  • i don't know whether anyone else mentioned this but you are SO wrong. OSX has been 64-bit since leopard, you don't have to press anything to enable x64 as it's 64 bit ONLY with support for 32-bit software. The change with Snow Leopard is that all native applications have been completely recoded to x64

  • @j800r google Mac OS X Snow Leopard —

Booting into 64-bit mode its what im talking about.

  • @nx2overide you can't run 64-bit apps in a 32-bit environment. look at your running processes and you'll see many of them are 64-bit. Leopard and Snow Leopard are 64-bit operating systems (only) with support for 32-bit legacy apps.

  • @j800r While Mac OS X version 10.6 ships with a number of 64-bit native applications, the kernel itself defaults to "32-bit", unless the user holds down the "6" and "4" keys during boot time, at which point the 64-bit kernel is loaded. Only Apple's X-Serve products, using Snow Leopard Server, boot into a 64-bit kernel by "default".

  • @J800r Not sure if after appying updates this feature is set to default to 64 bit if the processer supports it, but right out of the box its not... 32-bit EFI chipsets are in alot of older Imacs and they dont suport 64 bit processing at all.. hence they wouldnt be able to run Leopard if it was loading a 64 bit kernal "true 64 bit "and thats why it loads by default a 32 bit Kernel.

  • @j800r sounds like the 64 bit versions of Vista and 7 in regards to being a 64 bit OS that runs 32 and 64 bit software. I wonder how OSX ( OSXI?) Lion will be since OSX SNow Leopard looks pretty good.

  • Why are you using vmWare any how?

I've been using Linux Ubuntu for years, and I use VirtualBox it's free...

I like VirtualBox way better than vmWare .

  • @maw88ify I have used Virtualbox its ok.. I just perfer VMware.

  • @nx2overide The new virtualbox can virtualize Mac OS now, and as far as I know you can't do that in vmWare with out hacking it. So in VirtualBox 3.2 you can run Mac OS inside other OSes ...

  • @maw88ify ahhhh. "damn" didnt know that.. thanks for the info... going to download it tonight!

  • @nx2overide so did you get it to work ? ...

I found that a hack iDenbe of Mac OS seem to install way faster...

That's because it's hacked I now have Windows 7, Mac OS Snow Leopard, and PC-BSD running inside Linux Ubuntu.... hahaha ... Tell me if you need any help bud...

  • @maw88ify were did you DL the hack I cant get my version to load I keep getting errors.

  • @nx2overide Google "iDeneb 1.6 Lite Edition Pirate Bay" that should do the trick... :)

Next look up a youtube video called "Mac OS X 10.5.8 on Virtualbox 3.2.4 Part 1" ...

It's the easiest way to do it... After you get it working you can look around for other version if you want...

  • I'm going to correct you one one thing. The Kernel is 32 bit by default, the rest of the OS is 64 bit (and 64 bit apps will run).

My experience is sill some bugs, but at 10.6.3 it's now stable enough. Prior to that it isn't the most stable. I had a similar experience with Leopard.

  • I use transmission. Goes really quick for me and is pretty customizable.

  • what program do you use to download your torrents nx2overide? I use utorrent but I am wondering if there is a better program that you know of.

  • @TearsOfWar1 same here :)

  • you weren't going to buy it? So what were you going to do? Download it from a Torrent site? - LOL

  • @scorbing u can do that, i do torrents to but i didnt no u can download an operating system

  • yes you can torrent operatin systems.. i usually torrent them to try them before i buy them.

  • does osx snow leapard do anything to iMovie? because thats what im going to start using for my vids.. but i dont wanna buy it if it like messes it up... but does it maybe add better software for movie editing? need some help if any1 knows

  • It doesn't make Imovie any better. its just the os. iLife09 has the newest version of imovie.. has some pretty good upgrades but if you got a mac.. i suggest using final cut.. even express is way better.

  • You are hilarious.

    Thanks for the entertainment.

  • a few bugs BUT it was ok

  • i have a pc and i wish i know just half of what u know about pc's.

  • I just bought snow leopard, and i was very excited to install it. When i tried, it apparently couldn't use my mac HD to install it on. When i called in, they said it was a faulty disc. I got a new one, tried it, only to find that my cd drive was broken. I sent it in for repair, got it back today, and the drive works. But I still have the same install error, even with the new disc. They don't know how to fix it. I've decided to give up on it.

P.S. If you use final cut, does it run better now?

  • Deucin' Owt!

  • I upgraded, had a few minor problems that I sorted out.

Photobooth effects did not work properly and kept crashing...went into menu/getinfo and clicked the box for 32bit mode, that sorted out the problem as there are still bugs in the 64bit mode.

I reverted back to QuickTime Pro that I had already bought, it has more features and preferences the new one does not have, video quality no different from what I can see.

I expected a few bugs, there always is in new system software.

  • Lol. I reinstalled XP on my mom's PC a week or so ago and it took over 12 hours.

  • Cool. Glad it worked out. I am going to be changing my OS soon when Windows 7 comes out. I get a free upgrade. =)

My new computer has 8gb of ram and I am loving it so far. I am a bit nervous about the upgrade though but I have heard good things about it and Vista stinks so far. =)

  • Have u tried Win 7 RC ?? Is it the same compared to the retail one which you will be getting from ur PC Manufacturer ??

  • anyone wanna give me a mac???

  • no, i keep my mac xD

  • i love my mac. i would run into a burning building for my mac, my camera, and my hard drives. haha let's hope it never comes to that. i think macs are the closest we have to artificial intelligence. i can't afford this yet, but maybe someday. excellent review, my friend. very thorough.

  • i would do the same for my systems and cameras.

  • nah I have not had any issues. You always back up your system but you know this already. I have it on my imac and macbook pro and no problems at all. Runs nicely and quicktime si amazing.

Stay safe online and in the real world.

  • I have to agree the new quicktime ownz

  • dude you gotts a room painted green use it. Your cool and you have good info, but I know you have the mental capasitiy to not be boring as shit. Spark it up you got potential to make an awesome channel and when you do just remeber the community. Look forward to your next vid.

  • Great review you cleared up a lot! You should work for CNet! lol <3

  • LOL Thanks

  • i have OSX 10.5 lol

  • LOL

    *COUGH*legit*COUGH*

  • Was it a clean install?

  • no i just did an upgrade. I didnt want to reinstall everything.

  • You taught me that it gives you QT Pro. I don't think anyone pointed that out. Me, i still have it but most of the apps I "found in the street" I don't see any updates for in the back alleys yet.

  • Good video... and dannyscam in the background! :P

  • lol yep i was watching his videos lol

  • If you could get any new Mac to edit video and record music which one would it be.

  • I want another iMac 24-inch : 2.66GHz 8 gigs of ram 1.0TB Serial ATA Drive but they aren't cheep. my latest build on apples page was $2,599.00 because i already own all the video editing software. I have always been a pc guy but when editing video.. there no comparison. Mac owns .. if your Gaming PC owns.

  • I was looking at one at BestBuy and I really liked the 24 but did not care for the keyboard. Ive yet to find a software on my PC that works video editing well. I have a 1.6 Duel Core Processor with 2 Gigs of ram and a 512K video card and it still drags when editing video the only thing I can edit without buffering issues using Movie Maker which is easy but the effects are pretty limited.

  • yep i know what you mean i bought new dell xps430 with 8 gigs of ram 2.5GHz Intel Core 2 Quad running adobe premiere and aftereffects cs3 but i don't edit video with it cause it drags.. as i have buffer issues with it too. Records audio like a champ though M-Audio Audio Delta 1010

  • I record on a 1999 Dell 1Gig Pent III with 500MB of ram running Windows 2000 recording with Cubase LE with the no Audio card just whats on the Motherboard and I can go 18 tracks wide without a problem its pretty cool because it was a freebie but running Fruity Loops 8 it starts having latancy problems about 10 Tracks out.

  • nothing wrong with that freebies are great i have an older 1 gig i use for acid and i have Cubase LE on there but i don't use it much.

  • I bought 3 or 4 versions of cakewalk, Magic X and Acid and always had problems navagating .CubaseLE is perfect for people who survived the 80's with a couple less brain cell's than they started with.

  • i can agree with you there a lot of the newer audio programs have quite the learning curve.

  • good review man im not a mac user but have been thinking about getting one to see what all the fuss is about anyway peace out and keep safe

  • can i put mac on a old windows machine?

  • There is a patch that will allow you to run "leopard". I don't know of anyone getting snow leopard to run but i haven't researched it either... i have heard it runs like crap on a pc though..its kinda buggy. I'm so ready for microcrap to release & so i can get Vista off my pc.

  • no ..if you have older machines try ubuntu linux.

  • Hey, I'm think about getting Leopard, but you said you backed up everything on your computer before doing so. Is this a necessary step? Because my portable hard drive broke a few months ago, and I don't have the money to get another one right now.

  • Well being a network manager and for me the lost of any data is not a good thing. I myself would say Def 100 % Yes make a Time machine back up at least. i did both made a time machine back up and dumped all my video to other portable drives... I have heard a lot of horror story's about upgrades and ot on macs but on servers i could tell you a few..lol data back up is key in any upgrade of an OS.

  • Alrighty, thanks.

  • Not bad at all.
