I get sick of these people saying these trains were cool. You would get dirty and smelly due to the mix or combustion carbon + water. No aircon. MUCH more dangerous because they can't be fit with proper safety systems.
So while they are nostalgic, they are also unsafe, and not suitable for mass transportation.
@lotwyo but there never happen accidents!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! never, only when a car driver thinks that these trains are slow... but they aren't. the whole world was chanching by strains. in a positive way. without steam your house wasn't powered and we didn;t have railways cars and much more. and your car smells to and is dirty. but not on the driver seat and in a coach its also clean. so what did you want to say???
@matthijsspoor3 . That's right, power stations are still steam powered, even nuclear stations! Safety? How about Potters Bar, Morpeth, Carrbridge, and various level crossings? How about signalling? Main-line steam is fitted with the latest, and, we used to test the points every 3 months (British Rail, S & T, 1979), now, they only test them every year. It's called 'saving costs'. Is it 'safer'?
@psychopathy33 in holland and germany all trains on the mainline have to be fitted with the safety system (ATB, PZB90) but unonfortunaly there cutting on everysthing so also on mantainance of trackt!!
@lotwyo . The 'pen-pushers' in London wanted to close the Mallaig 'extension' of the West Highland Railway (in the 1970's, Mallaig to Fort William). Scottish Region (now ScotRail) had other ideas -- they introduced 'The Jacobite' steam train. The line still hasn't been closed.
Main-line steam engines are fitted with the latest signalling devices, otherwise they would not be allowed to run. However, they are too 'labour-intensive' for modern transport -- 3 hours to reach full pressure!
My generation is so deprived of beautiful machines like this. They are ALIVE, they breathe, they make music as they power their way along the tracks. What do we have now....bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz click click click
I see one comment says it hates all high speed rail what a waste? My question is why would you fly if you can stay on the ground and get there just as fast in less time? Maybe Im missing something.
@japsniper007 That is because steam power itself is just graceful. Steam surrounding plainly visible mechanics, working like clockwork, and moving gracefully. Internal combustion engines lack this grace as they are hidden behind a dull cast engine block, almost as if embarrassed to show its workings.
I can't decide which is more beautiful - the engine or the countryside. Hell, I"ve got to go with the engine. That thing would make Afganistan look appealing. As an American, I've got to tip my hat to you guys. If that engine isn't a working piece of art, then I don't know what is. For building a modern-day steam engine, you have my sincere admiration. (God how I loathe diesels).
That engine is soo smooth, it sounds like a jet engine. its a shame we cant get out our stuff together here in America like the dedicated folks who put that masterpiece together
Isnt that just the most glorious sight, steaming across the stunning English countryside. You don't have to be a trainspotter to feel those goosebumps
Nice loco engine. Great video taping - you must have perched up on a good vatage point. Camera was locked on to the engine for a good amount of time. Thanks.
British steam engines are greater than American steam locomotives. Through the Pere Marquatte 1225 had played in the movie" The Polar Express". Through that engine had played in the British hit road TV series " Top Gear: Race To The North."
Instead of building these souless plastic DMU's,they should build a fleet of these to get people to travel by puplic transport..... I mean who WOULDN'T want to travel behind that!!
@blaster2012 I agree with you there; the sight and sound of a steam engine is better than any diesel. See if you can find a video of a PRR K-4s 4-6-2, though. Both of them would be good contenders for that kind of work.
That is an incredible undertaking by the British Railway Enthusiasts to build a brand-new steam locomotive completely from scratch!!! They are probably the only ones in the entire world to do so since the last new steamer was built; probably in the 1960s!
@JD41796 The National Railway Museum at York is a "must see" for any railway enthusiast who comes even remotely within travelling distance of it. And the best thing about it is? FREE ADMISSION!! (for the moment at least) Worth the trip "over the pond" on its own.
The tornado IS rated to 100MPH. I was wondering about that. Found out at the website. By comparison, the UP 844 can pull 26 cars on level ground at 100 MPH and has been timed doing 103.
The neat thing about the Tornado is she's brand new! It will be interesting to see if she will pioneer a return to steam or remain a reminder of the Peppercorn class locomotives. Either way, congratulations to the A1 Trust!

Most of the stuff on the "network" are reliveried tarted up junkers, the majority of its over 30 years old bar the odd one here and there on lines near the "City".Todays mis match of hundreds of piddly operators all trying to get their bit of the pie has made UK rail a joke.Short journeys with multiple train changes all because one length of line has multiple operators! I looked into going from swindon to leicester a while back, the four train changes put me off the taking the train,+vast cost.
@silver760 - I remember some MP calling rail privatisation "the poll tax on wheels" - well the poll tax went but this hotch potch rail system stayed. A friend in paris says SNCF is due to be split up, and look what SNCF has done despite government changes.
Hello Bunjamin27 - hope you enjoyed your stray from Planes. I enjoyed mine to film this sequence using our long lens and extended tracking technique we use for aircraft.
Interesting you mention TrainsTV - we have that name registered too and might well launch a TrainsTV channel
@Bunjamin27 The A1 peppercorn 60163 Tornado is in fact plane related, as it is named after the Panavia Tornado being used by the RAF at the time the name was chosen.
Essentially the Flying Scotsman wwas the basis for this locomotive class. Same company that designed it, though a different chief designer, Peppercorn took on some of Gresley's original calculations and method to design it. They both serve in the same role, and ended up having much of the same upgrades fitted. If you want to see a great jump, look at the Great Western Railway's Castle class, a different company on a similar role, or a different occupation entirely to see a real shift.
Well spotted (or heard). She carries a genuine ex-A4 whistle as well as the correct single-note whistle for her class. The A1 whistle sounds a bit feeble, but the A4 chime whistle sounds bloody fantastic, especially when it goes shrieking past your ear at 75mph.

@IainPlanesTV Great video! Although i have to say that the NYC J1-e Hudson, the PRR K-4 4-6-2 or the N&W J 4-8-4 would be able to give it a run for its money.
I'd like to see a brand-new full size 4-4-0 sometimes, and not just the 1970s ceremonial locomotives that grace the Golden Spike/ Promontory Point monument in Utah.
Will everyone stop arguing who's country's got the bigger dick because it's got better steam trains? It's a beautiful loco. That's all there is to it.
Wonderful stuff. There's something strange about how, with this as-good-as-new steam express loco, we can get a fleeting glimpse of 70 years ago. Look for Top Gear on BBC i-player- there's a fntastic moment at 57:50 where it tears up the Scottish East Coast by the sea. Dramatic and emotional!
train drivers actually have to work in the steam trains as shown on last nights Top Gear, trains of today they just sit there with a few buttons & leavers!
Britain exported many steam locomotives to Australia and most were much larger than the locally used.Companies like North British,Vulcan and Armstrong-Whitworth were producing 225 tonne Pacifics,Mikados and Mountain Types etc for Australian domestic operations and all had fine working lives. Some are still used in steam heritage runs. Naturally Australian conditions varied greatly from that experienced in Gt Britain and larger locomotives were required.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
We Americans desined them " Ugly " for the same reason we Americans signed " The Declaration of Independence " aka the 4TH of July 1776 to be free of Great Britan. If you ask me , why do you have whistles that sound like " Model Toy Trains ' ? American Steam Locomotive Whistles seperate Men from Boys .
Whatever, all a matter of opinion -what is fact is that England is the birthplace (and therefore Britain) gave the world Locomotives -and that includes the USA
When I read this comment, I clicked your name and expected to see the profile of a 14 or 15 year old....but a 53 year old adult making idiotic statements like that? Wow...
Some U.S. steam locos were bigger but there again the distances in your country are far larger and it made (and still makes) sense to have larger trains pulled by bigger engines. We did make larger locos but these went for export, one having been recently returned from South Africa to Scotland where she was built. great big engine that one is :-)
As for "pretty", one of your fellow countrymen commented on an earlier video of Tornado that he felt that U.S. locos seemed to have things "hanging off them all over the place" so I guess there is a measure of agreement there.
Hard for me to comprohend she isn't even a year old, she is beautiful. Strange to think come July she won't be the newest steam locomotive anymore, the Leviathan (a 4-4-0, sister to the Jupiter) will be.
I get sick of these people saying these trains were cool. You would get dirty and smelly due to the mix or combustion carbon + water. No aircon. MUCH more dangerous because they can't be fit with proper safety systems.

nope. America's engines are big that's it. German engines are better.

How boring trains are today compared to this magnificent beast!!

Super-smooth tracking, especially when you've got the locomotive in such a tight box, great job and very well chosen viewpoints too!

Not to offend, here in the USA, our steam engines have deep whistels, why are the ones there more high pitch?
TrainTrackTrav 2 years ago
Just accepted practice I suppose.
ashbytimuk 2 years ago
why are yours deep pitched?
no offence but i think that if a question works both ways then its not really a question.

Well not to be smart, but ours maybe because ours are larger. I will say, there in the UK, you have pretty engines. :-)
TrainTrackTrav 2 years ago
no offence but ive always looked at american steam locos and though "who designed theses there so ugly".
i think deeper pitchs travel for longer distances.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
We Americans desined them " Ugly " for the same reason we Americans signed " The Declaration of Independence " aka the 4TH of July 1776 to be free of Great Britan.

Wow...
dcoursey82 2 years ago
"you designed them ugly to be free of Great Britain? That doesn't make any sense.

Some U.S. steam locos were bigger but there again the distances in your country are far larger and it made (and still makes) sense to have larger trains pulled by bigger engines. We did make larger locos but these went for export, one having been recently returned from South Africa to Scotland where she was built. great big engine that one is :-)
ashbytimuk 2 years ago
As for "pretty", one of your fellow countrymen commented on an earlier video of Tornado that he felt that U.S. locos seemed to have things "hanging off them all over the place" so I guess there is a measure of agreement there.

Hard for me to comprohend she isn't even a year old, she is beautiful. Strange to think come July she won't be the newest steam locomotive anymore, the Leviathan (a 4-4-0, sister to the Jupiter) will be.

Work actually started on the loco around 20 years ago, but it took till recently to put her in steam.

Great footage. It's really showing off the power that's being pushed through the rods. One of the best videos I've seen in a long while.

Loved your long pans - poetry in motion - both the video and the engine!

Super loco, well captured. We also videoed Tornado at Newark but our efforts are not in the same league.
