtube and done it, then it would not be known as it is now. that is the point of foxy's question. there was nothing in her question that asked how long it had been around was there. read the question dumb-ass
I know what the question was, bitch. And if you're going to call me a dumb-ass, can you...I don't know use proper grammatical skills. Otherwise I just feel complimented and not insulted.
well actually J-setting dates back as far as the early 1960s if not earlier. It has always been popular to alternatives lifestyles. However most of the mainstream worl has been unaware of this, until youtube made it possible for people to view and post videos freely. Beyonce just added a slight touch of popularity to the dance form, but Lazurline is correct, it was popular before Beyonce.
Yah there's a difference between when it starts and when it gets popular. I never would have heard of j-setting if it weren't for Single ladies- and I'm pretty sure that's true for a heck of a lot of people.
That said, this was cool and I'm a little on the obsessed side with these videos right now.
@foxybrownbaby i do not have any disrespect towards Beyonce or anyone to that matter. But the dance style has always been popular in main stream, it's the term"jsetting" that is new. That was the question that I was asking about the term that was giving to the style when already knew of it long before the J-Settes existed.
