Hipsters seem like people who try so hard to be different from the trendy crowd that they actually start to blend together all the same anyway because they are too self-obsessed with thier image. You dont seem like someone who needs to justify your interests with a label, so just be Danielle.
youre only a hipster if you consider yourself superior to others because they are mainstream and you are not. Also, hipsters usually have other hipster friends so if you dont that probably means you aren't.
Learning more about their cultures? Ok cool, rip all your clothes so they look old, get high a hella lot, take pictures of yourself with your head cut off and upload them on to Tumblr - you will become a hipster. They lead such productive lives.
I think you may have some hipster traits (e.g. liking indie music, wearing eclectic or eccentric clothing, and of course thrifting) but in my opinion being a hipster is something you have to intentionally want to become for the sole reason of being seen as "more hip" than others meaning that people who are genuinely "hip" or don't care about being hip aren't really hipsters regardless of what the trolls might say. I don't think it's something that you should pursue, but it's up to you.
Hipster has a very negative connotation to it. I consider it a very unoriginal thing to be, which is ironic, because being a hipster means being "original" and not "mainstream". You're not a hipster. You have very clear views and opinions that aren't swayed by what other people think. Don't be a hipster. I find them very annoying, and so does everyone who isn't a hipster.
I think you're sort of like me. Externally, you seem like a hipster, but you're really not. Your personality and preferences go a lot deeper than that.
Can the concept of hipsters just fuck right off. I'm tired of this idea that we have to label people simply by what they wear. It's just creates more boundaries we don't need. People are people and cannot be summed up in a word. Danielle is a girl that has an eclectic aesthetic style. She is not a fucking hipster. Cunts.
I don't think the definition of hipster is pretentious.... There are some people that will think their lifestyle is better than other people's no matter what. I think hipster is more about the fashion, music, and non-conformity to the larger culture.
I'd say no, seeing as hipsters tend to believe that they are better than everyone else, but your thrift clothes are quite hipster I guess. I'll say no, seeing as you don't qualify for every part of the job description.
BTW For those who don't know, hipsters are people that think they're better than everyone else because they believe the things they do, have and say are above the trends of the times.
@rosemarysaysrelax I'm from England too and we do have them. If you haven't already, join Tumblr and you will soon find out who they are :') failing that, urban dictionary xD
it annoys the fuck out of me when people automatically assume that every hipster is a pretentious cunt just because some pretentious cunts PRETEND to be hipsters.
It depends on which definition you want. Like all steryotypes there are a lot of different views defining it. If you're going with the style and music taste, then simply judging on the soft vintage tones of earlier videos and the thrifty gooness of your wadrobe then yeah, you have some hipster style. You're not pretentious or eliteist though, so to some people, you're not hipster. Personally, I don't think a social group should be defined by their worst habits so I'd say you're a bit hipster :D
Well, you dress and act like one to some extent. But you aren't a douchebag, so I'd call you a faux-hipster. Stop where you are now in the hipsterism. There are some excellent aspects, such as use of the look in moderation and how it gets away from the taboo of 2nd hand clothes.
The problems with the culture lie though in the one upsmanship of who is more trendy/indie/hipstery, which turn into giant pissing contests and are not desireable.
I would say that you're a hipster but also that most "hipsters" aren't hipster. You go to thrift stores whereas "hipsters" go to american apparel to buy clothes that look like they're from thrift stores. The true hipsters are awesome and love awesome music, and you are one of them
:( a few months ago i bought about 60$ worth of make up from sephora... it was the first time i'd ever been to the store and the first time i'd ever bought legitimate make up other than walmart mascara.
later that day, we went to forever 21 and i must've put it down with my purse to try something on, but when i grabbed my purse my sephora bag was gone.
If you get annoyed when one of your friends likes a band that you liked first, then yes. If you can't stand people who shop at K-mart or a branded store then yes. If you only like certain things because no one else likes them then yes. But just because you wear thrift clothes does not make you a hipster, i've got plenty of friends who wear clothes similar to your style and aren't hipsters.
Are you pretentious about EVERYTHING? Do you always have to have the last word and always have to be correct? Do you ONLY listen to indie rock? If no to all of those, then you're not a hipster and you really don't want to be. Also, if anyone tells you that isn't what the culture is about, they are a hipster and they are wrong. You should listen to the song "Admit it" by Say Anything for a more dynamic and hilarious description of a hipster.
Hahaha you're not a hipster... believe me. I am from Toronto and I see them all of the time. You are definitely not one of them. It's not something you want to be. Trust me--hipster is now synonymous with pretentious. Just because you wear vintage clothes and shop from thrift stores, that does not make you a hipster.
Toronto is the fucking hipster capital of North America. I lived there for a couple years. Bunch of pretentious hippie fucks. Kensington Market is probably the capital of the capital of the capital for hipster shit. LOL sorry for the vent I hate Toronto :P
@ninearthify I know. I am seriously getting sick of Toronto... I know people think it's the "hip" and "trendy" place to be. Honestly, it's not. So glad I'm going to university in a far away town :D
I didn't think being a hipster was something people would wanna do. As far as I know: Being a hipster is being artistic, unique and fashionable but taken to an insane degree... to the point where it doesn't make any sense. I think people are much better off being themselves and ignoring these kinds of things :)
lol @ all the hipsters in the comments section getting their butts hurt. the people getting upset in this thread about the term "hipster" probably gets called a hipster pretty regularly. just sayin'.
also, just passing you on the street, i would definitely assume you to be a hipster. not saying it's good, not saying it's bad. it just is what it is.
One commentator argues that "hipsterism fetishizes the authentic" elements of all of the "fringe movements of the postwar era—beat, hippie, punk, even grunge," and draws on the "cultural stores of every unmelted ethnicity", and "regurgitates it with a winking inauthenticity." Others argue that hipster is a cultural mythology, crystallization of a mass mediated stereotype generated to understand, categorize and marketize the indie consumer culture rather than an objectified group of people. ~Wiki
So it's more like a label that people make to try to pigeonhole people, when in reality we should all just be what we are, and do what we do, without limitations or labels.
i don't know why you would want to lable your self at all.....don't put your self in a specific category cause that tends to change your behavior based on what you think a hipster should act like..... just be yourself and if other people put you in a label of being a hipster thats there opinion....but don't lable yourself cause it will limit you eventually....
I'd say you are pretty near the side of hipster, but I tend to not acgnowlege the negative connotation assosciated with hipsters. I'd definitely say you're indie, which is pretty close to hipster.
Take it from one who has lived in Williamsburg Brooklyn, and The Mission in San Francisco, for years. I know hipsters. They are vain by definition. Educated, creative, quirky, skinny, colorful, liberal, slutty, self-destructive, elitist, urbane. All of those things. And every hipster is vain. Seeking to live tragic story, fashion their own myth of narcissist glory, and capture the envy of others. It is a pantomime of pre-self-actualization I don't see in you.
Others have said this too, but I will say it also. If you call yourself a hipster, and want to be, you aren't. It doesn't matter if you consider yourself one or not, all that matters is what you want to do. It could be more hipster oriented, and thats what you are, but not full blown. Also, I am not sure that those glasses really work well for you, just sayin.
You can't become a Hipster. A hipster is someone who defys any other stereotype. Basically be yourself and do what you want and defy what normal people do and you're a hipster. So there is no definition of hipster. Therefore you cannot become a hipster. There is a HUGE difference between the real definition of hipster, and the reputation and image that people have given it.
One more thing: since the advent of the internet, it's so much easier to find all these random things people don't know (or rather used to not know) about, being a "hipster" or knowing about these super-obscure things isn't really impressive or defining any longer. Knowing about some random band or artist or music venue isn't a badge of honor, because you probably just found it on StumbleUpon or Twitter or Eventful or just randomly on Google search.
...So it's just not efficient or accurate to call anyone a hipster anymore, because so many people have the characteristics that made hipsters hipsters, but then again those same people have a lot of other characteristics that aren't necessarily hipster-esque.
Yeah, real hipsters don't really exist anymore. There is still the identifier "hipster," but it's used basically for anyone who wears dark-rimmed glasses and listens to a band you haven't heard of. Since popular culture (aside from the REALLY terrible music) and fringe culture are becoming less and less easy to separate, it's really hard to identify different groups within our culture, since everyone is just kind of a mix of multiple cultural identifiers, really...
but i think thats the only hipster thing about you
everyone has some form of hipster
for example
i love vintage stuff and i just recently painted a galaxy
both of these things are hipster-esque
but i dont identify myself as a hipster
i think if you do decide to investigate the hipster ways you should make a video about all the stuff you learn about being a full fledged hipster n_n that would be fun
I have always kind of thought of you as hipster because of your vintage style and those glasses and your thrifting and artsyness and all. To me, I don't see the word hipster as negative.. I think "hipsters" always look adorable and freaking cool :) In some ways I wish I had some of those traits but I just really dont haha :) Whether you are "hipster" or not you are definitely adorable and freaking cool! :)
Did you call the bus company and ask? And i think you kinda look hipsterish and have like some qualities but you're not like full hipster. Me and my friend have come to that conclusion for oursleves but i think it applys well to you too.
I have a similar debate happening on occasion I mean I thrift, I attend an art university, I listen to indie music, I often watch movies in the indie section of Netflix. I own vintage cameras and items.
But then I realize that I wear avators and not ray bans. I listen to top 40 on occasion. And I wear contacts when I could wear glasses.
Very conflicting evidence.. Good thing labels are ridiculous
nice on no cuts! total grats. Hipster has become kinda of a watered down term and just doesn't mean much any more. You are arty and counter culture and perfect just the way you are. continue to be unique and awesome.
bu wondering if your a hipster then you are a hipster by trying to become a hipster you a not a hipster and by being incredibly boring and not having fun at an animalcollective show then you become a hipster yet again
I think liking things such as photography, alternative music and vintage clothing does not make anyone a "hipster". People have liked those things and dressed like that long before the "hipster" label came to be such. In my opinion being a hipster is just being a walking contradiction which you don't seem to be. But however you wish to label yourself is ultimately up to yourself. :)
I think you're sort of a mixture... your style can be a bit hipsterish depending on the outfit (and glasses!) But there's definitely none of that "oh, you've probably NEVER heard of this before lol" attitude of hipsters. Your attitude is definitely more indie (think Zooey D!) -- cute and approachable.
It's a pretty good happy medium between hipster and indie, I like it. :D
Besides, the moment you think you ARE a hipster, you stop being one. It's like The Game.
I think you're a borderline hipster. You aren't obnoxious about everything you do, so you're missing the personality aspect, but you have the activities/styles down pat. I've always thought of you as a a little bit of a hipster though.

I'd say you are pretty near the side of hipster, but I tend to not acgnowlege the negative connotation assosciated with hipsters. I'd definitely say you're indie, which is pretty close to hipster.
Marfwarrior 9 months ago
Haha- Just buy a ton of stuff to look cool-that's hipster.

@JoeFelice Wow what an incredibly concise and accurate mouth-full that was.

don't become a hipster.

Hipster! (True hipsters are unaware of the fact they are hipster but it is acknowledged by others that they are)
alylurker 9 months ago
Others have said this too, but I will say it also. If you call yourself a hipster, and want to be, you aren't. It doesn't matter if you consider yourself one or not, all that matters is what you want to do. It could be more hipster oriented, and thats what you are, but not full blown. Also, I am not sure that those glasses really work well for you, just sayin.

Aaah, labels are ridiculous :P
Just be Danielle. That seems to be working out quite well for you :]

Signs from this video that you are a hipster:
-You bought clothes at a thrift store
-You wear huge glasses that may possibly not be corrective
-You rode a bus from Canada
-You had to ask if you were a hipster (usually, hipsters are unaware that they are hipsters)

*hugs* sorry that happened to you......

You can't become a Hipster. A hipster is someone who defys any other stereotype. Basically be yourself and do what you want and defy what normal people do and you're a hipster. So there is no definition of hipster. Therefore you cannot become a hipster. There is a HUGE difference between the real definition of hipster, and the reputation and image that people have given it.
penguinpalsrkewl 9 months ago
One more thing: since the advent of the internet, it's so much easier to find all these random things people don't know (or rather used to not know) about, being a "hipster" or knowing about these super-obscure things isn't really impressive or defining any longer. Knowing about some random band or artist or music venue isn't a badge of honor, because you probably just found it on StumbleUpon or Twitter or Eventful or just randomly on Google search.

ppl who hate on hipsters are jealous and have nothing better to do... really if you don't like what hipsters do keep it to yourself

...So it's just not efficient or accurate to call anyone a hipster anymore, because so many people have the characteristics that made hipsters hipsters, but then again those same people have a lot of other characteristics that aren't necessarily hipster-esque.
Lauffles 9 months ago
Yeah, real hipsters don't really exist anymore. There is still the identifier "hipster," but it's used basically for anyone who wears dark-rimmed glasses and listens to a band you haven't heard of. Since popular culture (aside from the REALLY terrible music) and fringe culture are becoming less and less easy to separate, it's really hard to identify different groups within our culture, since everyone is just kind of a mix of multiple cultural identifiers, really...

i think your clothing style is hipster
but i think thats the only hipster thing about you
everyone has some form of hipster
for example
i love vintage stuff and i just recently painted a galaxy
both of these things are hipster-esque
but i dont identify myself as a hipster
i think if you do decide to investigate the hipster ways you should make a video about all the stuff you learn about being a full fledged hipster n_n that would be fun
ccstefsoccer4 9 months ago 2
You probably don't even know about the real hipsters, they're pretty obscure.

I've left headphones and shoes on a bus before... I sympathize!

sharizzle09 9 months ago
Did you call the bus company and ask? And i think you kinda look hipsterish and have like some qualities but you're not like full hipster. Me and my friend have come to that conclusion for oursleves but i think it applys well to you too.

You don't need a label! Forget the term "hipster"! Just be you, chica!

I recommend watching episode 7 of the new ABC show Happy Endings.
It should answer most questions you have about the Hipsters.
courtnog 9 months ago
I have a similar debate happening on occasion I mean I thrift, I attend an art university, I listen to indie music, I often watch movies in the indie section of Netflix. I own vintage cameras and items.
But then I realize that I wear avators and not ray bans. I listen to top 40 on occasion. And I wear contacts when I could wear glasses.
Very conflicting evidence.. Good thing labels are ridiculous
KMGallucci 9 months ago 2
nice on no cuts! total grats. Hipster has become kinda of a watered down term and just doesn't mean much any more. You are arty and counter culture and perfect just the way you are. continue to be unique and awesome.

Jozamonster 9 months ago
I think you're sort of a mixture... your style can be a bit hipsterish depending on the outfit (and glasses!) But there's definitely none of that "oh, you've probably NEVER heard of this before lol" attitude of hipsters. Your attitude is definitely more indie (think Zooey D!) -- cute and approachable.
It's a pretty good happy medium between hipster and indie, I like it. :D
Besides, the moment you think you ARE a hipster, you stop being one. It's like The Game.
nerdgirlhero 9 months ago
I think you're a borderline hipster. You aren't obnoxious about everything you do, so you're missing the personality aspect, but you have the activities/styles down pat. I've always thought of you as a a little bit of a hipster though.
topazliquidfire 9 months ago
If you think or say that you're a hipster, you're a poser.
