Agreed. The whole movie was awkward. Snyder can't direct a movie like The Watchmen, that's why I like 300 way more, the material is less mature and primal, violent based which is why everyone agrees to enjoy Rorschach's character in The Watchmen, he represents Snyder's interests and strengths as a director the best. But you can't make an ensemble film work off the strength of just one character. I was expecting way more.
I completely agree with you about the movie. I loved the graphic novel so much. And I saw the movie because I heard it was good, and at the very beginning I was so pumped. But than the movie strarted to lose me. One of the main things that bothered me was the music transitions. The songs were completely taking me out of it. It was very upsetting. The movie didn't really need to have "99 Red Balloons" or "All Along The Watchtower" Or worst of all "Hallelujah". I was so excited at the opening of
I have to agree with you. People who are saying the sex scene was awkward on purpose are missing the point. The entire movie was awkward, the music and visuals totally didn't mesh in almost every scene, it wasn't just the sex. At first I thought Rorschach was pretty good too, but the more I thought about it the more I realized that Haley didn't really understand the character. He was playing him more as what fans remember Rorschach as being like than what Rorschach actually was like.
i hated everything about that movie. it sucked. it was pritty pointless. and why was that dam blue guy not wereing pants the hole movie was like that. like no one wants to see that.
what kind of message is it to say its okay to wipe out millions in the name of bringing peace to the world...the movie has new world order?illuminati written all over it
I think the point of that wasn't that it was okay to kill millions. It was that they couldn't reveal Adrian's scheme to the world without setting the whole world back on the road to nuclear war.
And that Rorschach would rather face oblivion than be party to that. It's what made his death poigniant.
I have to admit. The sex scene wasn't emphasized so much in the GN. Heck, some of the violence wasn't emphasized in the GN either (prison scene). If this film where to portray less "comic book flair" to it like TDK did, this could have been another great film of the genre.
Totally agree with you on the sex scene, it was long and awkward, made more awkward by the fact that I was with my girlfriend. I don't agree with you about everything, but you had some good points. Rorschach was perfect, and it seemed like he was a little bit more humanized in the movie.
lol, the sex scene was very cringy but that was the only bad thing in an otherwise amazing movie. I cant believe Haley was the only actor you thought did a good job, Wilson and Morgan were spot on as Owl and Comedian
You missed the point of the sex scene. the awkwardness and the weird song was put there to purposely make you uncomfortable. The GN broke boundaries by making its characters do things you wouldnt normally see in a comic book.
Reading it back in 85' along with the violence would have made some people feel awkward.
Implied sex on film and toned down violence wouldnt have sent the same message since thats what other comic book movies do anyway.
You make a really good point that I hadn't considered about the original sex scene in the graphic novel making people uncomfortable back when "Watchmen" was first released. However, that scene caused that reaction because it was pushing the boundaries of super hero comics (as you mentioned) while the sex scene in the film made people uncomfortable because it was AWFUL. I honestly think it was not awkward by design, but as a result of Zach Snyder's mediocre directing abilities.
Zack Snyder used the parallel of Dr. Manhattan as the cause of the explosions to the use of Albert Einstein and the Manhattan Project, a group started in the early 30's for research on alternate energy, only to later on be the catalyst for atomic bomb, which killed "millions to save billions" in the name or "peace" (to stop the war).
So in that sense, it helps the movie flow along better as opposed to the squid, which like Snyder said, would force you to backtrack to understand.
Then there's the sex scene. Dan was never supposed to be some hung guy or anything. The nudity is shown in the GN shows you his imperfections.
The movie purposely uses that song (as opposed to the Billy Holiday one) which is about sex to make it more uncomfortable for the viewer ON PURPOSE.
It wasnt supposed to arouse or impress the viewer. It was supposed to be awkward, as that isnt typically shown in Comic movies & is like the GN in 85', a shock to the viewer.
All in all, yeah... there are a couple of parts that I could nitpick away at, but all in all, to have to reduce the film down to just under 3 hours and still include as much depth as they did was incredible.
I'm going back to the theater to watch it again & will buy the DVD.
I'm sorry, I should have been more clear when I said "sex scene" -- I was referring to the successful sex scene on the airship, not the attempt at sex that happened on the couch. I agree that the bit where Dan can't get an erection was spot on, but I couldn't deal with the successful sex scene that happened later because of the ridiculous music and the excessive nudity. It felt over-the-top to me.
Okay, I can agree with that. I think they were trying to emphasize the flaws in their personalities. As ordinary people, they couldn't connect... but bashing and brutalizing others got'em hot & bothered and made them feel like gods.
Still, yeah. It was over the top and got people laughing in my theater.
The only other thing was that I hated Goode as Ozymandias. I thought he was horribly miscast. I know they were aiming for an Alexander the Great look, but it just didn't fit

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
I'm so sick of arguing with people who claim it was true to the book.
They turned Dan+Laurie's relationship into a big sex joke
I agree with the actor who played Rorschach, but that character suffered more than any other from the cuts made.
great review!

The sex scene was awkward because it was awkward in the comic. I thought that it was fairly close to the original intent of the comic.
Perhaps it was how we came into the theater. I heard a lot of bad reviews so I walked in not expecting much while you had the opposite experience.
I thought it was incredible.
