The party of whoever attacks first gets killed. The first time you goaded Bench, you hit him first, so your party died. The second time, you goaded him but didn't strike first (because you didn't click on him), so he hit you first and HIS party died. All you have to do is taunt him and then refrain from attacking.

Of course, there ARE other ways.
