We live 15 minutes from Fruita,Colorado, in Grand Junction, and heard about Mike the Headless Chicken Festival, but didn't hear the full story behind it. Definately gonna check it out next year,RIP Mike!:)

i thought it was george? or atleast theres a story about a headless chickin called george cuz i remember there being a site about it an he used to sleep with his well what would of been his head under his wing

As far as I can tell, although the sources aren't great, the chicken survived for two years IN TOTAL (birth to death). He spent 18 months of that without a head, hence the slight inaccuracy in the QI video.

The farmer claimed to have sold the chicken (surely with the name Mike, it's a rooster, so is chicken the right word?), rather than admit he was dead, and hence the long-running urban myth that Mike lived for four years.

@hansellius yes I believe they are all chickens but males are called roosters or cocks and females are called hens. as far as I know.

@RowrTiger Ahh, righto. I knew the hen / rooster terminology, obviously, but I wasn't certain if calling a rooster a chicken was correct. Makes sense though, considering other animals (for instance, pig: sow, boar) it makes sense.
