  • What a crock of shit

  • Actually, it's mercyless universe

  • Actually Dallas was by far the most popular show of the early 80's in France (even president Mitterand had the episodes taped). To us, this opening song is iconic, the same way your opening theme is to you. Most French are actually shocked to discover the original theme...

The bad thing it that, every time now we hear something about the city of Dallas, we can't help thinking "Ton univers impitoyable" ("your mercyfull universe") and that we imagine all Texans are like JR.

  • Dallas, your merciless world

    Glorifies survival of the fittest

    And under your relentless sun

The only thing you fear is death

Dallas, land of dollars and oil

    You don't know any mercy

    A revolver is your idol

    You're clinging to your past

Dallas, sick is the one who won't understand

One day it will cost him his life

  • and vis versa my dear!

  • Çà pétait bien les génériques made-in France !!! J´suis trop fan !!!

  • Thumbs up for Preston & Steve!!!

  • when my friend and I visited our friend working in the Paris, the first thing he said was, "and DALLAS has words to it!" we kept singing it throughout the trip.

  • I'm guessing Dallas was not all that popular in France.

  • dorky??? it's only DORKY FOR YOU! NOW ZIP and rewind!!!! Dallaaaaaaaaas ton univers inpitoyaaaaaable tata-tatata!

  • As a fluent speaker of French (native speaker of English) I can honestly say this French revision of the "Dallas" theme shocks and appalls me. "Dallas" was supposed to be a glitzy glamour-soap, hence the fast-paced, catchy, opening music. This cut from "The Very Best of French Easy Listening" would have been great for a more family-oriented show, like, say, "The Brady Bunch," but for the connving, backstabbing antics of Southfork? Je ne pense pas !

  • true this song is taken as a joke by us (french speaking)

but to be honest i quiet preffer watching De Niro, Eastwood or Al pacino in original version what about JR in italian then ??? jajajajajlol

  • Who replaced the intro theme with this crap?

  • FACEPALM!

  • @LondonUnderground186 Sorry the comment offended you. it was meant as a joke. BTW, you have a cool user name...

  • Elle est bien meilleur que l'original !

  • Who the hell made the subtitles in Swedish? Hilarious!

  • I didn't know that ELO did a version of this!

  • HIDEOUS!

  • this is awful!

  • one stevie dallas!

  • I'm a french (well french canadian) but this is ridiculous

  • Mon Dieu

  • The french have a fetish for dubbing? Let's rather say the original song sounded really crappy with this kinky saxophone.

  • Gee, that theme is pretty...dreadful. And, dammit, I was THIS CLOSE to starting to like the French again, too! ;)

  • CRHISTINE

  • very few countries in the world play shows in their original language. In my country belgium the half where i live plays everything in original. But in the other side where people speak french everything is dubbed. I think everything should be in the original language. BTW its a great way to learn a language, its how i learned english.

  • Nobody in the world has a language such as netherlandese, or I don't know how you call it.

  • we call it dutch

  • Dallas isn't dubbed in dutch?

  • Of course not. In the dutch part of belgium everything is played in the original language with subtitles. So if we would watch dallas for example it would be played in english with dutch subtitles.

  • maybe if you like texan accent, lol

  • Its funny:)

  • mdr de la balle!!!!

    Dallaaaaaaaas ton univers impitoyaaaaable!!!

Believe me this theme is far better than any other, for the only reason that nowadays we can laugh a lot about it and make a bunch of jokes with it. You american cannot do so, and you're only able to say "oh our theme is really cool listen to it" "oh yeah it's very cool" et nia nia nia "oh yeah we are morrow people and we love good music" ...

  • *DIES LAUGHING* Comedy Gold!

  • I think the french tried to make an american opening theme on their own, because the original was very disappointing, it sounded very poor for such an epic saga.

  • what....the....fuck?!?!? They took a cool opening theme and turned it into some sick and wrong.

  • It's really not bad! Very charming :)

  • Fu%kin hell

  • lol

Dunniest DALLAS opening I have ever heard !

  • Funniest - I mean !

  • Man, that's so wrong.

I can't really tell if it works or not though, because I imagine the real theme while watching those iconic triptych views.

" lol

  • today in France, this music makes much laugh ^^

  • Lol. It's the exact same thing with Prison Break. Instead of the awesome, nerve tingling instrumental they've got some rapper singing the intro.

  • This is funny!! I know the original (American version) didn't have lyrics, so I wonder what the lyrics in this one translate to.

  • basically it's "Dallas, under its implacable sun, glorify the survival of the fittest" quite spiritual...

  • Oh, OK. Thanks. I thought it was a catchy introduction.

  • sounds like Prodigy...

  • A la hillbilly de la Beverly.

  • blue99blue

gee you're original. you post that on every dallas tv youtube video. "Someone needs to take you behind the wood shed and whoop your ass boy!" ;)

The originaltheme is much better. impossible :-(

  • Wouhouuuuuu.

  • I think the theme is done,a bit tasteful for French television standards, can you imagine how the likes of "Star Trek"sounds? You don't want to know, trust me, you don't want to know!

  • damn this theme is funny, i see the humour although the original is much more funky and abeit danceable!!!

  • very tacky indeed!

  • Daaahh-laaaahs

  • omg no, dallas was a classic theme wtf :o

  • Wow, is it true?

  • hell yeah !

  • Aww, I do hope American people are not angry because I am a bit disappointed about the negative reactions. Where is your humour ? To be honest, I really prefer the French version than the American one which is not orignal and funny at all !

Here in France, this song is VERY famous ! When we hear it, it is hard to prevent from laughing because it always does a big comic effect.

"Da-LLAS ! Ton univers impitoyaaAAAaable" XD

  • The theme song from Dallas is very influenced by western opening themes - such as "The Big Country" - this is the core of what United States music is about because it is based on the work of classical music composers like Aaron Copeland. I suposed that's why lot of people dont think its funny.

  • thanks for the info

we laugh about it in france now, but back in the dayz it was loved and praised like no other show

  • This is stupid! I hate dubbing! There's much more than one language in the world for God's sake!

  • is that for real?

  • Weird... :D

  • WTF?

  • Mon dieux...

  • you don't know anything about France so go fuck yourself meathead

  • The subs are swedish though. LOL! XD

  • And that song was (and still is?) an absolute hit in french speaking countries...and everyone knows at least the "Dal-las, ton univers impitoya-a-able" ! :) (you can even heard it in night club...yes yes ! :))

  • what do you know about France? You'd better shut the fuck up ignorant

  • C'était le samedi soir...

  • The original is much better... Or maybe I got used to the English version.

  • It's so sick---> somehow that's why i won't by peugeot:D:D:D

  • et c'est un hongroie qui dis sa xD

  • J'adore

    totalement fan

  • trop trop bon se son ^^

  • I know they did the same thing with Knots Landing but had no idea until now that they'd done it with Dallas. This sounds even worse. It's awful.

  • oh the french cannot be serious - dallas as a chanson? that doesnt work!

  • ha ha ^^ ok, translation :

    Dallas, your pitiless universe,

Dallas, glorifie the law of the strongest, Dallas, and under your sun relentless,

    Dallas, you fear only death...

    Dallas, fatherland of dollar, oil,

Dallas, you do not know pity...

French theme of Jean Renard (September 1980)

  • loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool

  • I didn't know that the show Dallas has a theme song in french. Incredible!!!

  • Dallas, ton univers impitoyable,

Dallas, glorifie la loi du plus fort,

Dallas, et sous ton soleil implacable,

Dallas, tu ne redoutes que la mort...

Dallas, patrie du dollar, du pétrole,

Dallas, tu ne connais pas la pitié...

Thème français de Jean Renard (septembre 1980)

  • Awful, just awful!

  • ...Ton univers impitoyable...

  • lol this is soo funny im loving the back up singers!

  • This theme is so popular in France, we had only 3 TV channels in the early 80's and the whole country was watching this, even President Mitterrand !!!!

  • original is much better. this sucks!

  • This version makes me smile.

  • Even if they have to translate, the music should always stay the original one!

  • Must admit I dont know why they changed from proberbly the greatest theme tune ever. This version seems so cheesey for such a show but its funny.

  • The french only know this french version!

  • Thankyou for your reply. I do prefer the original, However I do like this version, I think it is a cheerful and happy tune. I did not mean to cause offence with previous comments. Regards endale2

  • I think I like this version better then the original.
