I think that there are a few things that could have made this interview better. The video is a little monotonous and could use some alternate footage here and there to break it up. The audio is also a little muffled and hard to understand at times. The content of the interview about the Malpais Treasure is quite interesting. I'm sure the book is also very interesting.
The audio is really bad, with wind clipping and overblown sound. The composition is very flat. The edit is to sharp and quick at times and the interviewer isn't engaging. Need some B-roll of the area and wild life, some of the trail, establishing shots.
I like how this seems almost like an impromptu interview. His story makes me curious and is kind of like a lure, but it's also kind of like a warning about The Badlands. If there is no real treasure out there, Mr. Chavez makes up for it! He's the kind of cool fellow I always love running into when I'm out in the world poking around to learn new things. Next time my son comes to visit, I should tell him about this place. METAL DETECTOR! (and a compass!) This video makes me smile.
I have heard some of the stories about the Malpais treasures. I think it is very likely they have never been found. I have also been through some of the Malpais. It is scary because it is so easy to get lost.
I liked hearing about his family history. I wish there had been some landscape shots, I've never been out there. I think it would better illustrate the mystery.
That is neat that this man has this history behind his family, It would be nice to know more about the treasures especially were the Gold is at! Just hearing the stories and history makes a place you want to visit. I would like to hear more to the El malpais.
I wish I could find this guy and let him know, that there is a old mine in malpais. I don't know what to do with a mine, I know there is some gold in there. What can you do with it? can't take it out. if you mess with the land the government would just take it away from you... so just leave it I guess...
Me and I couple of friends found that old mine... and it was on the left of a trail, but its so old now that we are afraid to go into it to far. We have ore out of it, lace with gold... Pretty cool....
Since 1939...wow! It's amazing that this man is preserving history that his father has left for him. I agree that this is a great local legend for the town of Grants.
It's interesting to see/hear things like this. Not being from this area, there is a lot I don't know. It's neat to learn some of the local history and lore.
I've heard about the treasure, and how people have been looking for years and it's never been found yet. Maybe the true treasure is the fresh air and blue skies of the Malpais.
I think its amazing that his father spent a good portion of his life trying to find this treasure. I believe you are very close my friend, don't give up!
That's what some people believe. I'd love to follow a treasure hunter on their search with a camera but I guess some guys out there carry guns and others get lost so maybe not :)
My Grandpa Max Mirabal use to go up to the mountain with all the Chavez brothers and their dad to look for this treasure. My Grandpa and his rods ... these metal rods he said would help him find minerals like gold. Ah memories...... and my Grandpa use to always talk about gus rainy too. :)
Martin has copies of his book. I'll have to get contact info and send it to people. I've had some people ask. I can email you the contact info. All these stories are great aren't they?
Been to El Malpais, never knew anything about any treasure.

I liked how Mr. Chavez reminds me of my Grandpa and how he is the ideal image of an older New Mexican man. This interview was interesting.

Impressive, I’m not from Grants and had not known about this. It would have been nice to have seen some of the trails or more of the surroundings.

It's a great local legend. The Malpais (the bad lands) live up to their name and have made for great storytelling.
