@MrYeayeayeayeayeayea 2 stroke uses gasoline mixed with 2 stroke oil and has no valves in the cylinder head. It uses reed valve between carb and cylinder ports and has expansion chamber exhaust pipe the somewhat regulates powerband /fuel flow. 4 stroke runs on gasoline and has intake and exhaust valves in the head with 4 cycle combustion process, intake compression power and exhaust strokes.
I have to agree with wrenchinremo, starting that with a sports trainer is self punishment, I've only ever dared to do it with a motocross boot securely strapped to my foot first.
Man, You are INSANE! I have stayed up all night being entertained by your vids! I'm beat but have a big grin on my face. Really? left footed with a tennis shoe on! How sick is that. No rubber cushion on the kicker. Those comp release levers are awesome, wished they all had them. left side starters are a bitch to start when cold, wrong foot and high on the engine. but work fine when warm. YOU ARE A STUD!!! It's so cool how they set the port timing on those big bores, my '80 495 chugs low too
I like my air cooled 430wr Husqvarna just fine. Sure I would buy a ktm sx 250 if I had the money but my street legal bike has never over heated in traffic. I think alot of it has to do with how rich you run. Excesss fuel cools the combustion chamber so water cooled bikes prolly get better mpg... just my 2cents
Nope. Even water cooling is air cooled, air has to pass onto those rads so if you're going slow your bike can still overheat. I like air cooling better because you can actually blow up faster with waterc. A friend of mine had one of his hose clamps come off and he didnt know. bike slowly leaked out all the coolant. Then without any warning just blew up. Just another thing to worry about. If any bike overheats you have problems doesnt matter if its air or liquid
There are advantages and disadvantages to both and watercooling is more prone to error (more moving parts, etc.) Yes, closer tolerances but who cares if you are trail riding. Also who cares if you are running a big bore, maybe out of a baby bike you can squeeze some more power but a 500? Even if you do you wont notice it, an 81 Maico 490 eats a new KTM 525 on the drag. Air cooling is less complex and less prone to error in the woods.
@tobyeo There's a lot to be said for simplicity. I love my bike but a cooling leak has rendered it useless and I am thankful I was not left stranded in the woods. No water woes with a maico 490. As you said, the power is so ridiculous, it's not like you need to "tweak" more out of it, ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!
dude i love your bike, but on the internet its been saying that 1982 and 83 that they were maico's worst years that the shocks were real bad and the gears shredded easly is that true?
The guy who owned the bike before me raced it and it won some races. Search on maico spider 1 you can see him riding this bike and I have a lot of videos on the bike. If it was going to fail would definately have already.
After 20 years any of the bad bikes have already failed.
The 82 shocks break but you can put aftermarket shocks on, I have fox shox on my 82.
The 83 Maico 490 is the most bad ass beast to walk the earth. You have to have balls to even attempt to ride this pirate of a bike. But yes, manufacture quality and materials were poor in the the early 80s. The shocks had to be put on by force with brass mallets. Early yet hardly tested single shock design had some bad issues. Gear shifting can be rough at times, but possitive shifting. I owned an 83 250, that kicked the shit out of brand new rice rockets. It would piss of my rich friends.
cool! my neighbour owned one of these back in the late eighies. he let me ride it down a meadow when I was 14y/o weighing about 60kg, and it was like hell broke loose. one of the most impressing moments of my youth, close to loosing virginity ;-)
i had 78 twin shock that waz hard work from cold but a good bike wen it got goen that bike of yours looks nice and looken at it is makeing me want another one
This bike I can start easily now (as long as it's not flooded) and once it's going it starts real easy. This is when i first got the bike. Has a choke, but if I put it on a bike stand it just won't start so I just lean it against the wall and starts right up. My 82 on the other hand is impossible to start. no choke though, need to find a good method of starting that one every time yet.
Nine years on the same piston rings it must have the compression of a flat bottle of coke I have not rebuilt this bike since I got it last year but having all new parts in it mkes it better and more like new so not a bad thing to rebuild thats weird the shifter is on the right, my honda and maico both have the shifter on the left
@Master7770 The kick levers were never on the left side either, the first open class Honda was a CR450R (430cc) back in '81. Had a powerband like a light switch, full on or off. been that way ever since, shifting and kicking that is. they did mellow and broaden the powerband over the yrs. He is full of CRAP!
@71HondaForLife No Honda ever had the gear selector (shift lever) on the right side! A mid sixty sportster did though, you are High!!!! or maybe you are sitting on it backwards???
I would say so, top speed is a different story. I would like sometime to take both to a drag strip and see what they do. Usually, 500 MX bikes are geared at 75MPH, however you can change the sprockets and go faster (if the bike can pull it). The Maico is a 4 speed and there are two differen gearings, I believe mine is the faster one of the two gearings for 4th gear.
(faster of the two maico gearings, not comparing to the CR500). The Sand Spider, which is the same engine but has a much wider transmission ratio stock goes to around 95MPH; however it has enough horse power to be geared even higher and pull off speeds around 112 to 115 that I have heard. The only bike known to out accellerate a Maico and pull more horses is the KTM 495. The 81 was geared high and was able to pull 123 MPH (fastest known stock bike).
Of course, you can always do performance modifications to the motor to get better performance, change sprockets like I mentioned for higher speeds or higher torque, it all depends. Overall though, the Maico has a much wider powerband (only beaten by the KTM 495) that is more 4 stroke like power, right off the idle. You don't have to use the clutch on the trails as you do the CR500, from almost a dead stop you can nail it and it won't bog.
Yes, this bike is a bit easier to kick, especially with the compression release. Once warmed up, starts first kick very easily using the compression release.
However, I like the sound of the Maico a lot better than the CR and the powerband is not only much wider but the bike has a lot more power in the low end and accellerates faster.
I think that the 1985 CR500 sounds a lot better than the 86 does.
I doubt it has any more power in the low end than an 85 cr500 but its nice to have a compression release. Also when on my 85 CR there is no clutch work needed riding tight trails as this motor is like a tractor but it does sign off a little quick.
I haven't ridden the 85 CR500 (the comment above was referring to the 86 CR500 I have), but with the 86 it's a typical japanese powerband, short and in the top end. You need to give it a lot more gas and clutch it to start off than the Maico.
I have heard that in 85 they moved the powerband into the bottom end on the 250s and it cut off quick, didn't know they did the same with the 500.
This bike doesn't idle and the other day I decided I wanted to make the bike idle so I had to turn the cable up. Then I found out that you can't have this bike idle. When it idles, you can pop the clutch and the bike just goes. If you let off the gas the bike doesn't stop, it will keep pulling for a bit, so was too dangerous to have the bike idle, I have to hold the gas on a little bit anytime I stop or pull in the clutch basically because the clutch is also real grabby.
The compression release makes it easier on this bike, it fires up real easy using it.
Honda put kickers on the left for their 250s starting in 78 (because of the Husqvarna 250CR had the kicker on the left, so they did the same because of that bike) and they kept them on the left for the bigger 250 and up through to 84 I believe.
@scott85500 Not more power, More torque. Huge difference, Asian bikes have tons of HP but they are MX bikes, (hence the CR designation) they are ported and tunded for acceleration and thrust, with very quick revving, light flywheels. You need to throw a leg over one of the old Euro 500's to appriecate the "pull your arms out of their sockets" torque. CR500's are great bikes, I'd buy a Service Honda aluminum frame CR500 if I had unlimited funds. I'll keep all 6 of my big Huskies instead!
dunno about the 500's, but i know my cr480 has a hell of a lot of bottom end...that thing could climb a tree lol. its got pretty good gearing too (5 speed transmission). i had a kawasaki F9 350 with a speedometer and i did 75 MPH on it from one end of my road to the other (not topped out) and my 480 picks up a LOT quicker than that thing...i was in about mid 4th when i reached the end. based on the kawasaki, i'd say i was doing about 85-90, but thats only an estimate. id love to see what itll do
I could calculate an estimate of the bike if I look up the gearing. What I mean by bottom end is that unlike any jap bike I've ever ridden (I haven't riden the 480 tho), they usually do not like to slow down to an idle, they usually will stall out. The Maicos have a 4 stroke like power band, I can go to a complete bog where you would think the bike would stall, gun it and the front end will come up.
lol i know what you mean...i have a newer cr250 thats like that. the 480 stalls pretty damn easy...it was a bitch to get used to lol between the constant stalling and trying to kick it over effectiveley i almost sold it...im glad i didnt though. once you get used to it you dont lose it. its like...riding a bike lol
@HondaRiderCR250 Put some flywheel weights on, adds mass to the effect of the crank shaft, way less prone to stalling. if you weren't right on the clutch lever timing wise, that damn thing was dead instantly! they had a high kickstart lever also, be proud that you didn't sell it. let strangers ride it, but make sure you get some cash for the new rear fender they will ruin when they flip it over, before they hop on! Great open classers, but alas, Huskies still Rule the dez.
My CZ 250 has a hell of a kick I use Maxum 926 syn at 32 to 1 I must say Tobyeo you have one awesum kick on that side of bike. my CR 500 ( 1987 ) is my baby see videos on czmxrider see ya
My 86 CR500 is out of commision right now. The clutch quit working and found that it was the push plate and rod. The push plate was cracking so I bought a new one, noticed the rod was eaten up so I got a new one and a push piece. However, the rod is stuck in the motor somehow so need to split the cases to fix it now. I also noticed that one crank bearing and the mainshaft bearings are bad, so might as well replace those while I'm doing this. I ride the maico right now so not in a hurry yet
The basket and everything is brand new. According to the docs and other sources, the rod is supposed to just fall out. I have the new rod, and in my new rod there's nothing that bolts to it and no holes in it. However, that doesnt mean that someone did do something like that to rig up the rod from the previous owner. It can move forward only so far before it gets stuck. Could be a burm or something wore into it. I filed down needle nose vice grips and couldn't pull it out.
I was thinking of putting the screw in there but didn't want to get metal shavings in the motor. The needle nose vice grips (I filed down top and bottom to fit in the hole) had a big grip on it and couldn't pull it out it would eventually slip off. The casing bearings are bad anyway, so if I pull it apart I will be replacing the crank bearings and the clutch bearing.
It may have once or twice. The Cr500 has more kick back and it has kicked back only a few times though. usually both bikes just start up.
I picked up something called "Super M Racing Formula" (I didn't see any wolf's head like I used to run in my older bikes). I run 92 Octane + Octane Boost + 30:1 (~4.25 ounces/gallon) oil premix in both bikes. I would run 32:1 in smaller bore bikes. I also use BR8EIX plugs in both bikes.
That thing has some serious compression hu?

This comment has received too many negative votes show
water cooled engines are better cause they
run at more of a constant temperature so the parts expand and contract at a constant rate.
This also allows for closer tolerances, that is, for the parts to fit closer together, so they don't wear as quickly. air cooled is gay!

There are advantages and disadvantages to both and watercooling is more prone to error (more moving parts, etc.) Yes, closer tolerances but who cares if you are trail riding. lol i know what you mean...i have a newer cr250 thats like that. the 480 stalls pretty damn easy...it was a bitch to get used to lol between the constant stalling and trying to kick it over effectiveley i almost sold it...im glad i didnt though. once you get used to it you dont lose it. its like...riding a bike lol

I ride the maico right now so not in a hurry yet

maybe a long drywall screw or something will fit in there to get a hold of the push rod?
never seen one busted ,and stuck in there b4
mine ate my basket up -lol the cr500 are tough on clutch baskets, and me ridin the hell out of them doesnt help either lol

Great video. Has the motor kicked back yet? What oil are you running?
