My boyfriend worked on this film. The man is blind and he is begging for money. He may be meditating, but he is also keeping close track of where he is so he does not get lost.
FANTASTICO .....lo shaolin e' scuola di vita per chi e' sempre alla ricerca di niente e quel niente diventa il tutto .... sol cosi' si annullano le valenze come dovrebbe esser per un normal ragionamento relativistico
The monk is Japanese Zen Buddhist, Just as a friendly correction. I have not seen the whole film but from the parts I saw this was truly amazing. It is one of the most amazing moments I have seen. Its amazing that he is just there in the chaos of Tokyo, oblivious to everything and like you said, aware.
I believe that what this monk is practicing is an altered state of awareness. He is simultaniusly observing his surrounding environment, while observing himself observing the surrounding environment. This is one form of meditation while moving. Notice how delibirately he places his feet while controling the center of balance, the precise ringing of the bell, he is chanting from memory, breathing in a certain way etc...
@trespire i wouldn't say "altered state" of consciousness. walking around unaware, absorbed in thoughts of the past and future is, if anything, the altered state. his state is the natural one
@JimmyJones Quite a lot is going on around us all the time as I tried to describe.There are many things going on around us at all times,& also a lot going on inside of us.The point is how much are we even aware of all this,are we "Sleep Walking" like preconditioned automatons, or do we posses and exercise some degree of choice in how we react to lifes' situations.The monk is traing this ability,which Mankind does NOT usually posses.He is in training,like you do sets of curls for biceps. BR.
His demeanor is his sermon.

what gets me is that everyone is oblivious to his presence. :(

Really cool contrast between the deliberately slow paced monk and the hasteful people around him.

@imixatrixx
Hmm... if that's true then so are most of us on the planet... We are just begging for different things be it attention, money or what have you...

he tries to remember himself

@tokabuxo
I think this training is aimed at controlling your own mind i.e not letting your mind be pulled in by the rushing that's going on around you..
This monk seems to be from Kurama-san which would mean he is not a zen monk.

@trespire Actually, he's just walking and just chanting.

@trespire He is practicing kinhin--just walking. Zen is simple. Simple is best.
