I've grown up playing gospel on the Hammond and learned from older school players. Some of them were incredible organists. Lenny Dee has such a "one-ness" with the organ. It's almost like the Hammond is an extension of his mind. Somehow he just had crazy control over the sound of the instrument. It was putty in his hands.
i was looking for the ny hardcore dj. this weirded me out so bad... i feel like i just got my mind molested by a 1920s barber... or something... i dont even know who i am anymore... i feel so... lost
I'd love to see some of your files of Lenny Dee posted. I have enjoyed the few that are on here. There were a lot more before Youtube deleted them due to copyright infringement. I was greatly influenced by Lenny Dee in my organ playing career.

Thanks for posting this. Probably the biggest influence in my music, long before I discovered Elton and the Beatles. Still have some of his Vocalion and Decca releases on vinyl. Little Green Apples and Down South (both Decca) are my favorites.
Thanks for you comments. Like you in high school when all my friends were listening to the Beach Boys and the Dave Clark Five I had Lenny spinning on my turntable.
I've seen lots of Lenny Dee albums at thrift stores, but never paid any attention to who he was. Now I want to hear more and more of him. Great rendition of Bye Bye Baby.
I'm glad to hear it went to someone that would appreciate it...hopefully! That is a piece of organ history! I had heard he loved the B3000. thanks for the info!
I saw him play it in the early 1970's at The Neil House Hotel in Columbus, Ohio...He was the greatest!!! Never forget it. Glad we have all these wonderful recordings.
A friend of mine said he sold it to someone in the bay St Petersburg area. He began to favor the electronic Hammond B-3000 that was built by the real Hammond Organ Company on West Diversey Ave in Chicago.
Like his style of music or not, he was one of the greatest Hammond players of all time. I was introduced to Lenny Dee's music by my father as a child and I learned a lot by listening to his albums and mimicing his technique. I played B3 in a blues band for a while and when I played, I always thought WWLD? (What Would Lenny Do?) I know what he'd do: tell a few dirty jokes and then play some kick ass organ!
He was one of the first Hammond organists I ever listened to. To this day, I find him fascinating and keep finding new reasons to why he remains a favorite.
Very nice tribute to a great player! Lenny will never be matched! Nice collection of pictures. I wished I could have seen him at his St. Petersburg club before he passed on. Thanks for posting this!

The music of Lenny Dee is 1000 times better than most of today's pop music.

I suddenly have a vision of a late night lounge show with Lenny and Rusty Warren doing their stuff. What would that be like?

He was not only a master at the Hammond but his creativity and showmenship placed him well above all the others.

The most inventive organ stylist ever,
Lenny Dee He deserved so much more credit than he was ever given. This modest man
was a magician when it came to playing the Hammond Organ. There will never be a sound like his again.
