I love the original score by the Barrons. Goldsmith's score (which employs cues from his unused score for John Huston's film of Sigmund Freud from 1962) works quite well here, but it overpowers. But kudos for the experiment, lordhebe! I see that others got cunty when replying to this video.
The string music in the background of "Forbidden Planet" was reused in "2001: A Space Odyssey", as background to the exterior shots of the Discovery as it moves toward Jupiter. It just doesn't sound similar... it's quite definitely the same music.
Amazing how they will have conquered weightlessness in 2200... That dress should be flying up and over that gals head.....exposing her galactic bloomers...
The original soundtrack is an absolute classic (the first ever completely electronic score to a Hollywood movie), and hasn't aged a bit! I'm sorry but this a daft experiment that doesn't work for me....
The original soundtrack is an absolute classic (the first ever completely electronic score to a Hollywood movie), and hasn't aged a bit! What a daft idea!
Gene Roddenberry pretty much aknowleged that FP influenced Star Trek heavily. George Lucas did NOT aknowledge ripping off Dune which is why he nearly got sued.
What a classic flick! Truly one of the great sci-fi films of all time. And that Anne Francis was such a HOT babe in it! Hubba hubba to the max, daddy-o! But even her daddy, Dr Morbeus, couldn't answer that query that even stumped Einstein: ARE THERE RINGS AROUND URANUS???
I prefer the original soundtrack. It was among the first all electronically synthesized soundtracks ever created for film. Something of a landmark in film sound editing.
Fair enough, I admit that the original soundtrack certainly added a huge deal to the atmosphere of the film, and Forbidden Planet would not be Forbidden Planet without it.
It's just, after a while, the constant use of a very repetitive soundtrack became tiresome personally, which spoiled the film slightly for me. (I still love it to bits)
I just wanted to see how the film would work with a more conventional score.
Personally, I found the original soundtrack not to be a flaw, but rather, musically revolutionary. No other movie had done an electronic soundtrack, and the musicians did a great job with self-made equipment. Plus, the ambient tune/vibe is very atmospheric and just fits it well.
As far as your rendition, it's not bad...but I'd still take the original any day :-)
You are correct Milleneans. Not sure how Earl Holliman fits into sci-fi though. At any rate, Outer Limits, Twilight Zone spawned Lost in Space, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Time Tunnel, which spawned Star Trek.
sounds like 2001 music as well - interesting - Bebe and Louis Barron with their work on the original soundtrack got me started on appreciating electronic music.
This film was the groundwork for all science fiction space movies to follow. It touches every base. It explained the craters that scientists believed to be on Mars, the Krell having been on our planet long before us... intricate in every detail. Leslie Neilsen was never in a space movie of this kind after this one.
But it's an experiment, can't people bloody see that??? I am not trying to replace the original, that version is going to be the one availible on DVD or however you watch your movies, whereas this version is only availible on YouTube. I thought it would be interesting to see what the film would be like with a more recent soundtrack, so I made this video, then I put it on YouTube, and get crucified by idiot fanboys like you for daring to think that the film might not be perfect in every way.
No Not a transporter. It was the DC unit or the DeCelerator unit they get into. It puts them into a kind of stasis field(Sort of like a transporter maybe)but they don't move. This allpws them to decelerate from a very high speed to slower speed quickly without experienceing the killer G forces.Ya I'm a geek.
This is not meant to be a video of Forbidden Planet, it's an experiment with the music. Mabye it would be a better idea to watch one of the other hundreds of youtube videos about forbidden planet or even- heaven forbid- watch the dvd?
I'm not trying to replace the original, hence "experiment". Would you rather I had just uploaded scenes from the film? There are enough people who do that, I prefer to do original videos. Go watch the dvd if you want the original version, and stay the hell away from here.
Interesting experiment. Although the music reminded me more of 2001 than Alien. And some of it certainly altered the mood and tone of film somewhat and slightly improved it. But in the end it was same as colorizing and film better seen as originally intended.
I totally agree, this was meant to be an experiment and nothing more. If I was trying to change the film for the better I would have changed the whole film, like "The phantom edit" I don't think so. Unlike the Phantom menace this films theatrical form was just fine. Odd you thought it reminded you of 2001 though, cause this is definitely the music from Alien!
It is from Alien and Aliens, but James Horner admits much of his work was inspired by the classical pieces from 2001 (as is much of the 'look' of the ship in Alien). Listen to the music in 2001 when we first see the 'Discovery' - it's almost the same as the music from the very start of Aliens.
it's really interesting...of course the music is "dated"
However, the original soundtrack was the the first to be completely electronically created...the technology came out of Nazi Germany. I wrote a paper on this subject for my master's thesis in music.
I wouldn't call the music terrible...it's what it is. It had an effect at the time...and you should recognize that it was quite revolutionary. Movies like blade runner followed in it's footsteps.
Forbidden Planet had a terrible soundtrack? Are you serious? If you think Louis and Bebe Barron's groundbreaking electronic score was nothing but "computer generated high pitched squeaks," you need another listen. The tones are incredibly varied and complex. There are different leitmotifs for Robby, the Id Monster, the ship in space, and various moods. And all this was done with custom-designed electronic circuits, not computers per se — remember this was 1956. Clean the wax out of your ears!
I'm sorry but I have to disagree (I changed my brief btw, my original comments were, agreed, a little bit immature) while revolutionary Forbidden planets soundtrack simply does not stand the test of time. I'm not saying that's a bad thing it's just that I found the soundtracks hard to listen too physically as well as it not being great as far as soundtracks go anyway.
Well, I think the Forbidden Planet soundtrack does stand the test of time very well. Had it been scored with conventional chromatic music using traditional instruments, the film would not be the classic it is. That's my opinion, FWIW. And that, as they say, is what makes horse races.
Don't listen to the haters. This is a good mashup, man.

Nice sountrack. Btw, the original weird-sountrack was actually Krell-music -Krell being the alien creatures from the movie.

@Iluthra Absolutely! Separating the original score from FORBIDDEN PLANET is like taking the Bernard Herrmann out of VERTIGO.

Nice experiment; good try!
The sound levels completely overwhelm the dialogue, especially at the end...but, hey that's easy enough to fix.
The closing scene was incomplete without the preceding couple of minutes...but that's ok too.
So long as the original is always there; it's ok to riff off of it imho.
