did u read the "tombstones"? if u did, then u should have labeled ur map with numbers in the order of the stone, and follow that order when drawing the hourglass

It doesn't work until you get to the part of the game. After you defeat the Cubis sisters on the ghost ship and go talk to Zaus, he'll tell you about it and THEN you can use the symbol.
