i think if ever we humans get attacked by aliens and win, we should have a world wide anthem and call it human anthem cos by that time we will have colonized other planets we wont just have earth so we cant call it earth anthem but we could call it our worlds anthem but i digress.
i supose after just having a very right wing facist government the spanish were fealing pritty unpatriotic. i don't like patriotism myself i think its to close to racism (thats why i can't stand americans) but i love the bit about crushing the scots
Without the context the dutch national anthem might seem a bit strange. Let me explain; you should listen to the song as if it were said by William of Orange. I am William of Orange, from German Decent. So that first part makes sense. By the part in which he says 'I've pledged my loyalty to the King of Spain', he means that this is not a war that he wanted, but a war that must be done. He is not against the king, but against the way he reigns in Holland.
The Dutch national anthem not only states that William of Orange pledged his loyalty to the Spanish king (which he did, at some point), but also that he is of German descent (which he was). And the princedom of Orange (which gave him his title) actually lay in France. No question of being to 'nationalistic' here, is there!
Got to correct you at that remark. We don't sing 'van Duitse bloed' (translated: of German blood(line))
The real anthem says that we are from Duitschen blood. Duitschen was the nickname, given by the Dutch themself to their people. So Duitschen = Dutch, Nederlands.
So we don't sing that we are originally Germans (but the royal family are descendants of a German bloodline).
@Wicked1506 Our (Dutch) royal family is indeed a descendant of the German bloodline but there isn't a single drop of Dutch blood in their pedigree. The first king Willem I was married to a German woman. His son was married to the sister of the tsar so Russian blood. His son again was married to a German. We are now at Willem III whose daughter was married to a German as was his granddaughter and great granddaughter whom sits on the throne.
Well, as a spaniard I can say that the lyrics for the national anthem were withdrawn not so much for being "too nationalistic", but actually sounding really lame (they actually sound better when said in English, I reckon). And anyway, they were never really official, just some sort of weird trial balloon for the press launched by the Olimpic Comitee that nobody had asked for. Yes, I do know no one really cares about this, but I just thought it was, you know, quite ineresting...
I remember singing the national anthem alongside thousands of Dutchmen prior to the world cup final against Spain... The last sentence was an awkward moment to say the least!
@MixedBag27 It is probably harder than changing the constitution. The devotion in the Dutch anthem stems from the time that the Netherlands was born, the war of independence against Spain. So our national anthem is very nationalistic. It's like a song from Americans of the 18th century who sing about their love for the king of England, but do not like his taxes... And we all know what happened after that.
You could add the Italian anthem to that list of disturbing lyrics - "Let us join in a cohort, We are ready to die, We are ready to die, Italy has called"!

bottom line (literally) humans rule.

I think the Spanish should have the kept the anthem with the throat slitting in it. Gives it a bit of character.
furryeye 2 months ago
@furryeye that was from the French anthem, not the Spanish

So Spain has no lyrics for their national anthem, while Belgium has 3 lyrics (French, Dutch and German)

National anthems are worthless, in the US were modifying the spangle banner
to sound like Rock and Roll with a mix of blues.
Oh Yeah.
