He was originally an indentured servant for a merchant but later became a successful tobacco farmer. He "owned" 5 indentured servants, after a fire destroyed most of his plantation he contested the freedom suit to keep his indentured servant, John Casor, for life and won. So technically an indentured servant kept for life is a "slave".
