Nice cover! I will give you a tip! Chris plays everything one octave higher and puts an octaver effect, so he has a more fat and bright sound at the same time! you can see it in my channel if you want! great cover! im looking foward to get that muff soon!
I hadn't heard this song in a very long time, and I enjoyed very much listening to and watching you play! Nice job! Keep it up! How long had you been playing when you made this cover?!
If you watch this clip from the Abbey Road session, you can see he's actually playing on the D string instead of the A string. I haven't tried this myself yet - I'm pretty sure it won't sound right without an octaver, as I said earlier
Petervite is right, you need to be playing F# instead of F.
KosmicFlux - I've been trying to study how Chris plays this - unfortunately, even his bass playing skills can't get the bass player more camera time. From the videos I've seen, it looks like he would play it sliding up to the 11th fret, and that sounds more appropriate. I say "would" because I'm pretty sure he plays it higher up and uses an octaver to drop the pitch.
As for the "Pick vs Fingers" debate I personally think that many people use a pick because it's easier to learn, then they get used to it and find it easier to just keep using it.
I'm converting the bass from guitar and using a pick would definitely be easier, but I want to learn to play bass how it should be played so I'm gonna put in the extra effort. It'll be worth it in the end!
Hey Man, nice job. You could save yourself a bit of effort by using the D string on fret 6 instead of sliding up to fret 11. I'm not sure how Chris does it but I guess it depends on what tone you prefer.
one should try to be good at both using a pick (plectrum) and also in using fingers but playing with fingers would allow quicker playing..whilst the picking allows thicker punchy tones
well im not sure about that maybe its personal preference in picking.. sometimes one can pick really fast with a plectrum sometimes the other way around but most players who play fast that i know of are finger players
Ive been playing electric for years and got a bass today and should I be using my fingers instead of a plectrum? I can't really see the difference and Im much quicker and accurate with a plectrum so should I continue using it? Awesome cover btw (Y)
Use what eer is more confortable. Pick or fingers are just two different techniques - like the different ways u can hold a pick when playing guitar/bass. Some songs may sound better with one or the other but as long as your playing it and enjoying it it doesnt really matter. use what you want and feel better with regardlesss of what any one says :)
if Chris Squire was a good bassist, he wouldnt need a pick. plus picks give the bass a different sound. basses sound much smoother when played with the fingers.
You don't play bass to play with the right technique, you play bass to produce a cool sound. Doesn't matter if it's with a pick or with your fingers.
And as you might have noticed, this song doesn't have a smooth bass line. I think it sounds better when you play this song with a pick, and put some overdrive on top of it. Just to get that raw bass sound!
great sound and great cover... ive been playin bass for some time now...(about an year).. just wanted to tell u that he originaly plays a bit lower..i mean on the 14,16,13 fret... same stuff only bit lower..and gives some kind ofa better sound..i mean closer sound to what he plays :)) nice cover thou:)
don't you meann higher up the neck? lower is towards the machine heads not the pickups. and the only way u can realy play staright around the 14,16,13 is by using an octave pedal. which from the floors of it the player doens't have.
really good cover :) i noticed you stretch out your fingers a lot when playing, it helps to try to keep them as close to the fretboard as possible though, it increases your accuracy ten fold. And, speed is a by product of accuracy so in turn you get alot faster as well :)
Thanks for the feedback, guys! I've been meaning to update this vid for awhile - yeah, the transitioning could be wayy better! I'm using a Squier Vintage-Modified Precision Bass (great bass for the price) and a Big Muff pedal for fuzz distortion.
nice cover... i can play the same song but i jst put overdrive on... sounds good enough. was gd enough for me but id say try and make your changes onto the 'A' string quieter. apart from that gd work
nice cover dude if i was gunna criticize u (which really you were amazing) i would say your transaction -changing string goes off a bit durring the song so you can make it a smoother change
very nice, love the sound, but you said any tips so ill give my 2 cents i noticed, from what i saw you played it spot on, except i BELIEVE, not 100% but probabally 90%, that the main riff, at the end of it, it goes (on the A string) it goes 7, 6, 7, 9, not 7, 6, 7, 8. I hope that makes sense, and if im wrong, sorry but i think thats right, keep it up :)
Try to learn it by ear, it'll be worth it in the end - trust me! It's pretty simple to isolate the notes in this song, so just match up each note on your bass with the one you're hearing in the song.
u need some synth..

@magicgd make sure to take breaks and those blisters will turn to calices. Believe me, using your fingers gives an entirely different sound.

there is so much more you can do with your fingers. a pick is just a substitute for acquiring skill.

fingers go much faster. listen to victor wooten, or steve harris, or even the flea. you can go MUCH faster with fingers.

for a bass i would have thought finger picking was faster, unless u used a thin plectrum but u cant really cause its a bass
colashanacogh 2 years ago
This completely depends on which technique you train. When playing with a pick it's easier to play fast, but you can go just as fast with picking.
